Deaf Immigrants Apply for Asylum, Claiming Persecution; Barbara Coe Hand-Signs Middle Finger to Them

Coe: Deaf to human decency

The Riverside Press-Enterprise had a fascinating story yesterday about an attempt by more than 60 deaf immigrants from various countries but mostly Mexico to get asylum, claiming persecution in their native countries for their disability. Many had horror stories to tell to migra agents at the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services asylum office in Anaheim, but getting molested and beat up for being deaf did nothing to warm the catatonic heart of California Coalition for Immigration Reform head witch Barbara Coe.

"MORE illegal alien LIARS!" Coe cawed to her minions in an email (as always, CAPS in the original). "They are NOT prosecuted in Mexico because they are deaf--they just want American taxpayers to fund their every need! We are sorry they are deaf. However, it is OUR responsibility to support deaf AMERICANS--not deaf ILLEGAL ALIEN liars and criminals AND the jillion children THEY chose to have! DEPORT, DEPORT, DEPORT--as OUR Immigration Laws mandate!"

What are you talking about?

Not only was George Washington born in what would become the US -- so was his father. Imagine that, even back then, a native born American son of a native born American. So much for the 'nation of immigrants', schtick. The only prominent Founding Father who could be considered an 'immigrant' was Hamilton, and even he was culturally, ethnically, and politically just like the other Founders, a WASP subject of the British Empire. The Constitution obviously excepted the Founding generation from the native-born requirement for President, but Washington, Adams, Jefferson etc all met that requirement except the the colonies were not politically independent.As for Emma Lazarus -- a recent biography of her says that even she-- the writer of a few lines of doggerel that somehow has been mistaken for actual US law-- was against immigration of shtetl Jews She suggested that another place, not America, should be found for that unappealing “mass of semi-Orientals, Kabbalists, and Hassidim.” (Esau's Tears, by Lindemann, pg 377)So even she was in favor of controlling immigration--I doubt she would have been happy about Triqui Indians from Southern Mexico or Nuer tribesmen from the Sudan or Salafist Muslims settling in America.

He was one of the dumbest generals ever and if it had not been for Mexicans george would have lost the war and hanged!

I said not a thing about Constitutionality. I referred to the Baggers and their knee-jerk reaction to anything they feel is un-American. You know, the kind of hysterics that allows them to hate government programs while using the money cashed from Social Security checks to pay to go to rallies.

As for your post, wow. That's a mess of work to try to discredit one comment. You need to get out more. Nor did I associate a poem as law. You did that. You probably should just read the comments as written instead of inserting a whole lot of things in there that were never written. Or just simply attribute them to the voices in your head.

I related this article to my "born and raised in Mexico" fiancee. He said, What?!! That is a bunch of bull---t. He said that maybe they were doing something else that caused them to be persecuted, but for being deaf, no.

How exactly does Ms. Coe think aliens become legal? If you apply for asylum and it is granted, you are now a legal alien.

Stupid really ought to be painful.

I don't claim to know what Coe is thinking, but let's get real here. Asylum is supposed to be claimed upon arrival, at an official port of entry. These folks seem to already be in the country, having gotten in somehow without going through proper procedures. These factors point to an after-the-fact effort to avoid deportation or 'adjust' status, not a serious claim for asylum.

This would seem to pose a dilemma for all you proud Mexicans -- either your country it is so cruel that it is common to pick on the sordos, in which case it might make sense to let them in but not hearing Mexicans, or the sordos are just using a convenient excuse to avoid deportation.

You'll still need the either the hearing or non-hearing ones to mow your lawn and clean your house.

Well, I don't have much of a lawn, but if I did I would mow it myself like my senior citizen dad does his. As for my flat, I scrub my own toilets and wash my own floors. Good exercise, good for the soul, and doesn't impose social costs on my country, state, or county.
