What's So Wrong With Calling Santa Ana a Latino City?

Thumbnail image for Santa-Ana-City-Logo.jpg
Man, SanTana cracks me up sometimes--okay, ALL THE TIME. The Orange County Register's Andrew Galvin wrote a good piece yesterday ostensibly about efforts by Latino activists to try and persuade the SanTana City Council at this past Monday's meeting to ask its police department to stop impounding vehicles simply because illegal immigrants own them. Part of their appeal was ethnic solidarity--the city is the largest in the United States with an all-Latino city council--but the councilmembers wisely waved that request off.

But then, they just went overboard.

At the meeting, councilmember Vincent Sarmiento, the sole non-Mexi on the council (he's Bolivian, the Mexicans of South America) took back a comment he made at the previous meeting-that SanTana was a "Latino city."

"The question of how Latino this city's identity is, or should be, keeps cropping up, creating a bit of a minefield for the all-Latino City Council, Galvin wrote, adding that Sarmiento told residents at this past meeting that he regretted his previous comment. "We're a multicultural city, and that's what I should have called the city. It isn't a Latino city. It's a multicultural city that's predominantly Latino."

Oh, please. SanTana is one of the most-Latino cities in the United States--what's so wrong with calling it a "Latino city"? Latinos make up only about half of Albuquerque's residents, but no one in the city gets offended if you call it a Hispanic town--hell, they love it, because it plays to their fantasy that everyone is descended from pure-blooded conquistadors. No one bats an eye if someone described Boston as an Irish city, even if the micks lost their demographic control decades ago. Same with noting Milwaukee and its Teutonic essence, Minneapolis and its Scandinavian heritage, the whole of Jersey as Italian-American paradise, and the Miami area as a Cuban enclave. Saying these things don't denigrate Boston's Italians, Milwaukee's Laotians, the Twin Cities' Hmongs and Somalis; they're as much a part of those towns as any ethnic groups.

But you say SanTana is a Latino town, and people start railing about reverse racism and Reconquista--just look at the comments left by whiners when I spell the city's name as SanTana. Shit, people: we gotta learn from El Paso, a place so Mexican that an Irish guy was recently the head of the Mexican American Bar Association, a place so paisa that its premier Latino publishing house is run by a gabacho, a town so accepting of its Mexican reality that no one has a problem--so why should we? Calling SanTana Latino doesn't take away from its Cambodians, its Vietnamese, its gabachos, Samoans and mariposas. Just because it's a Latino city doesn't mean SanTana won't gentrify, won't improve, won't blah blah blah.

For crying out loud, look at the city's official name--it ain't St. Anne, son. This city and its fear of itself, I swear...

Isn't that cholo for homosexual? Like mariquita in real Spanish? And if so, when did they become and ethnic group?

On the other hand...This is a good start, Arellano recognizes that ethnic solidarity motivates the 'activists' and is supportive, or at least neutral, on their activities. Now he just needs to make the step and recognize that whites have the same right to ethnic activism as any other group.

Careful Mitch. GA will remind you that ethnic activism of any kind by Anglos is racism.

Category mistake. It ain't 'Latino' -- a fake designation -- its Mexican (notice all the other groups you referred to, you referred to by exact nationality.

And by your logic, we can start calling the US a white country. And if you look at everything from the original naturalization laws to the first militia, that's what its founders thought.

Gus,

Why are you intentionally misleading your readers saying the police department impounds vehicles simply because they are owned by illegals? It doesn't say anything of the sort in Galvin's article. Instead, it says that "activists on behalf of undocumented immigrants want Santa Ana to stop impounding cars of unlicensed drivers who are caught at DUI checkpoints." In other words, an unlicensed driver may have the car he or she is driving impounded regardless of who the owner is. Your whole premise does not even make sense.

Gustavo,

I am fine with them calling it a latino city... I'm fine with Albuquerque being a hispanic town... New Orleans can even be a chocolate pudding swirl or whatever Ray Nagin tried to call it. What I'm not fine with is that pendejo's like you would be screeming from the trees if anyone dare call Huntington Beach a German town... or Diamond Bar a Chinese town or San Pedro a Slavic town.

By the way you get what you dish... Maybe if you didnt cheapen the word racism by throwing it around like Adam "Pac Man" Jones makin it rain in a strip club we would take you a bit more seriously!

The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion."- United States Constitution,Article IV, Section 4

This invasion through the meddling and subterfuge of La Raza, MALDEF, LULAC, MEChA, the endless parade of anchor babies, and the Mexican government has overwhelmed the Border Patrol and law enforcement, devastated communities, ruined the environment, and has tested the patience and pocketbooks of American taxpayers. And it has become increasingly arrogant and violent.

The constant in-our-face chauvinism is proof that hordes of illegal aliens are not just a menace for border states.

In terms of our social services, this presents a tremendous strain, particularly on quality of life of neighborhoods, schools, and our health care system for starters. For illegal aliens in Orange County, Santa Ana is just a giant petri dish (left uncovered) from which the virus spreads to other parts of California and the nation.

And thanks to the likes of Cecila Munoz of La Raza, and the cozen award winning Janet Napolitano, illegal aliens caught trying to enter the US across the southwest border have an 80 percent chance of being released immediately because with current numbers being processed, we lack the holding facilities to accomodate hundreds of thousands more. Before being released, the illegals are given a court summons, better known as a "notice to appear," which allows them to remain in the US pending an immigration hearing. The Border Patrol more accurately calls them "notices to disappear," since some 99 percent never show up for these hearings.

What would we expect from people who are predisposed to lawlessness? It is hard to fathom that we Americans are supposed to welcome the nonstop deluge or face charges of racism.

The illegal alien population increased from 2.9 million in 1988 to 13 million in 2004. The numbers of illegal aliens coming into the US currently has far exceeded the totalnumbers of all legal immigrants who have come to this country during our 400 year history.

The rampant illegal alien invasion has an enormous impact on crime, fraud, and prison populations. It is a tremendous burden never before seen by any nation.

Federal authorities uncovered a crime syndicate specializing in the distribution of millions of phony documents to illegal aliens nationwide (five million to the Los Angelesarea alone), including high-quality Social Security cards, resident alien cards, driver's licenses, birth certificates, marriage licenses, work authorization documents, and utility bills from Mexico. It was so sophisticated that syndicate leaders were charging franchise fees for smaller cells to operate in the US.

When complete, the federal government will spend a staggering $270 + billion to rebuild in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. This is what Americans pay each year and a half for the illegal alien invasion. If the government knew there would be a Hurricane Katrina every year and a half and did nothing about it, wouldn't you say the government was being negligent? So why do we turn a blind eye and let it get away with ignoring the illegal alien tsunami and the costs of breaking into the country at 35,000 per day?

Since the gold medal award winning champion of illegal aliens are Mexican citizens, this blatant rip-off amounts to a huge subsidy to the parasitic Mexican government that neither appreciates nor deserves it. In fact, the billions we spend to educate Mexican children in our public screwls dwarfs the $90 billion we will send to Mexico this year.

What's so wrong with thanking, and showing gratitude to American citizens by respecting our laws, our language and our culture?

Gustavo, what good is there being a racist super hero when you can't even go out on a school night?

I think the City Officals, including the Mayor of Santa Ana all need to be checked out like the City of Bell!! They all live lavashly, there's got to be corruption. There's many things that can be corrected here. There's no control. Their sweating me for a beautiful fence I have, well the shit holes down the street can have Mini Swap Meets on the streets during garage sale days!! It's a mess!!! I've lived here since 1972 and it's changed drastically for the worst. When I can financially get on my feet again I'm moving from here. There's no control. The City is basically "Like Little Mexico" I'm mexican myself but I was born and raised here and so were my Parents, GrandParents. Something's just not right...

Are u really a doc or do just own a liquor store with a fake Anglo name. Its a shame that there isn't any "Asian cities" due to the fact that your people mimic and follow Caucasians like sheep into every predominantly white suburban city. One more thing Bok Sim Asian females obsession/infatuation with White men really is PATHETIC and I AM WHITE!!!! I have turned down many of them simply by saying "I don't date ORIENTALS". HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

It's not the smell that bothers me. It's the nasty taste in my mouth that I can't get rid of for three days that upsets me everytime I drive through it.

But I wonder...the majority of people who make comments like that–have they ever been to Santa Ana? Or do they only know what they read in Ze Register?

Why trying calling it something else just to give the city a different image. If you were born and raised here you know who and what makes this city. And the people obviously like it here to stay living here.

Ben Dayhoe

Every time someone reads a headline about Santa Ana it's "murder this", "gunshots that", "Stabba Ana", "Gentrification City", blah, blah, blah.

Maybe they think that by not labeling our City as a "Latino City" (but rather a "Multicultural City") that will change outsider's perceptions that this town consists of nothing but poor Latinos, on the edge of eviction, just waiting to kill each other.

You know, since that's all that people (outsiders) seem to think about our town.

No? Well it was worth a shot ;)
