It's Not a Sign from God: OC Atheists Spread the Word

Jesus-looks-up-150.jpg
"What the hell?"
An Orange County secular group has put up a billboard at a busy Huntington Beach corner informing atheists they do not walk alone in their lack of faith.

"Don't Believe in God? You Are Not Alone" states the sign at Beach Boulevard and Edinger Avenue, which also includes "OrangeCoR.org," the web address for the Orange County Coalition for Reason.

OrangeCoR is the local outpost for a national organization that has pulled similar stunts in Orlando, Florida, Fort Worth, Texas, and Duluth, Minnesota.

The national organization kicked in the $6,000 required to erect the 14x48-foot sign at the Surf City intersection.

Here is the sign:

Don't-Believe-in-God-sign.jpg

"The Orange County Coalition of Reason (OC CoR) is a collection of atheist, freethought and humanist groups working together to increase awareness of non-theist issues and foster community among members," reads the OrangeCoR home page. "Each member group in the OC CoR is independently run and has a slightly different approach to the goal of spreading the idea of non-theism. We believe this to be our strength as a coalition--different people from different backgrounds can all find a group that matches their own approach toward these issues."

For those of you that don't believe in a higher power, call it whatever you may, tell me what keeps you breathing at night when you're asleep?  Your innate intelligence came from somewhere.  Let's just all believe in the power of loving each other and doing the right thing.  Oh and while you're doing that pick up a book called The Finger Print of God.  It's written by scientists.  Kind of heavy reading but the end will really blow you away.  Basically, these scientist say that if the world had been created one one thousandth of a second earlier or later the earth would not exist.  They also state if you don't think there is a higher power - think again.   Having said that, it doesn't mean that people of religion have it down or are any better than anyone else.  I just hope the non-theist don't sell themselves short when the come upon a situation of using their own "higher power" to draw strength, compassion, self preservation (may you never have to experience that) or just showing love to someone in need. We are all higher Be-ings.  We just have never been taught how to use those powers.  Believe in yourself.

The sign made me smile. Thank you, OC CoR, for reminding me that I am not alone in my beliefs.

To Christians (and those of other religions) who are offended, this sign isn't evangelism; it's not trying to convert you, or ridicule your beliefs. It's not for you. It's a sign of friendship for other atheists. Let it be.

HAHAHAHA! Silly atheists, what do they all do in their group, talk about how great it will be when they die and then CEASE TO EXIST? Or maybe about how their lives have no purpose or meaning and when they die, cold and alone, nobody will care, the world will forget about them, and they will be gone forever. Sounds like such a fun group to be a part of! Where do I sign up?

The bible is a 2000 year old document that has no legitimacy in modern day American society, the Christians that read it don't even understand it and have said so, neither did the people of those days. Even some of Jesus' own followers asked him what he meant after he spoke to them in parables and besides the Sumarians were on the earth 6000 years before the Egyptians and the Egyptians were here 4000 years before the bible was even thought of or written about so how do you account for all of those years before? There are missing books to the bible and no one knows where they went, the Christians believe that the earth was created only 6 thousand years ago when there is proof that there is a one million year old human skeleton mummy out there that they called Lucy which proves that Christianity is a lie.

I think it's an excellent idea because the Christians are the hypocrites that got us into these 2 false wars of lies and attrition in Iraq and Afghanistan and have cost us $20 BILLION over 10 years looking for one man that George W.anker Bush stated that he did not care about and did not pay that much attention to. He claimed that God told him to run for President and then lied about everything he did by violating the Geneva Conventions and the Constitution over 750 times, why hasn't he been brought up on charges? He was even a criminal when he was in the Governorship of Texas because I was there then and the people there hated him, he even had a website dedicated to himself entitled http://www.hated,com. There are over 550 religions in the world today and the Christians think that only thier invisable man up in the sky is gonna come down and save them, why would a benevolent invisable person save only them? Even though the republinuts are trying to take credit for killing Bin Ladin thier man says though shalt not kill even though the Dems did the job/s that the republinuts can't or coudn't. Carl Rove is and idiot just like Bush/Cheney/Rice/Rumsfeld. Rice lied under oath on a congreesional panel.

Good for them to express their beliefs, as I Christian I fully respect them it's better than looking at hate mongering signs that the WBC puts up

Ahhhh, we atheists DO believe in ourselves. We know that we are all we've got. We don't run and hide or cloak ourselves in ancient, primitive beliefs. We believe in what we can do, the power of human beings to affect change for the better and to serve one another because we recognize that, as humans, we are all in this together.

Rstemmler24
Rstemmler24

Um, it may surprise religious sheeple but atheists believe that it's life now that matters. What we do in the here and now that is important. Christians can wait until after they die to do the right thing but we atheists, we're doing the right thing now, in this life. Get a grip.

If you're silly (stupid) enough, to believe in the bible, the torah, the Koran, and you believe that earth is 6000 years old, and you believe that there's life after this one (show me the proof!), then I'd like to do business with you: I have a bridge in the middle of the ocean to sell you for $ 25, 000.00 ONLY. Do we have a deal?

No, it's called accepting reality. But if the wishful thinking helps you get through the day, have at it. Oh, and PLEASE don't call me a name again, my laughing disturbs the people around me.

Honey, get your religion out of my neighborhood. Oh, wait, we are supposed to "tolerate" religion. OK, I can tolerate it, but I sure as hell can't respect it. It's garbage.

It's called freedom of religion. You can have your beliefs. I can have mine. Or would you prefer a world in which no one is free to think for themselves?

skeptic

But you and your friends can push your beliefs in my face, I get it. The Atheists have started posting largely in response to the tradition of Theists posting their beliefs.

If you beleive in Rick Warren then you are a Christian Hypocrite because Warren thinks that humans (whether they be gay or not) should be killed. It was for Jewish sociey of the time and not for modern day man because we are not jews.

Hola Amigo!

The Christians also won’t get the ACLU to represent them (As if the ACLU would ever rep a Christian anyways) go to court and force it to be removed under the imaginary Separation of Church and State Law which the superiorly educated Atheists BELIEVE is in the constitution but alas is as imaginary as they claim the Christians God to be.

So just what do you believe the state religion should be? Do you really want your children's teachers teaching them religion? What if their theology seriously disagrees with yours? If you were a teacher, would you be OK with teaching the state religion if it interfered with your beliefs? Keeping religion out of government institutions is protection of my AND your religious rights.

Ronnie

That's blatantly false. The ACLU is there to protect civil rights. Why else would they represent Nazis in a free speech case? It just so happens that there isn't a whole lot (despite your perceived slights) of Christian persecution going on.

Truth according to a Roman emperor who murdered his wife and son.

God (go ahead, prove I'm not)
God (go ahead, prove I'm not)

I'm still trying to figure out which book is the ultimate truth: "The Bible", "The Torah", "The Quran", or "Twilight: New Moon". They all make such compelling arguments.

Yes Cameron. If you see it that way. But at least we accept reality. We don't pretend. Life is good when all people believe in truth, harmony and ACCEPT love into their hearts. Acceptance trumps Tolerance. I bid you Peace.

What a tricky subject.  Not because more people kill each other over differences in religious beliefs than any other reason, but because of the possible uprising there would be if people were educated enough to understand the truth about the purpose of religion.  The bible is a collection of several "stories" from several different sources.  They all have a common theme:  give the poor and hopeless something to concentrate on like "reincarnation" and "heaven" to take the focus off of just how crappy their life really is.  It gives the ability for the elite to control the masses.  If everyone were to accept reality, there would be an uprising.  Religion is no different than taxes.  It is a way for the elite to control the weak.  The poor use religion to explain away their miserable lives and the rich use it to network with other rich people.  It doesn't take faith to believe in God, it takes a lack of confidence in understanding that what we have is a special opportunity to live life on this planet and make the best of it during the one shot we get at it.  To understand that there is no Heaven or Hell or God or an afterlife is truly liberating.  I don't have to sit and wonder why I'm here or what it all means.  I don't have to wonder why there are so many different religions and which one is the right one.  Do your homework:  all of the religions are a direct descendant of Greek mythology.  We used to believe in multiple gods.  Each in charge of something we couldn't explain like lightning and thunder.  Then we got so lazy we rolled them all into one God that oddly enough was in our own image.  People believe in God because it's the easiest explanation.  One that can stand on it's own without proof.  One that can serve the purpose of explaining why we're here and where we came from.  Do you want to know what's hard?  Try admitting to a group of people that you are atheist.  Religion is so embedded in our society it makes for easy pickings for the elite waiting to take advantage of the poor and ignorant.  It takes great strength to stand for what you believe while surrounded by weak, scared servants.

Great. Now I can't stop thinking about how much better the Bible would have been if Jesus were a vampire-baby eating his way out of Mary's uterus.
