It's a bird! It's a plane! It's . . . actually a bird. An angry bird! On a soapbox!

Flying through the finish line at the always-wacky Red Bull Soapbox Race was Angry Bird Droppings, a Garden Grove-based team made of former UCI engineering students. With a red feathered vehicle modeled after the wildly popular mobile phone game, the five-man group (Nathan Nguyen, Hanson Yu, Joseph Carbajal, Phong Trac and Yosuke Arai) took second place out of 34 at the annual event held on Saturday in Los Angeles.

Before the race, 26-year-old driver Nguyen told Red Bull: "There's something funny about a car with feathers, but looks are deceiving: inside this bird will be a lean, mean, winning machine!"

Scores were based on speed, showmanship and creativity. First place went to East Los Angeles' Lakers FanWagon, which won a day with Red Bull's NASCAR team. For coming in second, Angry Bird Droppings earned a ride-a-long in a 750hp vehicle with trophy sport truck driver and Red Bull athlete Bryce Menzies.

The team's Facebook page reads: "We're passionately focused on being the coolest group out there!"

There's no contest.

The team sketched out its big entrance, which included hatching eggs, portly pigs, bursting brick walls, and even a feather canon.
