A 55-year-old man died in the custody of the Orange County Sheriff's Department on Wednesday, officials said.

Costa Mesa Police arrested Stephen Douglas Mott Tuesday on suspicion of burglary and petty theft, according to the sheriff's department's news release about the death.

Mott had several other theft charges on his record, too, according to the state superior court's website.

He pleaded guilty to theft with prior conviction in April 2008 and was sentenced to 16 months in state prison. Then in August of 2010 he pleaded guilty to second-degree burglary and theft with prior conviction. According to court records, Mott was currently serving out a three-year probation term, which was set to end in 2013. **

Mott was hospitalized for chronic medical issues, but the sheriff's department didn't give his exact cause of death.

Nothing suspicious has been reported, officials say, but per protocol, the district attorney's office is investing the in-custody death.

**An earlier version of the story didn't have as detailed of a description of Mott's record.
