Armored car guard Richard Chairez of Santa Ana has apparently found a unique way to relieve stress while on freeway runs.

Make that unique and disturbing.

The 25-year-old is accused of whipping open the passenger door while being driven on the Pasadena (210) Freeway through Glendora during the Monday morning rush and firing a round from his gun into an embankment.

No one was hit or injured, but when the armored car driver essentially asked what the hell was that, Chairez is alleged to have said he did it because he was stressed.

The driver had the good sense to discreetly inform a supervisor between stops, and when the armored van arrived at Westfield Santa Anita Shopping Mall, Arcadia police officers were waiting. Chairez was then disarmed and detained as Glendora police were contacted because the shooting actually happened there.

He was ultimately arrested on suspicion of negligent discharge of a firearm and held at Glendora jail in lieu of $35,000 bail. At last word, he was awaiting arraignment Wednesday at West Covina Superior Court.
