OC Atheists Unveil Another Provocative Billboard

looking-up-150.jpg
This afternoon, under a billboard facing Chapman Avenue in Orange, local atheists unveil the third phase of their "outreach program for letting other non-believers know they have a voice in Orange County."

The grass-roots group Backyard Skeptics will unveil their latest billboard, which has text reading, "Make This A Better World--Reject All Religious Superstitions."

Backyard Skeptics organizing director Bruce Gleason is scheduled to lead a press conference about the 48- x 14-foot billboard about a mile east of the 55 freeway, on the left side of Chapman. He boasts a membership of 500 makes his is the largest group of organized atheists in the county.

"Atheists and humanists believe the world would be a better place without religious superstitions," reads a statement from the group about today's unveiling. "Although people of faith ignore religious superstitions outside of their faith, they see their own superstitions as fact and real. This billboard's message is that many superstitions are confirmed false by a believer when the superstitions in question are outside of their faith, but the believer will confirm the superstitions as true and real when they are tenants of their own religion.

"Magic underwear? Ridiculous. Talking snakes? Yes that actually happened! Many times a belief in religious superstitions results in the suffering of others because of the behavior believers exhibit," the statement continues. "This negative behavior stems from their faith and is hidden by the tenants of their religion. Although there are many attributes of religion which are positive, it pales in comparison with the actions religionists take which does not contribute to the well-being of others. The hindering of stem cell research, abstinence programs, the denial that condoms prevents STDs and gay marriage are several examples of how belief based on religious superstitions harms others."

Backyard Skeptics's second billboard, unveiled Sept. 21 alongside the 22 freeway at Valley View in Garden Grove, carried the message, "Faith Has No Answers--It Only Impedes Questions." It featured an image of a man reading the Bible though prison bars. The group's first billboard went up a month earlier next to the 55 freeway off Edinger Avenue in Santa Ana. It featured the slogan, "Atheism is Philanthropy Without Mythology, Peace Without Superstition."

The group raised the ire of believers across the nation for tearing pages out of Bibles near Huntington Beach Pier on Sept. 17. They did so to mimic the "Thomas Jefferson Bible," which removed biblical laws already deemed immoral by colonial times.

If atheists reach out and make it clear that there are many non-believers, the countless more that are faking belief for political, social, or financial reasons may feel it is safe to emerge from under the black yoke of religion into the clear light of truth and rational thinking.

Religion is based on faith; not facts. There would not likely be the backlash against religiosity, if over the last few decades; conservative Christians had decided to live their beliefs of goodness, mercy, & compassion instead of using their beliefs & verses from the Bible as hand grenades to be lobbed at anyone who disagreed with them. Besides, religion did for bull****, what Stonehenge did for rocks.

Nice!  For too long atheists were not allowed to speak up.  Well that's over, friends, get used to it!

We're going to harsh on Allah and Yahweh and Vishnu and Odin alike.  Until someone can actually demonstrate these beings exist, do not take person offense if we ridicule your superstitions, we hope you'd do the same for us ;)

I recognized all the superstitious beliefs listed except for one:  "a Cracker"?  Is that the wafer thing at Catholic mass or something else?

Religion is a disease that can be cured with education, but sometimes religious communities hold their followers down and make them believe stupid things. Whether its Flying Donkeys in the Koran or Virgin Births in the Bible, you need to remove your intelligence with faith and make yourself an idiot to believe it.

You know I always thought the magic underwear thing was joke.  I can't tell you how disappointed I was when removing the Wonder Bra from my GF.

Also did anyone notice the sign mentions "Halal" But not "Kosher"... I think the atheists are Pro-Israel.

Hey ergo-genius, what they're doing rises to the same obnoxious level of proselytizing.  Not a believer?  Great, but don't try and shove it down my throat.  Respect other's beliefs as well as their non-beliefs.

"Since the heavens and the earth declare the glory of God..."

Considering the "heavens" are over 99% uninhabitable, and how hostile the Earth is (diseases, natural disasters, etc.) I'm going to guess that we define the word glory differently.  I'd also imagine we'd define the word "moral" differently as well, considering Christians worship a God that has killed (Noah's flood, 10th plague of Egypt, etc.) and has ordered the killing of (Dueteronomy chapter 3, Numbers chapter 31, etc.) hundrends of thousands (if not millions) of innocent children and infants.

I didn't know the Koran had a flying donkey.  I need to read it one day.

Of course, not to be outdone, Christianity has a talking donkey. Num 22.

Dude, there are flying Donkey's in the Koran?  I mean, I bought a copy while I was in the middle east but never thought to read it (Kind of funny now that I think about it, I own a Koran but not a Bible) I Digress... I need to read about this!

Hey insulting jesus boy, if ur going to make a wise crack that was actually an old joke. Maybe u should include the actual verse & quote in the bible where jesus says it. But I bet u didnt know that did ya? FYI their are several Atheist & Humanist charities & they feed the poor & homeless. Know why were better. While that person is starving, we dont make them sit through a sermon in order to get food, of which is disrespectful to those homeless that may not be their religion. BOOOM!

"IF they really want to make an impact why dont they help the poor..put that money to better use."

Like building a 62-foot-high statue of Jesus? (Around 300K) Or rebuilding it after said statue was stuck by lighting, (i.e. an act of god) with a 50-foot high replacement? (Another 250K)

http://news.cincinnati.com/art...

Half a million could have helped a lot of people but instead the money was put 'to better use'.

"Lord Help us please as we are living in the last days." That's been the line for nearly 2000 years. "Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour." - 1 John 2:18 Even the disciples thought that Jesus' 2nd coming would be during their lifetimes.  This time period isn't special, stop fooling yourself - this isn't april :p

Word to the unwise. Religion shoves their shit down every single Americans throats. Case n point POLITICS. GAY MARRIAGE, IN GOD WE TRUST, ABORTION (OF which theists are trying to make a homicidal issue look up leg 26),  And Mormons just to name a few. Oh crap I forgot the biggest of them all FAUX NEWS shoving Religion down ur throats 24/7 infecting it into every little story they can, claiming that their "Fair & Balance" Buuut we know that isnt true. BTY u obviously dont follow american politics.

If your neighbor confides that a diamond the size of a refrigerator is buried in his yard, would you respect that belief -- without evidence of any kind, with no other evidence than his strident belief? This is precisely what religion asks of us. You don't have to respect anyone's beliefs. Although you might respect the evidence for those beliefs.

I like this sign better than the 100s of Christian BS signs which obliterate the landscape here in Florida. At least it has a real message rather than Biblical BS.

dont shove it down your throat? lol religion is shoved down non-believers throats every sunday....cant turn on the TV on sunday without seeing it.....every war has at least some cause due to religious differences....the middle east has been at war for over 3000 years, due to religious differences, and is likely to never end....

It's just another billboard. If you see it as "shoving something down your throat" then you don't have much respect for expression of opinion.

Yeah I always wondered even when I went to church, why I was sitting in a million dollar church, & all they could do was a bowl of soup or turkey. If the church really cared they'd build apartment complex's, but of course that would come at a price, most likely beyond just a sermon.

1) as evidenced by you're response above I can tell that you didn't fill your philosophy requirement with Logic.  and 2) I think that billboard is meant to purposely antagonize and provoke a confrontation with organized religion.

Are we really to believe, that the people who go out of their way to seek legal counsel and sue over a 100 year old cross on public land, meant to honor veterans of WWI, have it in the kindness of their hearts to post a billboard to promote peace and harmony among all?

Can you please elaborate as to what a "Shit Disturber" is?

Oh and a point of clarification... I generally protect he who is being bullied.  If the Christians put up a billboard directly admonishing a particular religion or the Atheists, then I would surely roll up my copy of the weekly and smack them on the nose with it. And please spare me with the stories of "here in BF middle of nowhere Florida I see them all the time"  Yeah and they also don't make the news... so save the Hearsay.  And I've been to Florida, hell, I lived in Jacksonville for a year, and no matter how hard you try. (and you people do try hard)  You're still the south...

Jeff is a troll like shit disturber and Jeff if you actually can read, don't try to make the point that I am a Troll. Troll is my last name and I like it.

Well if you're such a godless person why are you arguing against people who dislike religions? I thought for sure you were a fundy by the way you are protecting a 2000 year old myth.  But maybe you are just a shit disturber.

I didn't mean offense...but I still have a hard time believing the Mormon church is as egalitarian as you claim it to be. Perhaps I should change my tactic next time and tell them I don't like the church's disrespect of gays. It's a fact that some Mormons funneled money into Prop 8 banning gay marriage in California...do you defend that? I think being kind to one another includes allowing people the choice to marry whomever they choose, no?

lds
lds

I am a Mormon woman and I'm happy. My church teaches men to respect women, to be good fathers and put women on a pedestal. I am strong and sometimes opinionated. I am respected by my peers. I wouldn't trade what I believe for anything. Don't say things you obviously know nothing about. It would be a good world if people would just learn to be kind to one another no matter what they believe

FishWithoutBicycle

Jason IS correct...there are a lot of these shows on sunday mornings...

And most of the proverbial shoving down the throat is done by Christians, in my opinion. My house is visited a least a couple of times a week by folks who feel it's their right to try to convert me to Christianity. Most of them are polite...but we finally had to tell the Mormons we didn't like the way they treated women and now their visits are less frequent. If I want to find "the Lord", I will SEEK him/her/it. Faith is a voluntary endeavor.

Grow up, that's the nature of conflicting ideas.  Both religious and non religious people have conflicting ideas about what would build a better society.  If someone merely voicing their opinion is offensive to you then go sit at the kids table and color - the adults are talking.  That goes for atheists as well.

As far as that cross you referenced goes, you might want to look into it a bit more.  It wasn't on public land and its insane to imagine that a cross is the best symbol to represent a group of people as diverse as Americans...

westley
westley

"Are we really to believe, that the people who go out of their way to seek legal counsel and sue over a 100 year old cross on public land, meant to honor veterans of WWI"

Uh, no.  Anyone familiar with that cross case already knows that the "veteran memorial" ploy was only created decades after the cross was put up, and only after the first lawsuit to remove it was filed.

And anyone familiar with religions knows that a cross only honors Christian veterans.
