Kelly Thomas RIP
UPDATE, AUG. 3, 2011, 3;28 P.M.: Calls for resignation, recall in Fullerton over Thomas beating.

ORIGINAL POST, JULY 29, 1 P.M.: All but one of the Fullerton police officers who were involved in the death of Kelly Thomas, the schizophrenic transient who died of multiple injuries to his face and neck after being arrested July 5, are back to work. According to an Orange County Register story today, Fullerton's chief of police, Michael Sellers told an LA-based television news crew that he'd reinstated the officers, but didn't provide any further details or explanation. The Register story also notes that while police officials first claimed that two officers involved in the arrest had suffered broken bones--which would tend to justify serious force by the cops--they now admit that only "soft-tissue" damage was inflicted on them.

"It was more than just fists," Sgt. Andrew Goodrich told the Register, without elaborating while also implying that the officers had hurt their fists in the fight, although readers are left to wonder how that might have happened. As the Weekly has previously reported, a photograph taken of Thomas at the hospital shows a severely battered face, and a video taken at the scene while Thomas was still alive shows onlookers remarking in disgust about the officer's behavior while, in the background, someone, presumably Thomas, can be heard loudly moaning "Dad, dad, dad," over and over.

You can see the photo and check out the video for yourself by visiting our previous post.

While the district attorney is investigating the incident, as it does all officer-involved shootings in Fullerton and other cities, the Register reports that the FBI also has launched a civil rights probe into Thomas's death. Meanwhile, activists are planning a candlelight vigil in memory of Thomas to take place Saturday from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Fullerton's city hall. And keep reading the Friends for Fullerton's Future blog, as they've been on the story from the beginning.

Sure your going to hurt yourself when you beat someone that badly. They are ALL equally guilty - any one of them could have stopped this.

Everyone needs to relax and let the investigation proceed. You are all cowards who hide behind your computer screens. I would love to see how you would handle a combative person trying to hurt you and running away is not an option. I can only imagine what the evil people in society would do to you if the police were not there to protect you. Why don’t you organize protests when predators rape and murder children then get out of prison after only 10 years? You are all pathetic, especially the “person” who advocates killing a police officer! PATHETIC COWARDS!  On a side note, it's telling how horrible grammer and spelling all you cop haters have.  You are so ignorant it's scary!  If you ever need a cop for any reason don't call them! You don't deserve their help!

Just another example of the state of our union. We are OUT OF CONTROL in this country - at every level of society. When is enough going to be enough. How much more of this behavior is it going to take before we take back our country? If we want there to be an America here for the next generation this madness has to stop. Or are we all just too comfortable to be bothered? What are we willing to sacrafice to return America to the decency, honor, and respect of all our fellow citizens it once enjoyed? A city, county, state, and country where our elected officials serve the people that elected them instead of their own special interests or those of foriegn governments. A country where's there's law and respect for law - by both the people AND those who enact and enforce the laws that frame our civility? When? Our elected officials at every level - local, state, and federal - have to go.

Don't let these traitor street terrorist thugs slide by on their greasy lies. All across the country these criminals think they own the place, time to ATTEMPT to set the record straight folks, how long are citizens going to let PAID public servants stomp our face at the request of their own obsessive addictions to predatory violence? Why are predatory thugs behind badges allowed to declare war on the freakin' United States people WHENEVER they find a weaker conveniet HUMAN BEING to stomp to death at a 6 to 1, 1500LBS vs. 150 LB ratio? What injustice, what a sickening sight to see America reduced to thugs running the streets like Jackals. With all due respect for the police officers who have honor, I hope it is just a minority amongst you giving US all a worse name, across the country this appears terminal, a declaration of war systemically. You might as well send these guys to the Taliban, they are traitors of public honor and integrity.

=====http://www.fullertonsfuture.or... According to our sources:Officer Jay Cicinelli was thereOfficer Kenton Hampton was thereOfficer Manny Ramos was thereOfficer Joe Wolfe was thereOfficer James Blatney was there

The sixth officer would have been a sargent called to the scene due to the use of a Taser.  There are two patrol sargents not reporting for duty at the moment who may have been on duty that night. When we figure out which one was there, we’ll let you know.

We rescue and care for a strayed animals on street. Kelly Thomas is only another drifter in Orange County, one less sore eyes to see in Fullerton. There was not reason to continue to beat a man's head into concrete, smash his face and skull with steel flashlight, hog tie him, taser, etc to death. This was a brutal MURDER by a pack of animals with honorable badges and protections from their leader and politicans. Orange County District  Attorney Office is utterly incompetent. Life before, the Fed and FBI are our only hope.In Orange County, similar incidents are almost never prosecuted. It takes a video, a death, and large scale media coverage to get any justice at all. My prayers go out to Kelly, not to his family. Praying that you have now found peace wherever you may be. The reason I say not to his family is for the reason that this 37 year old man has been homeless for the past how long? And none of his family including his father has looked out for him. If you know your son is mentally I'll why would you allow him to be out in the streets. This case is all about the money. Cops will be cops no matter what yes they protect us but the same time they harm us. Trust me when I say they are going to investigate and these cops are going to be let go easy watch and see. I was sexually assaulted by a cop he was my stepdad and guess what nothing happened he is still a police officer and a crooked one too. So I know from personal experience the ones to win this case is not going to be the people it's going to be them! All I can say at least Kelly isn't suffering anymore.

It appears that every officer involved in this murder under color of law should be tried along with their supervisors as accessories after the fact. Let's have some citizen introduce this case to a grand jury and, if the DA declines to prosecute everyone who is indicted, indict him as an accessory as well.

I have commented at Least A Dozen times about the increase in Orange County Police Corruption across the board. I am a retired Police Officer and I have never witnessed such a huge increase in OC Police Corruption as I have witnessed in the past 5 years. This editor should do an in depth piece on the alarming level of OC cops involved in various crimes alone this past 2 years. It should concern everyone because these same criminals with a badge are out their patroling the streets, arresting you and I and testifying in a court room WHEN THEY ARE CRIMINALS THEMSELVES!!!!

Kelly was cared for by his family by all accounts. He had multiple places to stay but chose to be homeless most of the time.

Yes. The citizens need to take charge of the application of law to ensure justice. The police and DAs are miserable failures.

I WAS IN WEST VIRGINIA AND MY TRUCK HAD BROKE DOWN, GOT IT RUNNING. A POLICE OFFICER PULLS UP AND WALKS UP TO MY TRUCK . I  TOLD HIM THAT I HAD A LITTLE ENGINE TROUBLE BUT FIXED. THE COP THEN BREAKS MY TAIL LIGHT COVER AND TELLS ME I HAVE TO GET IT FIXED OR GET A TICKET. THE DUMMY DID IT ON PURPOSE JUST SWINGING THAT NIGHT STICK AROUND AND HIT IT. SO  I WALKED UP TO AN AUTO PARTS STORE GOT A NEW TAIL LIGHT COVER REPLACED MY OLD ONE AND LEFT WEST VIRGINA FOR GOOD AND WILL NEVER GO BACK, JUST TO SHOW THAT SOME COPS ARE CROOKED.

And how many police officers die in the line of duty? Your statement "defenseless policeman" relays your ignorance of those MEN and WOMEN that don the badge every day. Deaths and injury are routine. Understanding of those suffering mental health issues and those that wear the badge is what's needed. Not immature remarks...

You are about as full of horseshit as the horse you rode in on.  Please identify the agency you allegedly worked for and share with us a couple of specific examples of this runaway corruption.  By the way, if you saw any of it while on the job, what did you do?   Did you inform IA, or just look the other way?   Without question, the new breed Officer is different in many ways.  They were raised under a different work ethic and set of societial values.  That doesn't make them any better, or worse than anyone from the past who wore a badge.  Granted, from time to time, a few "weak sisters" may seccumb to the temptations of the street, but the majority are honest, hard working and dedicated people.  In a perfect world, we wouldn't need Police Officers and they could work in professions where success and money come easy.  However, that isn't the way it is and despite the intensive screening process applicants go through, a few bad apples slip through.  If you actually wore a badge, then you know that the one thing we hate more than criminals is a bad Cop, who gives us all a black eye.  Most of us would drop everything we were doing to get rid of such an actor.  P.S. I did work with a few corrupt Cops in my time, but it was the Chief of Police and not a rank and file Officer.  Yes, I did try and do this character, but he was teflon coated and managed to stay out of the joint. Not being able to do that guy was my only regret in 35 years on the job.

Yeah. We can not judge his family. We don't know what Kelly's fathers intentions were. If Kelly chose to be homeless, that is his own free-will decision. Although, Kelly had some illness that required special attention, I still don't blame the father. Kelly has been homeless for so many years, he's been fine. So now, when something happens, all a sudden his Father gets blamed. Lastly, personally I don't think his father just wants money off this case, he wants closure and justice for his son. Not because his son was homeless, doesn't mean he hates his son. Kelly's Father is a retired Deputy from the Sheriffs Office, i'm sure he has a nice living.

who cares if they die in the line of duty.  they know what they are headed for.  they sign up for it, but an American citizen who was mentally ill does not sign up to be beaten by the very people who are supposed to protect him...losers, all of them.  they need to FRY!

Deaths aren't routine at all. There are plenty of jobs more dangerous than being a LEO. Driving a truck for instance. And if it weren't for the fact that cops drive cars all day, everyday the safety factor increases by half or more last time I looked at the numbers. And I'm not sure it is possible for a human being to sustain the evident damage that Kelly Thomas endured and still offer meaningful resistance.

I am prior LEO and know the difference. Show me the PPCT tactics that lead to the type of trauma this guy suffered and I'll apologize for jumping to conclusions. I'm about to the point that I'm with a previous poster when they said that the answer to this overstepping by police is best addressed via sniper tactics.

Here is an example, offender: Officer P McMullin, Feb 25 2006 12:16am UC Gang Unit OPD or orange police dept,   Did along with 2 other officers slam me much further into the ground than should be possible, more than a few times.of course I was already on the ground with my hands out in front of me. being that I am EX MILITARY, i was quite aware what was expected of me. I was arrested for evading and DUI, but at 12 midnight in old town orange I was not stopping for a blacked out unmarked gang unit vehicle, Which I did not know was that at the time All I knew was that I was being chased by a dark vehicle, IM sure your remarks to this will Im sure be limited to your own experiences. But I am White and I was driving a lifted truck, going home, well being that the chase ended in front of my home. my neighbors saw what happened, and the photos dont lie, neither do I for that matter. but as a result I dont care for or trust cops, I know that cops deal with bad people on regular basis and become desensitized by it, now I to am desensitized by a group of bad cops. you all are as far as IM concerned by not getting the bad apples out of your dept. By the way with the exception of Officer McMullin his other 2 partners in crime are no longer with the dept.  but he made Detective and lied in court. Justice my ass.   SignedFear of Retailation

typical officer is a arrogant, narcisist who can't do anything else for a living and always wished he were stronger than he really is.  you  cops are WORTHLESS, and any dumbass who justifies the beating needs a similar beating on him/herself.  those cops MUST BE tried as murderers.  If not, a sniper needs to put a bullet in ther middle of each of their foreheads.

I'm Glad your not a cop. You have some serious anger issues. I know a few police officers who have a reputation of being violent, do drugs, and drive drunk. Just because you are a cop does NOT mean the laws do NOT apply. These officers should be held liable for this poor mans death. Just because he was a man who lived on the streets doesn't mean he has no rights. This was someones child who was screaming for Dad when he was dying because he was being beat to death by these cops. What if it was your child?

I have to agree with you Patrick.  As a retired Military enlisted man, I tend to believe in alll professions you have good and bad.  But, one other thing people tend to forget is that when you encounter a police officer, you don't know what call he has just came from or how many times he's had to deal with serious criminals who are trying to kill him.  So, the next time a person encounters a police officer, try to remember that when officers see scum all the time, they may be apprehensive at first, but if you are polite and courteous to the officer you'll be just fine.  I'd like to see the stats on how many times police are physically harming folks who comply with the officers orders, speak politely and don't argue.  I'll be it's not many..  Just my two thoughts.

As Chris Rock says in his funny video about police traffic stops, "Obey the Law". Here's Chris Rock to tell you more in this hilarious youtube video:

yes they MUST be tried for murder... but they get their jobs back instead.... something is very wrong with the world, and those that can look past such acts of violence for those paid to enforce the law and punish those who defend themselves harshly must be seen as having very self serving agendas....
