GQ Names Newport Beach One of The Worst-Dressed Cities in America

Oh, no they did-n't.

The style writers at GQ penned a list of of the 40 Worst-Dressed Cities in America. It's filled with stereotypical haterade (and possibly truth?).

Our own Newps comes in 29th after other "sartorially-challenged metropolises" including Santa Fe, Vegas and Jersey Shore.

Here's what they had to say:

29. Newport Beach
You pretty much know what to expect from a town whose exuberant claim to fame is being the location of "The O.C." For Newport Beach residents, this dubious honor validated their overblown sense of significance, mistaking as they did the fandom of Mischa Barton with their international relevance. This ritzy coastal town is dedicated to money, showing off that money, year-round tans and a fundamental disconnect from reality. Newport's balls-out ostentation veers dangerously into gaudiness--all flashy excess and no style. (Look no further than "Fashion Island," a bayside destination promising an exotic catwalk of model muses, perhaps, and delivering: a mall.) The diamonds are huge, the Botox abounds (not just on the ladies), and the women are platinum-blonde-and-boob-job clones. Money can buy a lot of things--a hulking white Escalade, a trophy wife--but it sure as shit can't buy class.

Do you agree with the snarky style police?

I'd say Newport Beach people are half-half.  Many are so nice and friendly and although I don't live in Newport, i've often felt welcomed.

However, almost half the time at certain coffee houses and bagel places on PCH (you know the corner), there are some people who really feel their importance is above mine and I've had a few snobby people encounters there.

But, it's all part of socializing, if someone is insecure, they generally clam up and play the snooty role.  True wealth and class doesn't need to make themselves feel important at the expense of others.

It never hurts to nod, smile or respond to a kind greeting.  Unless it's beneath you I suppose.....

Agreed.  Newport as a city has very little unique character or culture.  It's more about fitting in.

So true! I'm surprised there's no mention of all the metro men though!

Live here, love it and completely agree!  Couldn't have said it better myself..........."Keeping up with the Jones'" has clouded the reality of what's really just a crappy (often times scary) appearance.  Stop trying to "one up" the neighbors people and stick to your genuine you!

I never get over the whole Tommy Bahama's with mandals look in the evening. Especially when you're in a nicer restaurant.  Buddy you're out to dinner, not on the beach. And I do want to see your gnarly feet when I'm trying to eat.

I truly wish everyone would stop limping Orange County and Newport Beach together, the county is very diverse and those who live in the Newport Coast are not the same as people who live in North Orange County. I've lived in North Orange County for 10 years, moving from LA because the people are nicer there is much less traffic and I don't have to live in a county that thinks they're better than everyone else. Though there are some key truths to what has been said about Newport Beach, their style is in no way reflective of the entire county!

Actually Nora, I lived in Orange County for 10 years, and the whole "real housewives" look and behavior IS how many Newporters, and OC'ers in general, look and behave.   It is reality, unfortunately.

As far as Newport being labeled worst dressed because of fake boobs, tans, botox, platinum hair and driving Escalades - last time I checked, hair color, skin color, body parts and the kind of car one drives doesn't have a thing to do with one's actual *style of dress.*   There really isn't anything in this snarky assessment of Newport that gets into the actual *clothes* that you see a typical Newporter wearing.  A reminder to the author of this list:   Newporters live at the beach of Southern California.  Lots of sun, sand and surf and tooling around in yachts.  So they're not going to dress like they're walking down a street in a high end district of Chicago or New York.   So even though I don't care for the people of Orange County, I still have to disagree with this assessment.  If you're going to evaluate style of dress then review the actual clothes - not the body parts wearing them, or the type of automobile carrying those clothes home.  And more importantly, keep *geographic location and climate in mind.*

Who says you can't wear a dress shirt tucked out?

This just made my day!   There is no individuality in the Newport Coast area.  They all look the same.   The women are California versions of Snooky.   The guys...not much better.    I love going to LA and Venice Beach and even Long Beach, just so I can see some creativity and individuality.   The OC?  Bleh.    It is really entertaining to live here though because I'm the fashion freak and it's hella fun to annoy the Snooky clones with it.

Catherine, my best friend, is announcing her wedding with a multi-millionaire young man Ronald, who is the CEO of a MNC.What's more interesting? The pair met at a high class millionaire dating club  ---www.WEALTHYCHATS.CoM---, which is noted for the high quality of its members and its friendly atmosphere. However, you don't have to be rich to join them, as you will be able to meet someone rich. Enjoy it!

wtf this this? this is by far the most close-minded thing to say about Newport/OC. Platinum blondes? Don't claim your opinions on the Real Housewives of OC. Those ladies are a disgrace. Nothing like the true people here. F GQ!

i would disagree. there are lots of nice people in NB who have their own California style. Just because they don't wear the staid labels in GQ magazine does not mean they don't have style.
