Sid Mirrafati, Doc Who Promoted 'Ready-To-Wear-Breasts,' Gets 'Public Reprimand' After Patient Dies of Lipo Complication

He's back here once again, this time for weightier matters (well, figuratively). Mirrafati, who runs Mira Aesthetic Medical Center & Day Spa in Costa Mesa, was issued a "public reprimand" by the Medical Board of California on Friday for failing to "maintain adequate and accurate medical records" in a 2008 liposuction procedure. Though the state board documents give scarier details . . .
First, Mirrafati has no verifiable training or experience that would make him eligible for American Board of Medical Specialist board certification or ABMS certification in any specialty that would give him the ability to handle liposuction surgery under general anesthesia, according to the accusation.
On July 29, 2008, Mirrafati performed liposuction surgery on a male patient for the removal of excess fat in his chest, abdominal, back and flank areas. He allowed a surgical assistant to prepare the patient for surgery and assist during the surgery, though the assistant was not certified as a medical assistant or surgical technician.
According to the accusation, Mirrafati did not properly document an adequate health history or physical examination of the patient, and during the perioperative period, there was no documentation of fluid input or output.
While the patient was in the recovery room, Mirrafati was called from his office because the patient was nonresponsive. Intubation and CPR measures were undertaken and 911 was called. The next day, the patient was pronounced brain dead. A subsequent autopsy revealed the cause of death to be a pontocerebral fat embolism as a complication of liposuction.
In addition to being issued a public reprimand, Murrafati must enroll in a course in medical record keeping.
A slap on the wrist, perhaps?
