[UPDATE: Protests Continue] Students Walk Out of Valley High School in Santa Ana to Protest Firing of Principal

• The Principals are the ones OVERALL responsible for school scores. It is not taking away from the teachers and students. But it was TEST scores that went up. So I have to ask, why were they low to begin with? Giving stuents 50% credit for writing there name doesn't make API scores go up.

• We're these the same teachers that scored lower the 2 previous years??

• The purpose of a walk out is to draw attention. It is unfortunate that it had to "disturb" the learning of other students for a day or 2 but if the students feel this passionate about it then good for them.

She told a retiring teacher that she would go back and change his "unfair" grades

• The kids walked out because it was a free days away from school. They might be sad because now they will have a principal who will try to hold them accountable. Also God Forbid try to institute some rules. Swerdlow was horrible and wanted to baby all the kids "The poor children." The woman took positive behavior to an extreme, and wasn't with it! A kid throws a punch? Give him a hug. "How dare those teachers fail these children?" She was hated by an overwhelming majority of the staff for her condescending, patronizing attitude, and the way she treated the people who worked for her. She did have Yes Men. Do the readers here know some of the egregious things that have happened at Valley High under her leadership? They would make you wince. No one would not want that for their child. The school needs strong leadership, rules and discipline and kids to be held accountable. The Staff needs to work as a team, and not their own individual best situations (like it has been)

• Hi Im a Freshman Falcon at Valley High School. I didn't have a big chance to get to know Mrs. Swerdlow but it seemed to me that she was a very nice lady and I heared that she made big chances in school. She was the one who told me and guide me on how to do good on this years, next year, and all the years that I am going to be in Valley High School and not only for High School but to also be succesfull in college. Last year I attended to Carr Intermediate School for all three years of intermediate school therefore, Mr. Patrick was my principal. In my opinion, he wasn't a bad principal, it's just that he was and is strict which is what students don't like. We could't use cellphones in school, we had to walk in certain hallways depending on where and which way we were going, we had bring 2'' binders to school everyday, bring agendas everyday, etc. etc., etc., he was making sure that everyone in school could follow this rules which students didn't like but I can understand the reasons of this rules. However, there a couple of rules and chances that students didn't like and on which I agree. For example, in Carr there's a rule introduced by him which stated that students couldn't be in a group with more than five students on the same place because it would be consider was a gang. Furthermore, years before, Carr was offering more classes before and after school. Classes like art, drawing, and others which where removed due that the principal and teachers where sayinf that students where paying more attention to those classes than the actual important classes like Math, English, Social Studies, and others. In my opinion, they should have leave this classes for students. If students where paying attention to those classes I don't see a reason why they will take them out when this classes could help them in the future. As for the protest in Valley, I didn't went to this protest. Many of the students who were marching in this protest... I don't think that they even mind about of Mrs. Swerdlow comes back or not, they just didn't want to go to class. As for the students who were marching because they DO mind, I'm very proud that they did so, that they tryed to express their opinion and to show that they do care about Mrs. Swerdlow. However, I think that "Walking out" is not a good idea beause they are also interrupting students that like me, they stayed at class to learn and to move foward so that they could build a "Big bright tomorrow". The students who went to talk to the district... I really respect you because it was a good and the right idea! :) Thank you for reading my post! • As much as you would like to know, the reality is that the Board and district administration cannot legally inform anyone as to why someone was released, asked to resign, or pushed to resign. I am sorry that you have lost your beloved principal...but you must be heard through different avenues. Watching and reading about students walking out at Valley only feeds the stereotype that people have about Valley High. Protesting during class time only hurts the students. Find ways to make your voices heard, but not at the expense of your graduation.

Mrs. Swerdlow did absolutely nothing to promote academics except asking teachers to pass more kids, let students turn in work late, and GIVE 50% FOR STUDENTS WHO DID NOTHING OTHER THAN WRITE THEIR NAME ON A TEST. I SWEAR! GIVE THEM 50% FOR A ZERO!!!! All the new task forces teachers were forced to join just took time away from actually doing the work of a teacher. None of the task forces had anything to do with systematically improving instruction. Yes, she did a good job making more kids prepared to be car mechanics or teeth cleaners, but scholars? No.

Because the API scores have increased under her supervision (not because of her, under her supervision) then that alone can spark debate between the students, faculty, and the district. I was replying to someone who was insisting that the students (with low or high test scores) are not entitled to protest against something that obviously affects them as well. I’m actually not taking any side since no one but the school board knows why she was fired.

• It is interesting to note that none of the articulate students, and I assume there have to be a few, who can spell correctly and formulate an argument with sound logic, concrete details, and commentary have appeared on this forum in support of either principal. Perhaps they are the ones who stayed in class and are preparing for college.

• So a few hundred kids got on the news, big deal. No one mentions that nearly a couple thousand kids stayed in class and had their education interrupted by the protestors who pounded on doors, screamed, threw things, trashed the campus, and disrupted instruction. What these students did not learn is that they are not the center of the universe and that they did not have the right to interrupt other students' education. They still would have got on the news if they had their protest after school. The journalists, who love to denigrate Valley, would have still appeared. They also could have had their protest at the district office during the board meeting where the people with power were. Nobody at Valley had any power to fire Mrs. Swerdlow or rehire Mrs. Swerdlow. She left of her own accord because she did some things that she should not have done. I encourage her supporters to keep pushing this issue. If the truth comes out of what she did to lose her job, and it will one day, all of Swerdlow's pets will put their tail between their legs for shame. Swerdlow is blaming the loss of her job on a few teachers. As usual, she takes no blame for her bad actions, but she doesn't hesitate to take the credit for the work of others. And trust me, the opinions of a few teachers could not get a really good principal fired.

• Please, people, let the truth out. Stop citing raised test scores as a reason for keeping Mrs. Swerdlow. Those test scores, honestly, had nothing to do with her. If she was responsible for raised scores then you would see a more normal distribution of improved scores throughout the school. By the way, those teachers with improved test scores? I don't hear them defending her.

• These students are hacks of Long Beach resident Chris Prevatt and convicted speeder Alfredo Amezcua. They are making the most wonderful school district in the entire world look bad. They are clearly being paid money to give the school district a bad name. I would never ever take money and sell my beliefs, but these students have.

• I meant ... the same teachers who made improvements last year will make improvements again this year, and the same teachers who didn't make improvements last year will still not make improvements this year. All of the "improvements" that she made had nothing to do with instruction.

• The improved scores were not a result of Mrs. Swerdlow. People need to know how hard the teachers who made improvements in scores had to fight against some of the things Mrs. Swerdlow wanted them to do. The scores went up in spite of her. Watch the scores for this year. The same teachers who made improvements last year, and the same teachers who didn't make improvements last year will still not make improvements this year.

• If the students cared about their eduction, they would do their homework, study hard, raise their grades, and participate in school activities (other than protests). The API scores were raised by a small group of teachers and students. The increased scores were not schoolwide, not by a long shot. The scores are public records. You can look them up and see what section made improvements, and the many many many sections that made no improvements at all or that actually decreased.

• I these kids really cared about their education, as they said they did yesterday during the protest, then why don't they do homework, study hard, raise their grades, and improve standardized test scores? They just wanted a day off from school. Most of the students could barely articulate why they walked out. They did it because they wanted out of class.

• Valley has properly maintained facilities and was awarded a multi-million dollar grant. These students are not fighting for a school with proper facilities and for more funding.

• No, she really did not have any part in the scores improving at Valley. Please look up where the gains were made. These are public records. One group made the gains. Not the whole school. This group made gains by going behind Swerdlow's back in order to implement instructional changes that she did not want made. Also, scores started improving, due to teachers, before Swerdlow came to Valley.

• You are correct. She absolutely babied students, which is why they loved her. The increase in scores at Valley were made by a very small population of Valley teachers who did it in spite of her. These teachers were told to put their time into planning activities instead of instruction. One teacher who had high gains was threatened with removal from her position because she was spending too much time on instruction and not on planning activities for the students (is a teacher of low-performing student's first priority planning fun activities?). Mrs. Swerdlow wanted to move this teacher to another grade so she would not prevent, by her attention to instruction, efforts to plan pool parties. Also, when the 9th grade DOUBLED the proficiency scores from the year before, Mrs. Swerdlow barely said a word to the teachers about it. She knew that she did not believe the teachers could do it. She just wanted 9th grade kids to have activities so they would want to come to school, but she did not believe they could actually learn anything. Achievement gains were in spite of Mrs. Swerdlow, not because of Mrs. Swerdlow. If the gains were attributable to her, then they would have been schoolwide - not concentrated in one area.

• The only one who gave the excuse that her drive was too long was Mrs. Swerdlow. Those were her words. Are you saying you want a principal who lies, then? Or who is pressured into saying things that are untrue? She resigned. She was not fired.

• When Tony Espinosa was fired as Valley's principal in November 2006, top administrators knew about his sexual peccadillos but rather then fire him outright, they let him lose on female students at Segerstrom. Gomez-Trejo replaced Espinosa and again despite the fact that Gomez-Trejo had been fired as vice principal and principal from three high schools in the South Bay and despite the fact that SAUSD was told about his firings, they made him principal of Valley anyway. When Gomez-Trejo was fired from Valley, top SAUSD administrators asked Carr principal Patrick D. Yrarrazaval-Correa (Mr. Patrick) to take the reins at Valley. He refused. Since Patrick is now the principal of Valley after the firing of Swerdlow, I suspect Patrick will remain at Valley only until a new principal is hired. The person behind all the hirings and firings at Valley is Juan Lopez, Associate Superintendent for Human Resources. He was Gomez-Trejos mentor. Patrick has been the subject of numerous law suits by teachers and staff over the years. One last point, Mr. Patrick and Tony Espinosa are bosom buddies.

• What did I get wrong?

• Honestly, most of the students walked out because they did not want to be in class. Half of them didn't know it was going on until the students walking out were being disruptive on their way out. After only two days of having Mr. Patrick as the principal, they acted as if the new principal had actually done ANYTHING to change the school as it is now. As of right now, everything remains the same. They're just not giving him a chance. While they have a right to protest the sudden change in administration, what they did will not change the outcome of the situation. Food fights in the quad? Throwing water bottles at police cars? Are those the actions of a peaceful demonstration? No. Rather, they're the acts of children being denied what they wanted: to ditch school. Many students spoke of Mrs. Swerdlow's compassion for students. I would argue that if Mrs. Swerdlow truly cared about the students, she would have made a statement to the school before leaving to inform students about the coming change and to offer up closure to the student body. Of course, students loved Mrs. Swerdlow because she DID care about the students and babied them, yet she did nothing about students who were real issues/problems on campus. The students who "don't like" Mr. Patrick, were probably discipline issues at his previous schools where he handled them with firmness. Also, the increase in API score is over attributed to her leadership ability. The credit should really go to the students and their teachers who worked hard DESPITE her leadership "skills." Did she make some positive changes in the school? Yes, of course. But to give her all the credit is an insult to the hardworking staff and students on campus.
