OC Groups Rally to Overturn Gay History Law

In the children's book King & King, a prince falls in love with a prince.
In July, Gov. Jerry Brown signed SB 48, also known as the FAIR Education Act, which requires that California public schools incorporate the contributions of gays and lesbians in their lessons.

Or, as Anaheim-based Traditional Values Coalition (TVC) describes it (and we're not joking): "The unthinkable and bizarre will be reality and it will be protected under the law!!"

The bill is being called "this year's Prop 8" as fired-up conservative groups and churches across the state join together in a last-ditch effort to stop the "homosexual indoctrination." They're rallying for a referendum, scrambling to get 504,760 registered voters to sign a petition by the Oct. 12 deadline so that the law can be put up for a public vote.

Leading the petition drive is Capitol Resource Institute (CRI), an organization originally founded as an anti-abortion lobbying group by wealthy OC businessmen Rob Hurtt and Howard Ahmanson Jr. The group and others have launched StopSB48.com, which includes downloadable info sheets to stuff into church bulletins.

SB 48, written by Sen. Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) and sponsored by Equality California and Gay-Straight Alliance Network, is intended to add the LGBT community to an existing list of underrepresented cultural and ethnic groups that must be covered in textbooks and other instructional materials in K-12 public schools. But opponents believe it "will teach children as young as five to not only accept but also endorse transgenderism, bisexuality and homosexuality," and argue that implementing the law would be costly and divert classroom time and resources away from subjects like science, math and writing.

The website shows a video of a tearful Massachusetts couple named Rob and Robin Wirthlin, whose son was forced to read King and King, a children's story about a gay prince.

Here's a nugget from TVC:

Korean churches in Southern California have also come out against against SB 48. New America Media reports that members of the National Council of Korean Churches and the U.S. offices of the Christian Council of Korea in Southern California discussed their plans to overturn the bill.

If the referendum succeeds, Equality California predicts a grim future for the law. However, the Associated Press points out that the Stop SB 48 campaign faces an uphill battle as well, as the Mormon and Catholic groups that spearheaded the Prop 8 have mostly stayed out of this issue.

At this point, it's hard to tell where the petition drive stands.

In the meantime, inspired by the anti-gay rally, our sister paper LA Weekly is highlighting important gays and lesbians in history, "the same people Stop SB 48 doesn't want California students to know about." Read and learn.

It's not even a issue of whether it's right or wrong. It's a choice issue! Gov Brown doesn't even care how parents of different beliefs feel about this. He's shoving this crap down our kids throats whether we like it or not! That sneaky governor of ours was able to make the least amount of noise while signing this garbage that even today a lot of Christians didn't even know about SB 48! They'll just find out when junior comes home and says "I kissed a boy today. It's ok, that's what we were taught!"

Jerry Brown is nothing but a LOSER ! Promoting this in our schools is SICK ! Wake up America ! I cannot believe our country has no morals.

I had the same question.  Turns out existing law mandated teaching the contributions of specific minority groups.  Leno expanded the law to include LGBT.  Slippery slope.  Next stop, famous contributions of bestiality practitioners.

Because our children are gay as well.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to send "those kids" to San Francisco?

Yeah, I have no morals because I believe gay people have rights. If being "moral" means being a bigot, then I choose to remain "immoral".

From sex between consenting adults to animal rape. Yeah, that's a completely logical transition. There's pro-bestiality movement hiding in the shadows, just waiting for gay representation to be accepted so they can rise from the sewers and march on capital hill for bestiality representation in history books.

The MFR (Men for rabbits), the CLC (Cow lovers coalition) and the UGD (United Goat doers) are just waiting for the right moment to say "gotcha!!!" And then we'll have nothing to say accept, "you're right. I guess it's only fair to promote animal rape."

Where the HELL do you come up with your chain of events? From LGBT to bestiality? WTF? Do you really think a homosexual wants to screw an animal so frequently and be open enough that the topic is going to be covered in the school books next year? You're an idiot. Perhaps you will be the one fighting to marry your secret mistress goat. Where do you stupid people come from? I suppose after bestiality will come pedifilia? 20ftJesus-is that next to teach? Ya freak.

It's the same stupid logic folks use to justify not granting gays the right to marry..these bigots are under the grossly misguided impression that homosexuality is inherently a "deviant" behavior and that showing any tolerance for gays would encourage more "deviance". I'd also like to know exactly how the hell acceptance of gays would encourage more pedophilia, considering most pedophiles prey on the opposite sex?

I'm pretty sure he was all about hate.

... and you need to learn to read between the lines.

The irony was sufficiently broad that I am sure that most readers got the tongue-in-cheek attitude. Or maybe you believe, similar to what -> SOME <- Muslims apparently believe, that the message isn't robust enough to withstand any question.

Puts me in mind of the PRC leaders who are so terrified of any critcism or questioning that they believe that any and all criticism, no matter how mild, has to be suppressed, for a parallel example.

Jesus was gay.  The most astounding finding from the newly discovered lead codices is that Jesus Christ was unambiguously and openly gay. He and his disciples formed a same-sex coterie, bound by feelings of love and mutual support. There are recorded instances of same-sex activity – the "beloved disciple" plays a significant role – and there is affirmation of the joys of friendship and of living and loving together.A whole new complexion is given to that rather puzzling passage where Jesus exhorts his followers to break family ties: "If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple." (Luke 14, 26). It seems clear now that this is less a negative repudiation of family and more a positive exhortation to join in affirmation of a gay lifestyle and love. There is at least one new parable, that of the two young men. There are clear echoes of the relationship between David and Jonathan, for Jesus speaks of one young man having his soul "knit with the soul" of the other, and loving him "as his own soul". Intriguing is evidence that the Catholics might be closer to the truth about the status of Mary, the mother of Jesus, than are the Protestants. She has a much bigger role in the life of Jesus than many hitherto expected, with Jesus frequently returning home and making much of her.Conversely, there is at least one incident when Jesus quarrels violently with Joseph, who shows great hostility and makes wild claims about "manliness". Before, one might have thought that, given Mary's virginity, Joseph's attitude was reflecting the ambiguities of his status in the family; but now it seems more probable that we have here a classic example of the Freudian triangle: over-possessive mother, hostile father, gay son.Why have we known so little about all of this before? A newly discovered Pauline epistle, appropriately to the Athenians, suggests a major Platonic influence, particularly of the Republic. The classically educated Paul, who was himself gay, saw that same-sex activity was inimical to the success of Christianity in the highly homophobic societies in which he lived. Hence, same-sex affections and activity were concealed, to be known to and practiced by only the leaders in secret – the guardians of Christianity as one might say. Obviously, this is a tradition that has flourished and lasted. It is not by chance that John Henry Newman is being made a saint.
