Obama Administration Threatens to Prosecute Media For Marijuana Ads

Anybody know what the hell is going on with Barack Obama?

You know, the guy who admitted before becoming president that he was a college stoner and whose Justice Department initially acted like that it had better things to do than harass medical marijuana dispensaries?

Seems like now that Osama bin Laden is dead, Obama has suddenly decided that his biggest priority when it comes to safeguarding America's national security isn't getting our sagging economy back on track but rather curtailing California's blossoming medical marijuana industry. At least that's how it feels given that in the past week, the feds have started telling gun-store owners not to sell firearms to potheads and are now threatening California property owners with land forfeiture if they rent to dispensaries or pot cultivators.

The latest evidence? According to a report today in California Watch, the Obama administration is now threatening to prosecute newspapers and other media enterprises that run ads for medical marijuana.

The report quotes U.S. Attorney Susan Duffy saying that this new phase in America's drug war is going to kick off in Southern California soon. "I'm not just seeing print advertising," she said. "I'm actually hearing radio and seeing TV advertising. It's gone mainstream. Not only is it inappropriate--one has to wonder what kind of message we're sending to our children--it's against the law."

One has to imagine this news hasn't gone unnoticed over at 420 Magazine's headquarters (although at the time of this writing it hadn't shown up on their homepage) or Cannabis Planet TV. But assuming you're reading this story, you probably already know that OC Weekly, like all alternative weeklies in states like California where voters have passed medical marijuana initiatives, runs ads for cannabis dispensaries in both print and online, as well as in weekly newsletters and our companion website, Toke Of the Town.

Given that part of our editorial mission is writing about marijuana, both medical and otherwise, you can expect to see much more about this latest development right here, in Navel Gazing's pot-related blog, Cannabis Chronicles. Assuming the feds don't raid our offices and lock up yours truly, that is.

I dislike conservative America greatly for simple reasons like hearing some dumb broad on "America's Morning News" say that cops should have sprayed protesters with disinfectant instead of pepper spray at UC Davis. But even before the election I knew Obama would govern as a conservative while the idiots on the right call him a socialist. Specially in foreign policy, immigration, and the most phony of all, the 'war on drugs.'Obama's failure to liberate the cannabis plant is what the right wing should be crying foul about, but wait they are dumber than crap most of these fake christian conservatives dont even know that the holy anointed oil contains 9 pounds of 'kaneh-bosm' according to exodus. Thats 9 pounds of dried flowering tops in this oil that the ancients would drench themselves in to "receive revelations from the Lord."

"What we perceive as being "high" or "stoned" the ancients called "possessed by the Spirit of the Lord."

So of course Obama is the anti-Christ LOL

These 'fast & furious' gun-running Feds are not only guilty of perjury and murder but also of bankrolling ruthless criminals, international terrorists, right/left-wing paramilitaries and various death squads with their counter-productive, sado-moralist policy of Prohibition.

Colombia, Peru, Mexico or Afghanistan with their coca leaves, marijuana buds or poppy sap are not igniting temptation in the minds of our weak, innocent citizens. These countries are duly responding to the enormous demand that comes from within our own borders. Invading or destroying these countries, thus creating more hate, violence, instability, injustice and corruption, will not fix our problem. We need to collectively admit that we are sick. -- Prohibition is neither a sane nor a safe approach; left unabated, its puritanical flames will surely engulf every last one of us!

When we legally regulate something, (as opposed to when we foolishly attempt to prohibit something) we do NOT automatically condone it's use; the legal regulations concerning the sale and manufacture of alcohol and tobacco are there to protect us from the vast increase in criminality and mayhem that would otherwise surely exist if we were foolish enough to prohibit them.

When governments prohibit drugs they effectively and knowingly hand a monopoly on their sale to dangerous criminals and terrorists. Without a legal framework in which to operate, these black-market entities can always be expected to settle their disputes violently, while terrorizing many peaceful and innocent citizens in the process. Were the users of alcohol to blame for the St Valentines massacre in the US in 1929? Of course not! It is just as naive to assume that one can compel all the users of Marijuana or Cocaine to simply quit, as it is to assume that all the users of Alcohol should have stopped drinking after the introduction of alcohol prohibition in 1919.

It is amazing how many people suddenly became "chronicly ill" when pot was legalized.  What a joke.

The law is the law and, like prostitution which put Craigslist in hot water, the OC Weekly will now suffer greatly for advertising pot.

Illegal is illegal is illegal.

So I guess this Administration is picking and choosing what Federal Laws have jurisdiction vs State Laws and what laws its okay the States to be empowered over than the Feds.Personally I do not care one way or the other on this issue.. But I do find it amazing that we can not get this country back in order with its huge trade deficits, illegal immigration, the deregulation of wall street/banking system, the federal reserve, our failing educational system, 2 wars which are still not over.. and yet he has the gall to go to task on such a non issue as this? Priorities.. apparently he didn't get the memo. This is why nothing can be accomplished with politicians.

Hey Nick -- In all seriousness, the OCW needs an emergency plan should you get raided.  The Feds will likely redirect your domain name moments before a raid so you won't be able to use the OCW to communicate.  Rather than wait until after the fact, like Wikileaks did, the OCW can put up mirrors in multiple locations around the world.

Man, this isn't the USA I grew up in.

Dateline: November 2012.  "Many analysts felt the turning point for Obama was when he decided to go after California's voter approved medicinal marijuana industry. Progressive and liberal voters as well as young people deserted him in droves, electing instead to vote for Ron Paul or third party candidates.  This key error by the Obama administration is the single largest reason that Republican nominee ________ (fill in name) will take his place in the White House next January."

Jesus said to do unto others as we would have them to do unto us. None of us would want our child thrown in jail with the sexual predators over marijuana. None of us would want to see an older family member’s home confiscated and sold by the police for growing a couple of marijuana plants for their aches and pains. It’s time to stop putting our own family members in jail over marijuana.   If ordinary Americans could grow a little marijuana in their own back yards, it would be about as valuable as home-grown tomatoes. Let's put the criminals out of business and get them out of our neighborhoods. Let's let ordinary Americans grow a little marijuana in their own back yards.   Here's one way that IT IS REALLY WORKING: Arresting the criminals and collecting a fee from registered growers (and bringing in thousands of dollars to support the county budget); what a great plan! This is the way to build a better America! http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/...   The current proposal before Congress, bill HR 2306, will allow states to decide how they will regulate marijuana. You can email your Congressperson and Senators at http://www.usa.gov/Contact/Ele... to discuss HR 2306.And a big THANK YOU to the courageous, freedom loving legislators, governors, and countless others who are working so hard to bring this through! You’re doing a great patriotic service for all of America!

In the time it took me to read this and follow the links, it's probable that 3,799 grown men experienced an erection for more than four hours. Thank goodness they know who to call. I'm sure once a lobbying pharmaceutical company gets their grubby hands on a legal plot of land capable of producing some toxic, yet FDA passable, derivative of marijuana, we will start seeing more and more advertisements of "middle-aged happy guy 1" enjoying a wonderful, doctor prescribed "Chronibon" chew tablet. Side effects may include: Hunger, a euphoric healing feeling, a sense of heightened creativity, disinterest in stress, a sudden liking of improvisational guitar riffs, the Moon-Pie and glass-bottle-Coca-Cola combination, driving through the mountains, riding a bicycle, maintaining general sanity, occasional laughing fits, the need to ask for directions to your current location, and generally being a much more pleasant person to be around. When life gets you down, let Chronibon lift you up.

Our state forfeited its legitimacy ...

long, long ago. It now keeps us in check with various forms of coercion and the ever-looming threat of violence. Does anyone seriously respect the government? I think any conscionable person would be ashamed of it if anything.

It's time to stop wasting our time asking these dill-holes for their permission, and to begin conducting ourselves with some self-respect.

The idea that the state can pick and choose what parts of nature to criminalize is patently absurd. 'You have the wrong vegetation in your pocket and, accordingly, we will now blackball you and even ruin your life if necessary'. And even then, that's not enough for these crackpots.

What a joke. There are Marbrol men riding bulls, there is the silver bullet on all tv adds and you want to threaten medical marijuan. How dare the administration threaten to waste my tax dollars on this issue. Medical marijuna has been proven scientifically that it cures many diseases. Every time a doctor stands before congress and states that marijuna has medicinal values it is ignored by the ignorant people running congress and the administration. Pull the adds if youwant because I will teach my kids and my grandkids the truth. I am a disabled veteran and I am able to curtail 4 different medicines with this one natural plant which happens to be the most safest non-toxic plant (in its natural form) that is grown in my back yard. The administration is full of crap, Obama is a hippocrite a liar and I have lost all respect for our commander and chief. You are a discrace Obama and you will be listed as the worst president of all time right under Nixon.Obama I hope you enjoy your tube steak tonight!

Three years it would have been unimaginable for me to vote for anyone but Obama in 2012. Now it's come to pass. His and Eric Holder's promises both before and after the 2008 election have not just been broken, but shattered. Also, "What kind of message are we sending to our children?" Um...not to make their grandparents' mistakes when it comes to prohibition? Or that really sick people can use pot to make themselves better? I am disabled by chronic illness and marijuana allows me to experience a partly normal life again, like being able to eat and to go see a movie with my husband. I'm quite the danger to youth, srsly.

Support H.R. 2306 and Repeal Federal Marijuana Prohibition.  Take away the federal government's power when it comes to anything marijuana.  Leave the decisions up to the states!

This two part plan is the only action the citizens of the US need to take to end federal marijuana prohibition:1) EVERYONE that sees these links sign up at both sites and weigh in on the debate- http://pvox.co/CdiFqY- http://wh.gov/gDQ2) Propagate those two links and ensure that everyone that sees them go to both those sites.

Too many people are blaming the President for enforcing the federal marijuana prohibition. Contact Congress (the LEGISLATIVE branch [that's the important one when it comes to law]) via the first link. Contact Obama (the EXECUTIVE branch [until Obama vetos a passed H.R. 2306 it's on Congress - but tell Obama anyway]) via the second link. It really is THAT easy. Participate in democracy!

I recently renewed my medical marijuana license.  I suffer from a chronic immunological disease.  There were two other patients n the doctor's office.  One could barely walk, and had his 20-something daughter along with him to help him out.  The other was emaciated and I suspect had a very serious chronic disease.

These are the people that you, and Obama, want to punish for daring to use a helpful natural herb instead of an expensive pharmaceutical chemical.

Shame on you.

Well, that sounds like a lot of fun. I'll leave the computer wizardry to people who know what you're talking about. My personal emergency plan if we get raided is to not be in the office when it happens, but otherwise to say nothing, and assuming I can't write anything down, take careful mental notes for my next cover story.
