I'm willing to accept her explanation.  Let's think about this a moment, and try to leave our mindreading out of this (and there seem to be a lot of people who think they can do this here - if you're so good, I'm thinking of a number between 1 and 1000, what is it?). She is clearly aware that Obama's mother is white, yet the mother in this group portrait is also a chimpanzee. So if we are to take this literally, she is saying "blacks and whites are apes" (which incidently, we all are) and she either accepts that fact without distress, or she hates blacks and whites equally, including herself, which is unfortunate for her, but it isn't rascism, it's known as misanthropy.  Also, as another commentor wrote, it's easy to find hundreds, thousands of pictures representing Bush as a chimp, just by Googling "bush + chimp" (I myself portrayed Bush asa chimp, and am absolutely unrepentant:  http://soundclick.com/share.cf.... While it is certainly true that Bush looks a lot more like a chimp than Obama does (just as he looks a lot more like Alfred E Newman than Obama does) it is not evidence of racism towards Bush to portray him as a chimp.  It is a sign of disrespect. If anybody is saying that Obama doesn't deserve disrespect, I can give you about 10,000 reasons why he deserves as much disrespect as Bush got, for almost all of the same reasons.  I'm when I see disrespect shown towards Obama in exactly the same way it was shown towards Bush - it suggests we are making progress towards Dr. King's goal; people being judged on the content of their character, not the color of their skin. If I were a mind reader (like y'all) I'd be pretty certain Dr. King would not respect Obama's (lack of) character very much. But of course I'm not.

I'm glad to see GOP officials take notice of this, and I hope she either resigns or is relieved of leadership. Nonetheless, what disturbs me is her easy claims to innocence, the very heart and soul of narcissism. It's one thing to be hateful; but blindness to it is another, and, frankly, it's a more serious moral problem - narcissistic innocence is the root of profound evil.
