Atheists To Cut-and-Paste Bibles Saturday

torn-page-bible-150.jpg
Atheists will be tearing a page from the Bible Saturday near Huntington Beach Pier.

No, that does not mean they'll be borrowing a deed from the Good Book to apply to modern life.

They'll be tearing actual pages out of the Bible "to make a point."
Bruce Gleason of Backyard Skeptics explains that nearly all Christians agree with his fellow atheists that the immoral laws written in the Bible should not be used in today's society. So, Backyard Skeptics members will be tearing those verses out of the book.

thomas-jefferson-dollar.jpg
America's founding father and third president Thomas Jefferson did so, and his Jefferson Bible filled with cut and pasted verses came in at only 88 pages, Gleason notes.

"Many Christians feel the Bible is inerrant and has no contradictions or immoral passages," Backyard Skeptics note. "Most Christians have not read the Bible or can even recite the Ten Commandments.  A recent Pew poll indicated that atheists know more about the Bible than Christians do."

The stunt will be pulled by what's claimed to be the largest group of non-theists in Orange County at 2 p.m. Saturday at Huntington Pier.

It'll probably be mere steps from where a weekend preacher shouts biblical verses at passersby.

"My true religion, my simple faith is in love and compassion. There is no need for complicated philosophy, doctrine, or dogma. Our own heart, our own mind, is the temple. The doctrine iscompassion. Love for others and respect for their rights anddignity, no matter who or what they are - these are ultimately allwe need." Dalai Lama

Atheists are just bigoted haters with no life.

Let them have their little protest in peace, then they'll just go home and google religious sites and articles for the rest of the day and night, emailing articles they REALLY hate to fellow Atheists who will reply "YEAH, I HATE THAT TOO!". Then they'll get back to filing "In God We Trust" off their pennies LOL!

These guys are just jealous of that backwoods preacher who burnt the Koran. But offending X-ians is a parlor sport amongst our elite, whereas Muslims are a whiny 'protected class'. Sorry, non-theists, being pussies and attacking X-ians won't get you much traction --try taking on Mohammad's minions next time.

Attention whores tear pages of bible.   Oh boy.

I am glad they have this freedom but don't really see the need to do it.

While I think that the bible is a book of fairy tales, this just seems unnecessary.  I think the reasoning here may be that many religious groups hold demonstrations, go door to door, and find other ways to cram their ideas down your throats so the athiests can do it too.  It's certainly their right, but I'm of the belief that it just dumbs athiesm down or gives atheism the feel of a 'religion'.  Passing by, who can tell the difference between a religious nut and an anti-religious nut?  Be reasonable, keep your religion or non-religion to yourself, and try to make this world a better place.  Moving on.

Now that's the way to win friends and influence people.

The "Law's" given by Moses were to be obeyed by people who call themselves by God's name(God's people). God is holy and His children should be so too. The reason Christians might agree that these laws are not applicable to today's society, is they understand, God didn't say to enforce these laws on the world. Unfortunately the percentage of Christians who have not read, pondered, and understood the Bible, is much like the percent of American voters who have not read or pondered the Constitution, Declaration of Independence, or the foundations of the reasoning there, found in Foxes book of Martyrs, and the efforts of men like William Penn. As most Americans rely on "experts" in the media to tell them what the issues are, most "Christians" rely on their "religious leader" to read the Bible for them, and tell them what it says.  Most Atheists are surprised to find Darwin, called himself Agnostic, rejecting the Atheist label, he also said that the mental faculties of animals are equal to humans...

Not all atheists are like that. I'm acquaintances with one atheist who treats me with respect. In return, I respect him.

Unfortunately, an overwhelming majority of atheists are like the ones that you described. I understand that they have way too much time on their hands. But you'd think that they'd find something better to do with that time.

"Atheists are just bigoted haters with no life."

And Christians are so tolerant, right? Please.

But they are only doing what Thomas Jefferson, one of our founding fathers, did in the late 1700s — was he offending X-ians (by the way why would a Christian self reference as an X-ian?)?

Abrahamists (Jews, Christians and Muslims) have been chopping up (interpreting) the Bible (first 5 books of the Torah) since it was first compiled about 500 BCE from (also a cut and past job) disparate souses of local religions, myths and historical traditions. With this somewhat theatrical stunt our local Atheists/Agnostics (brave lads and ladies) are pointing out the absurdity of one of the most harmful and egregious notions in modern Abrahamic religouse ideas — that the 5 books of the Torah are inerrant. This is the idea that leads to such irrational acts as 9/11 — wouldn't everybody agree that preventing such fundamentalist thinking is a good thing?

Yes, perhaps we atheists should adopt more classical Christian methods: fire, brimstone, and execution.

Sir, your barely literate composition is shot through with errors. We have no evidence whatsoever that Moses ever existed, let alone that a large group of semitic people wandered for 40 years in the Sinai. None. No archeological evidence whatsoever. Have you read the Bible? Clearly the god of Israel commands his people to obey or suffer the consequences. Just ask Lot's wife. Darwin was most certainly an atheist, losing his faith with the untimely death of his daughter. He preferred T. H. Huxley's word "agnostic" so as not to offend his wife's Christian sensibilities. And please provide us with a reference to Darwin's assertion that, as you so crudely put it, "the mental faculties of animals are equal to humans." You cannot. Darwin rightly said that the brains of our species and others were similar and subject to the same evolutionary force: natural selection. If you're going to contribute to the public prints, you need to be more diligent with your sources.

So because Thomas Jefferson did it, it's okay?

It wasn't okay then, and it's not okay now.

Like the response of many an atheist is any better? An overwhelming majority of atheists that I've run into have been nothing but mean-spirited, spiteful, hate-filled, bigots with WAY too much time on their hands.

I wonder what Bruce Gleason and members of his hate-filled group, do to make the world a better place. What do they do to help people? It seems to me that instead of treating theists (especially Christians) like garbage, they could get off of their butts and help others. That would be a better way to spend their time. Don't you agree?

Hi Valentia,  You are right about Moses not wandering around Sinai, it was Constantine's psychic mother that claimed Mt Sinai,  was Horeb. Moses crossed the Red Sea into Saudi Arabia, not the sea of reeds to Sinai. Want proof? Google Jebel El Lawzs.  In a letter to J Fordyce, July 7, 1879, requoted in the Collector #1 1958, Charles Darwin writes: I have never been an atheist in the sense of denying the existence of a God. I think that generally ( & more & more so as I grow older) but not always, that an agnostic would be the most correct description of my state of mind. The whole subject (of God and morality) is beyond the scope of mans intellect.

In the Descent of man Charles writes: "There is no fundamental difference between man and the higher animals in there mental faculties."

Darwin is my source, how more diligent can You get?

It's "Christian," not "X-ian." Christians follow Jesus CHRIST; not Jesus "X-ist." Please show us SOME amount of respect.

How many atheists have you "run into"? Give us a working number. Otherwise, we'll put it in the bin labeled "anecdotal." And atheists are a "hate-filled group" because they choose not to believe in your imaginary friend? You'll need to do better than this, pal.

I dared him to smite me. Apparently, he declined.

Sir:Once again, we have no evidence that Moses existed or that the Jews were captives in Egypt. You'll have to find some before asserting anything about crossing a "sea of reeds." As for whether Darwin was an atheist or an agnostic, he was foremost a scientist. No scientist would insist on the impossibility of some all-powerful supernatural god. Rather, and rightly, science holds that such a probability approaches zero (cf., Bertrand Russell's "tea kettle" analogy; still valid). Darwin would agree. And I cannot see that Darwin would equate the brain of a sheep with that of Homo erectus. Fundamentally, I suppose, we are alike; except that our brains are considerably larger and thus a good deal more complex.
