Elephant on Ground Near Boxcar Brings Rashomon Explanations from Ringling Bros. and PETA

elephant-collapse-anaheim_150.jpg
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) claims that a Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus elephant collapsed while being loaded into a rail boxcar in Anaheim following Sunday night's finale at the Honda Center.

Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait has been sent a letter from PETA "urging him to make this most recent visit of Ringling's the last in the city because of the never-ending stream of animal abuse," according to the animal-rights organization that has mounted unending opposition to the use of elephants in the Greatest Show on Earth.

In a separate letter to Ontario's Mayor Paul Leon, PETA calls for an immediate inspection of Ringling's animals by an independent veterinary expert to "ensure that Ringling does not force this or any other ailing animal to perform." A circus engagement is scheduled to begin Wednesday at Citizens Business Bank Arena there.

Sarah the elephant appears to have fallen and can't get up. Ringling Bros. and PETA dispute how she landed there.
Ringling Bros. tells the Weekly the elephant in the photo at left is Sarah, who lost her balance while entering the boxcar in Anaheim. The circus, which is under the Feld Entertainment umbrella, claims in the following statement that the "false" and "grossly out of context" allegations originated from Animal Defenders International (ADI), which previously released footage of elephants it claims were abused at a Ringling Bros. ranch in Florida:

"Sarah, the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey elephant on the Red Unit, is healthy. The most recent allegations by Animal Defenders International (ADI) are not only false but grossly out of context. The facts are, following the final show in Anaheim, Calif., Sarah escorted by her handlers up the loading ramp into the elephant train car when she shifted her position, backing down the ramp, causing her to lose her balance, where she kneeled and roll down the ramp onto the ground. It took approximately ten minutes for her handlers to allow Sarah to reposition herself and stand on her own, which she did."

The Ringling Bros. statement continues, "Sarah was immediately examined by a Ringling Bros. veterinary technician as well as Orange County animal control officers who were present during the incident. They found that she received minor abrasions but was otherwise in good condition. Following her examination Sarah was accompanied up the ramp and entered the train car without incident.  She has also been examined by a Ringling Bros. veterinarian, and a follow up visit in Ontario by animal control officers found her to be good health. It is appalling that ADI would manipulate an incident and the public to further their agenda."

But PETA director Delcianna Winders says in email to the Weekly that her organization, which works closely with ADI, began calling for Sarah's removal from performances last month "because of her poor physical condition."

In a statement of her own, Winders writes:

"If the fallen elephant was indeed Sarah, then this is the latest incident of a sick animal in desperate need of treatment being forced to travel and perform strenuous tricks under threat of the metal-spiked bullhook--one more example of Ringling's complete disregard for the health and well-being of the animals it uses. The city has the authority to make sure that Ringling never again brings its abusive show to Anaheim and should act on it."

Her group claims that two independent veterinarians who observed video footage of Ringling's elephant walk and opening-night performance in Los Angeles two weeks ago reported back that: "[O]ne of the elephants is lame to the point of being crippled and should not be performing; that an elephant showed evidence of arthritis, one of the leading reasons elephants are euthanized; that an elephant exhibited pelvic lameness; and that an elephant showed shoulder lameness."

The PETA email continues, "An elephant biologist who observed these same elephants in May reported similar symptoms, indicating that the ill and ailing elephants are continually forced to perform despite their poor health and without sufficient veterinary treatment."

Kenneth Feld is the billionaire and owner responsible for paying attorneys to continue violating the Animal Welfare Act and the USDA is suppose to enforce the law protecting the health and transportation of all circus animals. Sarah the elephant who collapsed in Anaheim California in August was only seen by a vet tech. This is not an accredited vet and Kenneth Feld is violating the law again by forcing lame and very ill animals to perform horrific, cruel unnatural endless acts. Kenneth Feld needs to be fined and jailed for his constant corruption and evading the laws to [protect animals for his own GREED. Feld was fined $270,000, November 28, 2011 for not having proper vet accredition and violating transportation of animals AGAIN! FELD and RINGLING are in constant denial and hiding behind high $$$ paid attorneys again at the horrible expense of these poor, very sick animals who hate their lives and are tortured into submission with BULLHOOKS, ELECTRIC SHOCK and CHAINS. Feld allows employees who are uneducated, cheap and have horrific criminal records, with violent pasts  to work for Ringling Circus. There is a reason the poor, abused, ailing sick animals are hidden by fences, shielded from public eye in back of all the stadiums; Mean, violent criminal untrained workers with BULLHOOKS and torture to the animals. Feld will continue to hide behind his attorneys, hide his face as long as people say nothing and he will do this all for MONEY!SHAME ON FELD.

Anyone who supports PETA is no true lover of animals. Period. PETA targets "shallow" animal lovers, the ones that like to think they love animals and tell everyone that they do, simply to make themselves look good. Do your research. When you're finished, try supporting a real animal-rights organization.

I am sorry to say that Ringling Bros Circus abuses animals. For photo, video, and testimonial proof from a former trainer, go to http://www.ringlingbeatsanimals.com/

PETA is an agenda driven, bullshit cause. They skew everything to show only the side they want everyone to see and not the whole truth. Animal control would have stepped in if they saw any signs of abuse. All the peta nut jobs out there can go shove carrots up there assess for all I care. Now pardon me, my thick juicy steak is almost done. Mmmmmmmm. Meat is tasty!

Shouldn't this article contain the list of animals Ringling has killed over the years? Clyde the lion who died of heat stroke in their train. Benjamin the drowned baby elephant. Lima the zebra, euthanized for escaping. 8-month-old Riccardo, an elephant who fractured his legs trying to do a trick.

Also, people should know that their "CONSERVATION" efforts are a joke. Ringling has NEVER RELEASED AN ELEPHANT INTO THE WILD. They are "conserving" elephants in order to have a steady supply for their shows.

I have ridden a healthy and well-cared for elephant through the jungle walking down hills at a 45 degree incline, through 3 feet of mud, and not once did the animal lose balance. To have it lose balance by walking up the ramp to a boxcar would imply, to me, that this animal is not healthy and not being properly looked after.

Common Sense!

Lets look at some real facts here since its clear many people posting don't understand them.Yes we all know animals were deliberately mistreated in the past. However, if you think they still are, you are sorely mistaken. Not saying it never happens anymore, bit fact is it is not financialy sound for any place to let it continuly happen. It is well known that mistreated animals get sick more often, and are more likely to die at younger ages. And these days, treating sick animals is costly, and even more so to replace them! That being the case, why would any organization deliberately, and continuly mistreat their animals when they know it could mean more money coming from their bottom line, especially when a healthy, happy animal performs better and lives longer? If they are so money hungry, and only care about the bottom line, than they clearly do care about their animals even more so! All you PETA people answer that one?

HighWing

Not saying I completely trust Ringling Brothers PR, but I trust PETA'S even less. And it is already quite clear many peta members are already posting on here, which makes me question PETA even more. I've got nothing against ethical treatment of animals, but there is a fine line between that and reasonable treatment. And once PETA recognizes that and isn't out to further their agenda to stop all animal use for any reason, I would be more likely trust them.

This literally makes me sick to my stomach. The only reason these people continue to do this is because they are still getting paid by those who support it. Its discusting!

Up until now I was a circus fan. However; if they are currently using the bullhook, count me out forever. I am no elephant expert, but as far as I know elephants don't just fall down.

Where you have people handling animals, you'll have people who don't handle animals well. Corruption is inevitable no matter what rules are in place. Some people can jab an elephant with a metal prod too hard and many times over to make him stand on his head. Some people can ignore a moribund research animal in need of care because they'll euthanize him eventually anyways. Some people can eat meat while ignoring the fact that so much meat is consumed each day that not every chicken has his throat slit properly and goes through boiling water alive because workers haven't the time to take extra care with each individual whose life is being taken. Some people can be those workers in the slaughterhouses.  I wish these situations didn't exist where there's room for error and abuse through lack of sympathy.  I don't eat meat cause I know it's always being done wrong somewhere and I don't go to RB because I know some trainers are just "going to work" when they handle these beautiful elephants. It's amazing how people know these things happen but can overlook it for taste and entertainment. From the book, Eating Animals: would it be thought of as acceptable if you sloppily slaughtered an animal because you liked the way it screamed?  It's humanity and it's missing :(

Any circus featuring animal performances, as most do, is undeniably cruel treatment of animals. Forcing animals to behave in a manner which is against their nature is wrong in more ways than I have words to express. I stopped going to the circus years ago because I hate clowns, but the animal cruelty exhibited in the performances turns my stomach. I cannot imagine what must happen during their training. The simplest way to stop this from happening, is to spread the word and encourage everyone you know to not patronize any such event which uses animals in these unnatural manners. Without your money to support them, they will have no other choice than to close down. We have multiple preservations for former circus animals to gain some dignity back. Use the money you would spend on circus tickets and ware, and donate to these foundations.

I live near Hutto, TX. Their team animal and theme is a Hippo. In 1890, Ringling Bros circus came to TX and the hippo escaped to Hutto (it's a lot like the Serengeti here). And hid in the river. It took two days to drag her out of there.

You're so full of it.  Just youtube ringling brothers elephant abuse.  This is stuff that happens when they're in a semi public setting.  And there are more videos, including a guy who was an elephant trainer, who quit the job after realizing they were abusing the elephants including baby elephants that they start "training" at a very young age.  How do you explain them getting the animals to do tricks?  How do you explain shock devices and clubs being used to threaten.  Think that club wss never used before?

I have worked with ringling and seen their animals up close and in person at both their circuses and the center for elephant conservation. Those animals are treated with love, kindness, respect, gentility, and are given better health care than most people. They never abuse and always love the animals they work with 24 hours a day.

There's a big difference between what goes on at a Busch Gardens, a zoo, or Disney.  Zoos etc are not great places for animals but the animals aren't banged in the knees, shocked, trained in chains, and abused mentally with threats of punishment like they are in circuses.  If you think for a moment a tiger enjoys or finds it natural to risk injury jumping through fire hoops onto a small platform you're a loser.  Put the computer down and go back to the crack pipe.

ITS ABOUT SARAH AND HER CAPTORS WHO KEEP FORCING HER T PERFORM SICK JUST LIKE THEY DID WITH BABY BENJAMIN.  There were WITNESSES THERE!!! They were not peta.  Most of us here are not peta. I am not a peta member but Ive been researching circus animal abuse for 10 years, SO DONT CALL ME PETA.  i AM AN KNOWLEDGEABLE RESEARCHER, WRITER, JOURNALIST  Oh well it looks like RB sent their fans here to post.  LOST CAUSE

<sigh>  People don't have to be members of PETA in order to advocate for animals    Like I said earlier, either you have no opinion at all, or people think you're an extreme activist - nothing in the middle.  Whatevs.....</sigh>

No this elephant most likely fell down because animal activists were screaming obscenities into her ear with loud bullhorns frightening her and making her nervous. The activists are creating a dangerous situation on purpose to make it difficult for the trainers/handlers while the animals are under their supervision. This is clearly harassment.

Animal abusers go on to abuse humans. STart with the voiceless if you want to change the world. If you don't respect an animal what makes you think that a human will respect another human? Or right, you are missing a few brain cells. I'll bet you beat your dogs AND your women.

Actually, some zoos still use circus-style training involving dominance and bullhooks on elephants, so your statement is not quite factual.

Actually they're a little less than that.  About $100k.  But if you get a nice bright smiling cute little baby elephant with big dumbo ears and strong legs then they'll pay more.

If you want people to change, educate, not insult. If you call people inbred idiots you wont get anywhere. Peta is so extremist that people don't take them seriously. I understand and agree that animals need compassion but fellow humans come first.
