[UPDATED with Hunting Season Open:] Coyotes Knock Down Woman, Snatch Her Yorkie

UPDATE, JULY 29, 8:01 P.M.: To butcher they lyrics sung by the late, great Warren Zevon, "Send hunters, guns and money--hah! Dad get me out of this."

Following Tuesday morning's attack that knocked down a 64-year-old Laguna Woods woman and ended the life of her 12-year-old Yorkie, the City Council for the town of mostly retirees voted last night to declare hunting season on coyotes.

Licensed exterminators, veterinarians or other "animal-control professionals" (read: bounty hunters) can now get permits to gun down coyotes in Lagunas Woods following the council vote.

City leaders explained the "urgency order," which goes into effect immediately without the need for a second reading at a later council meeting, is vital not so much because of the recent rash of coyote attacks and pet snatchings blamed on the roving beasts, but the possibility of even more to come.

Limits on hunting hours, locations and weapon calibers are spelled out in the licenses to kill.

UPDATE, JULY 27, 12:49 P.M.: The woman knocked down by two coyotes who snatched and killed her 12-year-old pet Yorkshire terrier Pooh has been identified as Karen Sherif, 64, of Laguna Woods.

The Laguna Beach Police Department, whose Animal Services division took Tuesday's 10:10 a.m. call, set two traps after the attack, but the coyotes have so far escaped capture.

Here's the account Sherif provided to the Los Angeles Times:

Pooh, a slow mover, stopped to smell a bench on Via Alhambra, and Sherif walked a few steps ahead. All of the sudden, she heard a yelp and turned around to find a coyote with her dog in its mouth.

"I just started screaming at the top of my lungs," Sherif said.

The coyote took off, dragging Sherif into the road by Pooh's leash. Sherif let go of the leash as she fell, and neighbors rushed out of their homes to help. One called the police and another ran after the coyote.

But it was too late. Pooh's body was found about 100 feet away, her neck broken.

Laguna Beach's Animal Services division previously put out this primer to help Laguna Beach and Laguna Woods residents deal with coyotes and predatory cats

ORIGINAL POST, JULY 27, 10:48 A.M.: An unidentified woman was treated for minor injuries after being knocked down by a pair of roving coyotes and having her pet Yorkie snatched away from her in the Laguna Woods area Tuesday.

No word on whether one coyote remarked to the other while dashing away that the pooch's liver would be served with some fava beans and a nice chianti.

Spotting coyotes at night or around sun up is not unusual in several parts of Orange County, and Laguna Beach and nearby Laguna Woods has been besieged of late by Wile E. Coyote's cousins snagging pets.

What was unusual about the incident on Via Alhambra was it happened in broad daylight, according to the Laguna Beach Police Department's Animal Services division, which took the original call about Tuesday's 10:10 a.m. attack in Laguna Woods.

Authorities believe abundant plant life brought on by heavy winter rains has drawn to populated areas more rabbits, snakes and mice that coyotes prey upon. The jackal have in turn discovered bounties of dogs, cats and pet food waiting for them.

Folks are advised to keep pets indoors at night and stow away uneaten pet food. Those walking dogs should keep them on short leashes and carry sticks to shoo away coyotes, who are often frightened away by the sight of humans extending their arms out to appear even larger.

I hate to tell you, but most of your dogs are inbred and filled with genetic defects, with no intelligence or beauty compared to a coyote, wild dog, or wolf, which you'd gladly slaughter for more golf courses and mcmansions for all your douchy friends in the oc...

You're killing a brilliant, beautiful animal to keep all the dumb, ugly ones safe- something the oc repubs should be against in principle...oh, and the wild animal was there first, of course, which naturally doesn't matter...

A yorkshire terrier is a mentally and physically handicapped dog, the human equivalent of which would probably be so freakish that you wouldn't be able to hold a straight face while talking to them, if you were able to drop your pretensions for half a minute to have a word with such a person, which none of you likely has, since no such person could afford to live in your gated community, and most of you would abandon such a person if they were your relative...

of course the pet has a carbon footprint from all the processed dog food and other amenities it needs, while the coyote cleans up the environment and prevents the spread of disease through decaying animals...but that doesn't matter either...

But maybe you all just mean that Coker shouldn't be giving coyotes wine, which I agree with....

Why don't you people go back to what you know best and keep trying to deny gay people civil rights because of what some archaic book written during a time when slavery and rape weren't one of the ten worst crimes a person could commit...bow down to the holy prepuce

People who live near wildlife need to be aware that their beloved pets are just a tasty snack to a hungry coyote, or wolf, or mountain lion, or racoon (they eat cats).

I root for the Coyotes. Feel worse for them then some stupid dog. Get over it people. Everyone that lives in any part that borders a wilderness area should realize that you are the invader and you are the criminal. Why is it that pet owners can never be objective and realize that their furry friend is a nuisance and pest to others and a meal in this case for bigger animals. Just like smokers who get offended if you tell them not to smoke or to smoke outside or elsewhere. Your rights end where another's begin. Unfortunately we feel it's our right to exterminate animals that are living in their natural environment just because their natural behaviour puts us in an uncomfortable situation based on our ever encroaching living spaces.

i agree with socals comments.also i thinkwhile it is sad that the lady lost her pet, at the same time theres no good reason to make it open season on the coyotes.coyotes have lived here for in forever and this is where they belong.i do not see any sense in killing the coyotes.

me and my g/f had this strange idea to lay in a field with like i dunno some type of dessert on our naked bodies and thought it would be cool if the coyotes came b/c of the scent... weird story about the terrier and even more weird is she has a terrier too, as with being afraid of coyotes well i sure hope that i am less in danger of being attacked by one than normal. being attacked by a coyote b/c the animal is dangerous yes it would suck but it's a wild animal all animals have an instinct and it is run. the animal kingdom has spoken and the dog s dead, and remembered animals in the wild are over run by society and it has been nice being on watch for them when I was in the out door s so killing the one animal in the family of coyotes doesn't make sense fo one they have all been living the same way as dogs in a pack. the terrier didn't do anything but protect the old lady and should be remembered as a hero, and on the other side of the story the pack finding out the funny thing their cub did is great for both them and wild ambush parties that you hear so much of so often.

I am so confused, where are the rude comments? We moved into coyote territory and have taken over their homes. I am a dog owner and I understand that this a very hard loss but that doesn't give the right to open up hunting season so we can exterminate. More harm will come from allowing hunting in a planned community. Plus every time a companion whether it be a dog, a boyfriend/girlfriend, a lover or whatever is taken from us, there isn't a vote on if we should open up hunting season to gun down these people who have stolen our companions.

Next! Open season on sharks! I love reading about California! I think it's more beautiful than Hawaii.Plus..., it's the home of the most Beautiful Woman I have ever seen, Gwen Stefani!!!Vinnie... From The Bronx!!!

Hmmm. Gwen Stefani's the "most Beautiful Woman" you've ever seen? Sorry, pal, but that opinion and the plethora of exclamation points just reinforced every Californian's preconceived notions about denizens of da Bronx!!! Your moniker doesn't help, either ...

Yorkshire terrier should be served with a crisp Riesling and certainly not a Chianti.

This comment is rude and inappropriate, but seems so out of place that I wonder if it's an embarrassing faux pas--not meant to have been posted here? If it's purposeful, I'm shaking my head at the author's audacity.

I'm afraid Coker writes tripe like this ALL the time. He barely respects us two-legged "bitches" much less the four-legged ones...

So sad that you feel you must joke about the death of a beloved pet. Does your family ever read your stories? How ashamed they must be.

Hey frustrated "comedy" writer - I don't think this is the time or place for your bad taste. This had to be an absolutely terrifying moment for the women getting attacked by coyotes AND losing her pet of 12 years!

This writer should be suspended for his unprofessional and heartless comments.  The publisher and the writer owe this woman and their readership (which I hope drops significantly) an apology.

Mr. Coker, I believe you owe your readers an apology. There is a time for humor...but this was not the time.

What a comment to make. This is a retirement community, it was probably an elderly lady's long time companion. And to make a statement or joke about eating her dog was really in bad taste.  What if it was the writers long time pet, I think he would have been a little more sensitive about the situation. What a jerk.

Mama

Unbelievable that this writer could put down on paper such inappropriate jokes and heartless chatter about someone's beloved pet.  As a pet owner, we love our pets as we do our children.  This writer, Matt Coker, needs a lesson in humility, compassion, and common respect.  Shame on you Matt Coker.  You are a sad human being.

What rude comments to make...you obviously don't have a sense of humor or respect

I'm sure if this was your dog or a friend's dog you would not be making jokes about the dog being taken and this is inappropriate!  Try showing a little compassion especially since we are talking about someone's companion.  Just because it is a dog doesn't mean you should be making such comments!
