Anyone who shrugs off the worth of a can of soup wouldn't get along very well with Andy Warhol. Or with Ellie Weaver, for that matter.

She's the administrative coordinator at Costa Mesa's Someone Cares Soup Kitchen, which serves about 350 people a day, she says (they serve from 1 to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday and from 9 to 11 a.m. on weekends).
"We serve food to people who aren't just homeless, but who are also down on their times," Weaver said.

The volunteer-driven nonprofit, which also offers tutoring for kindergarteners through third-graders, is getting swanky Saturday night. Tickets to Someone Cares' 25th anniversary gala sold for $135 a pop; all of the available 110 tickets sold, Weaver said.

She said that type of community involvement is what's helped them thrive for a quarter of a century.

"The event is called 'Dreams Come True' and it's about having 25 years of support from our community, a grassroots people."

Some local bigwigs, like former Newport Beach Mayor Evelyn Hart, who serves on Someone Cares' advisory board, are scheduled to attend.
