UPDATE, AUG. 18, 11:29 A.M.: Whether a 23-year-old parolee shot dead by Anaheim Police Tuesday afternoon was armed and, if so, returned fire remain unknown.

But at least we now know who he was.

The department identified him as David Raya, who pleaded guilty in 2006 to felony assault with a firearm. He was then sentenced to four years in state prison.

Police say patrol and undercover officers went looking for Raya, who was considered armed and dangerous, in the 100 block of W. Guinida Lane. What led cops to that location remains a mystery.

A resident of that neighborhood tells the Orange County Register she heard four shots, a pause and then three more shots Tuesday. She went outside to discover multiple officers on top of a man.

Raya died at a local hospital treating him for at least one gunshot wound.
