Victor Villaseñor, Legendary Chicano Author, to Speak at Fullerton Public Library Sept. 18

rainofgold.gif
Victor Villaseñor is no stranger to these parts, having made many appearances in Orange County over the past 20 years, since the publication of his 1991 classic, Rain of Gold. Everyone hails it for Villaseñor's wonderful telling of his parents' migration from Mexico to the United States, but I still feel it doesn't get enough credit for its portrayal of Orange County during the 1920s--not the Sunkist memories offered by our local "historians" but a truthful recalling of life in SanTana during the era.

If you want to hear about this book and all of Villaseñor's tales, you can check him out this Sunday at the Fullerton Library.

I have the honor of introducing Villaseñor, who's always a great public speaker, talking like the wacky uncle everyone has. It starts at 2 p.m., and more info here. See you there!

I have wanted to meet him since I first read Rain of Gold over 10 years ago. I will be out of town this week and hate that I have to miss this... feel like it's a once in a lifetime experience.

I am going to ask this question is all seriousness. If it is (or was) so bad here, if those evil white people were so mean to Mexicans, why stay? Why come in the first place?

Love this guy. had the opportunity to meet him when ruben martinez gave me his address so i could go ask him some questions for a report I had to do 0on his book when I was at SAC. He showed me a draft of his next book and I noticed a typo in it. The typo was a descriptioin of where his parents got married in santa Ana at the catholic church on 3rd & "Grant" street. Being the studious boy from orange I was I knew he meant the church by the Register Building on GranD. The most amazing thing about this meeting was I showed up unannounced with a nother classmate of mine and he gracioulsy invited us in to his homeafter asking wtf we wanted lol. I got to meet his mother the main character of the book rain of Gold. I still have the photo framed.
