Agribusiness reaps record wealth. Starving protesters cry for affordable food. Farmers and farm workers find themselves caught in the middle.

But, as the documentary Greening the Revolution shows, farmers and workers are organized, fighting back and implementing their own sustainable alternatives. The film is being shown locally tonight in that land of plenty known as Newport Coast.

Presented by the Newport Beach Film Festival and The Studio at Sage Hill, the free 7 p.m. screening of  Greening the Revolution will be immediately followed by a Q&A with first-time filmmaker Katie Curran.

The self-taught director took her camera and sound gear to Cuba, Mexico, Haiti, Brazil, Kenya, Zambia, India and parts of the United States for interviews with farmers, workers, activists, government officials and corporate mouthpieces. Among those who show up on screen are the director of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the vice president of Government Relations with Monsanto and such intellectuals as Vandana Shiva, Noam Chomsky and the late Howard Zinn.

Greening the Revolution kicks off the 2011 fall Cinema Sage Hill series of free screenings at the private (and righteous) school, 20402 Newport Coast Drive. Sage Hill and the film festival have been collaborating since the fall of 2009 to expose the community to compelling indie films.

For more information on the series, visit www.NewportBeachFilmFest.com or www.sagehillschool.org or, heck, just show up tonight ready to feed your head.
