A 70-year-old man found dead in his car yesterday evening at 2342 Vista Road in La Habra Heights has been identified as Donald Steves Jr.

According to Assistant Chief Ed Winter of the Los Angeles Department of Coroner, Steves, who friends knew as Tom, suffered a gunshot wound and the incident is being investigated as a suicide.

A call placed to Don Steves' Chevrolet in La Habra confirmed the man was owner of the La Habra based dealership which has been a city institution for decades and features signs with cartoon images of Steves in his trademark cowboy hat and bushy beard.

This is fallout from a government that forced the bond holders to take a mere 5 percent on the dollar, gave 30 percent of the general motors to the unions and then closed the franchises of the people that didn't agree with their socialist agenda. Afterwards when people started to fight back, they were threatened with retaliation from the obama adminstration. This was right in the begining, when some people still believed in this idiot. Now we know better, having seen his tactics with health care and regulation instead of legislation.

I live about a 1/4 mile south of where Don left this world.  I drove by the spot and was really touched at what I saw.  Someone with woodwork talent made a really nice wooden cross with a message engraved on it.  I'm not sure of the exact words, but it was something like "RIP my old friend"  There's also a mini park bench to relax on, as well as many flowers.  It's obvious by the amount of care that went into this memorial that Don was beloved by many, many people.  My most sincere condolences to the Steves family and friends.  I saw there were many people coming and going at the Steves residence.  I'm glad the family is getting all this support.  I can't imagine their pain.  RIP Don, may you drive that great Corvette C5 Z06 in the sky.

I blame a lot of this on the fact that GM would not renew their Chevrolet dealership contract with him.  After many decades of being a Chevrolet dealership, this is how GM rewards its loyal sales force.  That was a devastating loss for Don and his family.  Damn evil corporations don't care how it affects their employee's when they're essentially laid off.  GM's got blood on their hands.  RIP Don Steves, I'm truly sorry that you saw no other way out.  You leave behind many heartbroken family members and friends.  I can only hope you find peace where ever your are now.

Officer Kenneth Hampton and Jay Ciccinelle of the Fullerton PD should take a page out of Don's book and save the city some money.

DO Hamton, DO IT.

So very sad.  The dealership is an institution in La Habra.  I am so sorry that the loss of the Chevrolet name has lead to this....

It's always a sad commentary when anyone reduces the outcome of events to direct a single and irreversable solution - and one that inevitably will bring to bear the pain of loss to those related through blood or friendship. And to the community he served, the loss cannot be calcualted -  no more than one could calculate how the falling of one domino would effect the outcome of others.

I've bought two cars  back in the day from Steve's. a new  72 Monte Carlo and a used 69 impala.  Both great cars and great service. From Steve's.  Moved to AZ and continued to purchase GM products.

I agree.  I've bought a truck from him and a corvette right off the showroom floor and got great deals on both.  My brother-in-law also worked there for a few years as a salesman.  I am from La Habra Heights.  My dad bought a van there.  And all of the sudden poof, no franchise renewal?  I couldn't believe it.  When all of the other dealers were heading towards the freeway "auto malls" Don stayed put.  The property was paid for and everyone knew them.  What a shame.  Sorry for everyone.  He was a really nice guy.
