Dana Rohrabacher: It's Barack Obama, Stupid!

Dana: Let's sabotage the USA for next 18 months!
According to Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, the Republican Party's "primary goal" for the next 1.5 years is not to reduce federal spending, pay down the ridiculous federal debt or cut taxes, the party's three chief public policy themes.

No, Rohrabacher is arguing that "getting America on the right path" has to be temporarily set aside to accomplish a higher calling: the defeat of President Barack Obama.

"Our primary goal in the next 18 months is to ensure that President Obama is not re-elected, and second to that is we win a Republican majority in the Senate," the Costa Mesa Republican wrote in a Monday comment on Red County.

Based on that strategy, the congressman--who skipped Vietnam War duty but constantly hails himself as a "patriot"--isn't motivated to help the economy improve while Obama is in the White House. This leads to an important question. Is sabotaging America--even for 18 months--patriotic?

Rohrabacher rationalizes his strategy by claiming that conservative principles can't be enacted "unless the American people reject Obama in the next election" and that the GOP must not allow a government shutdown because, he believes, that would guarantee Obama a second term in office.

According to Rohrabacher, the 1995 federal government shutdown was perceived by the public as a Republican-caused mess that ensured the re-election of President Bill Clinton

But Red County's Chip Hanlon, a longtime Orange County conservative activist, says Rohrabacher's spin is "a bummer."

"Those who cannot even correctly read the history of the 1995 shutdown are asking you to pardon them while they break your hearts again on spending for a couple more years--because they know best what's in our electoral interests," wrote Hanlon, who says it's a "myth" that the 1995 shutdown damaged Republicans.

Hanlon cites THIS article by Erick Erickson as proof of the myth.

Still, Rohrabacher won't budge. Not surprisingly, he's belligerent. He dismissed Hanlon as a "heartbroken blogger."

The next threat of a federal government shutdown is Friday.

Rohrabacher is a poor excuse for a Congressman. I pity his district

Because I am in the process of setting up a business in OC I have been reading a few local papers and blogs online, like this one. This writier -- Moxley -- is very interesting. His hatred of Rohrabacher is really pathological and probably clinical. He cannot write anything about him without going through his litany of of issues like, for instance, he didn't go to Vietnam but "...hails himself as a patriot." Over and over ad naseum Moxley makes this point. What does this have to do with political strategy? Anyway, being a partiot is like believing in God; only you know what's in your heart. Its sad that people like him are given a platform to make his petty attacks on people like Rohrabacher who have earned their platform, year after year. Jeez.

Let me translate Dana's point-

If you want a vision of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face - forever.

-This is what they want.

Our system of government works the best when there is a balance between the parties in control. An all Republican controlled Federal government would be as a big disaster as the all Democratic controlled Federal government we had untill the mid term elections.

The focus has to be puting AMERICANS back to work. nothing else matters much.

Making America a permanently Republican controlled power is always their goal. At least give Dana credit for coming out and saying it... somewhat. They run on their budget / spending / taxes agenda, but do things like weaken unions, because unions typically support Democrats in elections.

People forget. We HAD a Republican majority in both houses and the WH for 6 years, and the Republicans INCREASED spending while reducing taxes on the rich. They always run on this fiscally conservative platform, but have NEVER governed that way. The only reason they're trumpeting it now is because there's a Dem in the WH.

if the government shuts down it will be because of the republicans and I for one hope it does shut down because the Repuks are asking for way to many cuts in all the wrong places.

I think his point in bringing up his non-Vietnam service is that he believes Dana is self-serving while claiming he's in service to his country. Republicans SAY that they want to close the budget gap, while their actions are all about increasing their control over this country.

I'm agreeing with your statement about the government working best when there is balance. I'm going to disagree with you about the comparison between an all-Republican and all-Democratic federal government.

Republicans did have control of all 3 branches from 2000 to 2006. The Dems had 2 branches from 2008 - 2010. Remember that the SCOTUS is Republican majority, so we get decisions like the one that allows businesses to donate a virtually unlimited amount to politcal campaigns. The traditional counterbalance to the power of big business, labor unions, are under attack and being weakened. That's how the GOP goes about marginalizing the Democratic party.
