UPDATE, JULY 25, 7:56 A.M.: The Orange County District Attorney's office (OCDA) is seeking other possible victims of suspected serial rapist Travis Dewayne Batten, Jr. of Irvine.

The 29-year-old is facing felony counts that could put him behind bars from 157 to 204 years with a conviction.

The OCDA lays out its case against the Fletcher Jones Motor Cars mechanic and explains how to contact investigators seeking other potential victims after the jump . . .

OCDA SEEKS PUBLIC'S HELP IN IDENTIFYING POTENTIAL ADDITIONAL VICTIMS OF MAN CHARGED WITH THREE SEXUAL ASSAULTS OF WOMEN IN IRVINE AND NEWPORT BEACH

NEWPORT BEACH - The Orange County District Attorney is seeking the public's help in identifying potential additional victims of a man who was charged today with the sexual assaults of three women in the cities of Irvine and Newport Beach. Travis Dewayne Batten, Jr., 29, Irvine, was arraigned this afternoon on three felony counts of forcible rape, two felony counts of assault with intent to commit sexual offense during commission of first degree burglary, two felony counts of forcible oral copulation, and one felony count each of assault with intent to commit sexual offense, sodomy by force, sexual penetration by foreign object by force, dissuading a witness by force or threat, kidnapping to commit rape, and first degree residential burglary. He is also charged with sentencing enhancement allegations for committing sexual offenses during the commission of a burglary, tying up or binding a person, and sexual assault of multiple victims. If convicted, Batten faces a sentence ranging from 157 years to life up to 204 years to life in state prison. He is being held without bail and is scheduled for a pre-trial hearing, August 1, 2011, at 8:30 a.m. in Department H-1, Harbor Justice Center, Newport Beach.

Between May 2005 and July 2010, Batten is accused breaking into the residences of three women he did not know while wearing a mask. He is accused of raping two Irvine women and sexually assaulting a third living in Newport Beach. Both Irvine attacks occurred at residences in the same apartment complex, Amherst Apartments. Prior to both Irvine attacks, residents contacted police reporting a suspicious man and/or vehicle in and around the area.

At approximately 9:00 p.m. on May 20, 2005, Batten, then-23, is accused of wearing a mask and breaking into the Newport Beach residence of 40-year-old Jane Doe #1 while she was out. When the victim arrived home, the defendant is accused of attacking her and throwing Jane Doe #1 to the ground. Batten is accused of forcing the victim to her bedroom, duct taping her hands and over her mouth, and sexually assaulting the victim. He is accused of sexually assaulting Jane Doe #1's breasts and vagina. Batten is then accused of punching the victim twice in the head and threatening the victim by stating he would come back and get her if she contacted police. He is accused of fleeing the scene. Jane Doe #1 called 911.

Newport Beach Police Department officers responded to the scene and investigated the case. Batten is accused of leaving DNA at the scene, which was collected by police, processed by Orange County Crime Lab (OCCL), and entered in the local and State DNA databases.

At approximately 11:30 p.m. on Nov. 30, 2006, Batten is accused of wearing a dark mask and breaking into the Irvine apartment of 21-year-old Jane Doe #2. While the victim was showering, the defendant is accused of waiting outside of the victim's bathroom. He is accused of raping Jane Doe #2 as he exited her bathroom throwing her to the ground and tying her hands. Batten is accused of sodomizing the victim and raping her a second time. Before fleeing the scene, the defendant ordered the victim to get into the shower and not to contact police. Jane Doe #2 called 911.

Irvine Police Department (IPD) officers investigated the case. Batten is accused of leaving DNA at the scene, which was processed by OCCL and entered into the local and State DNA databases. The DNA was matched to the DNA collected in the 2005 sexual assault.

At approximately 12:00 a.m. on July 8, 2010, the defendant is accused of breaking into the Irvine apartment of 24-year-old Jane Doe #3 while wearing a mask. Batten is accused of gaining access into the home while the victim was showering. He is accused of attacking Jane Doe #3, throwing her to the ground and binding her hands. Batten is accused of raping Jane Doe #3 and forcing the victim to engage in mutual oral copulation. He is accused of ordering the victim to get in the shower and not to call police before fleeing the scene. Jane Doe #3 called 911.

IPD investigated this case. The defendant is accused of leaving DNA at the scene, which was collected by police and processed by OCCL. Based on the DNA, it was determined that the three sexual assaults had been perpetrated by the same person. IPD continued to receive complaints of a suspicious man in the same Irvine neighborhood where the two prior attacks occurred. Batten was linked to the crimes as a result of further investigation and arrested July 21, 2011, while driving to Fletcher Jones Motorcars dealership in Newport Beach, where he works as a mechanic.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with additional information or who believes they have been a victim is encouraged to contact Supervising District Attorney Investigator Lou Gutierrez at (714) 347-8794 or Irvine Police Department detectives at (949) 724-7194.

Deputy District Attorney Jennifer Walker of the Sexual Assault Unit is prosecuting this case.

UPDATE, JULY 21, 1:55 P.M.: The Irvine Police Department released the booking photo at right of a suspected serial rapist blamed for sexual assaults in Irvine and Newport Beach from May 2005 through July 2010.

Cops also corrected the spelling of the suspect's name: Travis Dewayne Batten, Jr.

ORIGINAL POST, JULY 21, 11:20 A.M.: All Irvine Police detectives had to go on investigating a sexual assault in November 2006 was DNA evidence collected at the scene. It wound up matching DNA collected at a Newport Beach rape scene 18 months earlier.

Working the cases later produced a latent fingerprint from the May 2005 rape in Newps. But the forensics evidence was of little use without a match to prints or DNA samples of someone in the crime database.

That all changed yesterday.

Wednesday afternoon, Irvine and Newport Beach police investigators working together arrested 29-year-old Travis Dewayne Batton Batten, Jr. of Irvine. He was later booked into the Orange County Jail for multiple counts of rape and other felonies for sexual assaults dating back to May 2005. He is being held without bail.

The trail that led to the arrest re-opened on July 7, 2010, when a sexual assault was reported in the same residential complex as the November 2006 case. Again, DNA was recovered and it ultimately matched that collected at the 2005 and 2006 rape scenes. And, again, the new case started to chill because of no database matches and the assault victim being unable to describe her attacker's face or physique.

But the location similarities prompted  Irvine detectives to conduct uniformed and undercover patrols of the area. Last month, Irvine police received a report of suspicious person prowling in the same area as the assaults. Detectives stepped up surveillance of the area, and some leads helped the department narrow in on an unknown number of suspects.

An Irvine police statement released this morning does not describe exactly how it was done, but detectives were able to obtain fingerprints from these people of interest. Police say Batten's "positively matched" the print recovered in Newport Beach six years ago.

Batten's booking photo is expected to be released later today, according to Irvine Police Lt. Julia Engen, who added detectives are trying to determine if there are other victims out there. If you know anything that can help the case, call Irvine detectives at 949.724.7194.

Does anybody know what's going on with this case?  They keep pushing the trial back.  Has anyone gone to the hearings?

Im seeing on line (superior court access for OC) that the defense team filed a motion to dismiss. It must have been denied because they set a Jury trial date in January.

There it is Lpalin in black and white. They matched the DNA.

Guilty, DNA does not lie! Where were all the supporters and family during court?! Obviously not there supporting or they would have heard the results themselves!

There is no way he could of done this. He was almost married to someone while working full time to support his sister and mother like the good person he is in 2005 until the market crashed and he had to sell his house. The cops are worng on this one and they wont admit it because they need someone to blame.

Where are you Lpalin?

Do you remember writing this, "No matter what I will be supportive of Travis... hope he gets the help he needs" [sic]

You lose;  you stupid, foul mouthed, stinky, sociopath wretch.

What is a pre trial conference? Is it worth going and seeing?

I noticed they added back on the kidnapping charge. They must have modified it somehow.

The DNA results were read in court? Do you know why he is going back to arraignment? New charges? How heartbreaking if this is true. I feel for his family and the victims.

Are you ready to apologize to the victims or cops now that you know your wrong? (crickets chirping)

Don't kid yourself. He would easily be out by now if he was innocent.

How do you explain his prowling in the apartment complex and lying about why he was there? Nobody wants to believe this that knows him unfortunately there is evidence against him including the DNA.. It is a match.

Lpalin
Lpalin

Still here! I am so over all of this bullshit though! And out of respect for his family I am shutting my mouth. And if you going to insult someone try better... At least you got the foul mouth right. What is so wrong with hoping someone gets the help they need?

I think it's a meeting between the judge and the defendants attorney and the defendant... In preparation for the jury trial. At this time attorney can ask for a postponement or a trial date can be set. There are probably other negotiations involved. Someone else might have a better answer.

guest

yes very heartbreaking that a rapist is off the streets and that the cops got the right person. I bet the victims are very heartbroken over this. I wish everyone would care about the victims as much as the suspect and his family. Maybe everyone would not be so heartbroken if they sat back and thought for a moment that they could have been this guys next victim.

look up court procedure, there always is another arraignment after a judge deems a person "held to answer" on felony charges after a preliminary hearing.

Lpalin
Lpalin

Right! The cops would just let him go and say Sorry! You are so ignorant if you think that! I am not saying he is def. innocent but come on! The courts would not just let him go with a big "sorry... our bad"

Lpalin
Lpalin

And how do you know? Wont you feel like an asshole IF it comes back negative? Do you honestly think the cops would just let him go and say "sorry we totally fucked your life up" Nope!!!

seems like another ted bundy...appears nice and normal...BUT..the human mind and psyche is very powerful. whatever happened in his past might have created this monster.  every human has 4 endowment; self awareness, conscience, independent will and creative imagination. these give us the ultimate freedom...the power to choose, to respond and to change. he had no conscience, and he had the will to do evil. it was his choice. met the guy BRIEFLY, he was my mechanic. i had no clue. the true victims are the women he hurt. his family should have seen the signs and got him help.

Lpalin
Lpalin

So because I said I know the family well I am their best friend? Again somebody on here making shit up! Maybe you have to read who she was responding to to get how she was talking shit to his supporters! To do that YOU have to scroll down and read! (like many of us have) She, by far, isn't the worst person on here I have always known that.  I am so over all of this! The only reason I got so upset in the first place is because of the people attacking his Mother and Sister. Who cares if I "talk like a sailor" Who the fuck are you to judge me?

Guest

Lpalin, if you click on Sue's name, it will list her posts, and you'll see that she didn't say a word about his family or the people who support them.  I, and several other people did.  But as you said in an earlier post, "I don't apologize for speaking the truth."  Go ahead and defend the family, but at least try to go after the right people.  And like someone else said, I don't think you're doing the family any favors by advertising that their best friend is an angry, combative woman who talks like a sailor on shore leave.

The DNA was announced as a match on CBS last Monday.

Lpalin
Lpalin

Yes I know the family well for a long time. If you know the family why are you not supporting until, at least, the DNA  becomes public? Have you seen the results? Have you been to the court hearings? Maybe.. but probably not. I like how now you finally have better things to do! You have a nice day too

Sue
Sue

I do apologize for the mistake of a male. Do you know the family? I do & I never said anything about the family. Just Travis, so stooop this. He had a double life, unknown to so many people. This is something he has to live with. Let is go..and I can't get over the fact that, that man has been in my house! So, really I have so much better things to do, than to defend myself....You Have a Nice Day :-)

Lpalin
Lpalin

I am not mad! I am disgusted with people blaming his family and talking shit because people were being supportive! This all is so difficult for his family and friends and people like you make it worse! (and you did talk shit about supporters) I do know what I am talking about.... do you? Nope... just some sad person with nothing better to do! BTW... I am a girl and I happen to love my foul mouth!

Sue
Sue

Why do you think Lpalin is so mad? It sure shows with every word he writes...I in turn believe he doesn't know what he is talking about, so he takes it out on this page! Right now Travis's family needs kindness, not foul language.

Lpalin
Lpalin

read it again moron! I never said you were supporting Travis... I said you were talking shit about the people who were supportive of him! Again... read the shit before you speak!

Lpalin
Lpalin

First off... I have not seen the DNA results with my own eyes! I don't believe everything I hear! (I have looked a lot too) And if you read what I have written over and over again I think what happened to these women is DISGUSTING!!! I am sick even thinking anyone could do this. I have also said whoever did this (Travis included) should get the max sentence. So don't try saying I am not sympathetic to the victims. I still can't believe people like you who write shit on here without even knowing what the hell they are talking about! That is the main thing I keep defending! Everything you said you said it without ever reading my other posts! Maybe do your homework before you run your mouth! You might actually come up with something smart next time!

Guest
Guest

I understand supporting his family. I don't understand supporting a rapist. Did you read what he did to those women?? Read it again and think of someone doing that to your mother or your sister. Just close your eyes and imagine it. And don't come back with he is being convicted before he even goes to trial. The DNA is a match even his family knows. How do you support that?? He fucked you by fooling you in to thinking he was someone he is not. You are a victim too.

Lpalin
Lpalin

No matter what I will be supportive of Travis and his family. If he did do this all I hope is that he gets the help he needs. I feel for the victims and I hope they get justice! I have said this before. All I ask is that people who don't know shit about the situation and the family shut the fuck up! My "fowl" aka foul mouth is not hurting his family. It is the people on here saying shit that isn't true about them. And the people defending those people... Sue!!!

Guest
Guest

Lpalin, Your fowl mouth and name calling is NOT helping the family look better in the eyes of anyone who may be saying negative things. If I were in his family's situation I would be asking you to keep your mouth shut. And for the record I am not saying anything negative about his family. I do think you are going to be very disappointed when you finally come to terms with the fact that Travis is guilty. The DNA is a match. I know someone who was interviewed by detectives and was told it was a match. His family knows it is a match.

Sue
Sue

You don't even know what I was talking about do you? I in no way was supporting Travis & no way talking crap on his mom or sister. Evidence shows Travis the man he really is, so your big words of fucking myself don't hurt me in anyway! Have a nice day Lpalin.

Lpalin
Lpalin

Yeah and you kept talking shit about people who were supportive of him! No I don't know you... thank god!!! So how is this for an apology... Go fuck yourself!!! (I don't apologize for speaking the truth)

Sue
Sue

Do you know me Lpalin? Did I say anything about his family? No, I was refering to Travis! So, I don't like the fact that you called me a piece of shit.....I only let people who know me call me names! So you apologize!

Lpalin
Lpalin

Plenty to say! Just so sick of responding to complete morons like yourself! I support Travis' family! At least the things I have said on here are because I know and am supportive of a family I know well and love very much. Unlike people like you... don't have a clue of what you are saying. Just trying to be mean and attack a family that had nothing to do with this. You should feel like a piece of shit cuz that is what you are.

By “brought up the family”, I was referring to people bringing up the SUBJECT of the family on this blog. I apologize if I was not clear.

My first instinct when I heard about the arrest was to be angry for Travis’ sake, because in my opinion the poor kid never had a chance.  I was also angry for my own sake, because I had to watch his train wreck of a life on an almost daily basis, expecting that things would turn out very badly, and not being able to do a thing about it. If my taking the opportunity to vent a little on this blog is “attention-seeking” and “very Irvine” then so be it.

Just the fact that this well-built, 6 foot, 200-pounder has been described by his supporters as being “skinny”and “frail”, and totally incapable of overcoming a woman is a good example of how distorted reality can become when people are blindly trying to defend someone they like, and illustrates why the views of those who are “truly the friends” should be taken with a grain of salt.  As with the European Repair situation, you guys saw only what you were supposed to see, and a lot was changed or left out.  Don’t assume that you know everything about people, and that nobody else has seen them in a different light.

Guest

If you’re so concerned about the grandchild, why did you do your best to draw attention to a brief mention made 6 days ago that would have likely been overlooked?

guest
guest

The friends brought the family up? The amount of complete dishonest crap that is spoken all over this page is baffling, all because ignorant attention-seekers want to feel like they are a part of all the drama. How very "Irvine" of all of you. It's quite amusing actually to those of us who were actually there when the family was so-called "brought-up". This is a terrible situation, for all involved, and in the end the guilty will pay the price (be it Travis or not), and receive the punishment, and hopefully the help that is so desperately needed. Not sure why all the other b.s needs to be brought up by people like you, and I'm sure you will not be the last person to say something completely ridiculous, but just know that to those who are truly the" friends" that you speak of, you sound like a total idiot.

Guest
Guest

Please I beg you...ALL of you. DO NOT BRING UP ANYTHING TO DO WITH "THE GRANDCHILD", there is no place for anything pertaining to that innocent child on this ridiculous blog. You know NOTHING about it (and that is VERY obvious to the people who do), so please keep your ignorant mouth shut.

Guest
Guest

First off, anyone who posts their name on an internet blog would have to be crazy, and I think it’s irresponsible for  you to try to egg someone on to do that.  I hope nobody takes that bait.

Second, (and this is not necessarily directed at you, Matt, but at earlier posters who have complained about the family being criticized), it was the friends who brought up the family.  For those of us who saw a very different side of them, it’s difficult to read all of the “oh, the poor family” stuff, and not speak up.  If someone had spoken up years ago, Travis might not be where he is today.  If even one of their acquaintances begins to see with a more perceptive eye due to something that was said on this blog, then maybe there’s hope for the grandchild.

Gosh, I feel so bad for Travis’ pain, and I’m sure that the victims are looking forward to seeing him again so they can hear his heartfelt apology.  Then they‘ll finally get to see what a kind gentleman he can be when he‘s not busy trying to stick his dick in them.  It’s funny how, over a period of six years, that sincere, incredible pain never surfaced until he was locked up and needed to display his remorse for his loving fans.  Geez, someone hand me a barf bag.  I know you’re just trying to be good friends, but it’s like most of you guys just fell off a turnip truck.

Mattclowe

Agree.  This family should not be criticized by any one person.  Also those who do shouldn't hide behind their name.

Whoever Stan is please stop hiding and state your name.  A little bit of a b*tch to comment on the family in that manner and hide behind your name.  Be a man and state your name buddy.  Anyone who talks shit on the family should state their name or their just a b*tch.

CBS reported yesterday DNA was a match. I worked with his mother for many years..and I know she must feel that her world has ended. But we must not forget the victims their lives will never be the same. LOSE..LOSE situation for everyone. Very sad...

Mattclowe
Mattclowe

To the Victims -  I understand your pain and you deserve justice for your suffering.  It is something that will live with you your entire life.  Please know that I have known him for many years.  His family and his friends are shocked and bewildered by what has happened.  His family is also in huge pain.  We all pray and we all know that if this is 100% your man then before he dies he will make a huge and forth-giving apology to all these other victims.  Just know that the current pain he is receiving at this point in time is so incredible, its almost suicidal and in that sense your justice is being served.

To the people with alias names - Some of you on here are his friends and the ones who say he was a psycho you are completely wrong.  NO ONE SAW this coming, period.  I personally feel that with all of his time, love and energy that he has devoted to his friends over the years would say that Travis is a stand up gentlemen.  To the people that say the family had a bad history of this behavior - you are completely wrong.  Even without a father he was a strong leader to all of his friends.  He was never a follower and helped his friends through situations and gave them strength.  I am also shocked by what has happened and if DNA comes back positive then I know his heart, and he will one day give these innocent women a complete apology.  I know he would need that in his heart before he died.

Lpalin

I cant believe how unbelievably stupid you are! Yeah... blame his family. You have know idea how he was brought up! You did not know anything first hand! The only people who knew first hand were Travis and his family! Do not bring his family into this.... they are going through enough! They are such good people. You obviously do NOT know them at all! Stop talking shit! All you are doing is spreading lame rumors/ lies!!

Screw the family. Stop trying to make them out to be victims here. They are at the very least partially responsible for these atrocities because they contributed to the ass-backwards upbringing that he received. I witnessed it all firsthand. He never did anything wrong. Nothing was ever his fault. Excuse after excuse after excuse was made for him and his antisocial behavior. When you grow up with a mother that not only thinks you're perfect, but flat out lies to cover up the heinous things you've done, you're bound to turn out a bit screwed up. And to no one's surprise, he did.

You must not have read my comment wrong or just felt like being a dick. I believe I said that it is heartbreaking and I feel for the family AND the victims.... I don't believe I said anything about being heartbroken for the suspect. I think that if this is true that he needs a lot of help and I hope he is able to get it. Wow... They way some people act on here is just absurd. Read the comments before lashing out people.

Lpalin

I am not in denial! I never was! All I want is for people like you to stop bringing his family into it! I also want people to wait til results are back and public record! If you read everything I have written you would know that! And yes I do think they would try to hang on to him for as long as they could! You are pretty naive if you think the cops/court would just take blame for all of this IF he was innocent! And his attorney would not tell anyone about his results. So the person who wrote that is full of shit!

Stan

You sound like you're one of the few people that are still in denial. Sooner or later you're going to have to pull your head out and read the writing on the wall. The DNA results are in. The longer they hold him the worse it looks.

Listen please carefully, his attorney has specifically not subpeona the dna, there is a good reason why, and that is because it will negatively impact the case, otherwise he would have and travis would be out on bail.
