Why Are People Surprised Orange County Has Anti-Muslim Loons?

deborah-pauly.JPG
Pauly: Pendeja
Color me jaded, cynical, or wayyyyy too in to be able to see from the outside, but I'm shocked that the anti-Muslim* rally that happened last week in Yorba Linda has made the national news. Write-ups in Salon, Good, and other national publications? Really?

Sure, part of it is that the Council on American Islamic Relations released a pretty damning video capturing lunatics like Villa Park councilwoman Deborah "Sodomy" Pauly and congressmen Ed Royce and Gary Miller railing against Muslims--but if the national media thinks this is something unprecedented in the annals of Orange County, it's laughably wrong as it almost always is about Orange County.

OC Anti-Muslim roll call!

Orange County...

*is the place where the Republican Party turned against one of its own, Bill Dalati, when he ran for a seat on the Anaheim City Council just because he's pro-Palestinian and associates with CAIR (which the local GOP never seemed to have a problem with back when Mike Carona was doing it). Disgusted, Dalati is now a Democrat, and the Republicans turned off another group of brown voters.

*is where Republicans launched whisper campaigns against Todd Gallinger when he ran for Irvine City Council in 2008. There are many reasons to loathe Gallinger, who is a Larry Agran apologist and was the lawyer who made Orange Juice! blogger Art Pedroza run to the grasps of SanTana Mayor Don Papi Pulido--but his work for CAIR or his status as a Muslim ain't one of them.

*is where a guy like Tim Bueler--who, as a high school student came to Orange County and said he wished to kill Muslims for a living--can get a job with the Minuteman Project, which enjoyed Republican support for far too long.

*is where the California Coalition for Immigration Reform spews anti-Muslim rhetoric when they're not trashing Mexicans or gays--yet Republican politicians or their representatives show up for their blessings.

I could go on, but it's far too pretty a day to list every anti-Muslim incident O.C. has suffered over the years. Throw in the fact that most Orange Countians know next-to-nothing about local Muslim life besides the UCI Muslim Student Union, that Goat Boy got radicalized here, and that mosques have sprung up across OC in the past decade, and that we've never liked swarthy newcomers--and, honestly, what's the big deal with the Yorba Linda rally? The only reason any of us should be surprised is that it doesn't happen more often--and let's hope it doesn't.

*Yes, lunatics: anti-Muslim. The people who organized the fundraiser should've known better than to invite a bona fide loser like Amir Abdel Malik Ali as a keynote speaker--but, your side being your side, you couldn't resist just shitting on Islam in general instead of pointedly criticizing Malik Ali. Gracias for reminding the country how crazy and retrograde we truly are!

The number of Muslim at the Irvine Spectrum and at Fashion Island is awful. Imagine people who are avowed to wipe us of the face of the earth because the US is Satan, and believe we are infidels are trolling all over these two malls in face masks and head wraps

Speak for yourself, Gustavo!!!  Retrograde you are!  Don't be generalizing, you fool!  We, the People, are sick and tired of you sympathizers of hateful, religious, radicals like those who listen to Malik.  You enjoy posting photos of people who you talk about?  Why don't you post your photos on your articles so we know who you are.  Don't hide behind anonimity.  Be brave, senor!  Stop kissing the terrorists' behind thinking that it is the "cool" thing to do because I can guarantee that in the Middle East, you would have already lost your head.

Speaking of "loons":

"the Messenger of Allah . . . would say: 'Fight in the name of Allah and in the way of Allah. Fight against those who disbelieve in Allah. Make a holy war. . . . When you meet your enemies who are polytheists, invite them to three courses of action. . . . Invite them to (accept) Islam; if they respond to you, accept it from them and desist from fighting against them. . . . If they refuse to accept Islam, demand from them the Jizya. If they agree to pay, accept it from them and hold off your hands. If they refuse to pay the tax, seek Allah's help and fight them . . .'" (Muslim Book 19, Number 4294).

"fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war) . . . " (Qur’an 9:5).

"Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued" (Qur'an 9:29).

"The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger, and strive with might and main for mischief through the land is: execution, or crucifixion, or the cutting off of hands and feet from opposite sides, or exile from the land: that is their disgrace in this world, and a heavy punishment is theirs in the Hereafter . . . " (Qur'an 5:33).Ibn Kathir says of this verse: "'Wage war' mentioned here means, oppose and contradict, and it includes disbelief, blocking roads and spreading fear in the fairways. Mischief in the land refers to various types of evil." So, Muhammad requires execution, crucifixion, or cutting off hands and feet from opposite sides for "disbelief.""Allah's Apostle said: 'I have been ordered (by Allah) to fight against the people until they testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is Allah's Apostle [. . .] if they perform that, then they save their lives and property from me . . . '" (Bukhari Volume 1, Book 2, Number 24).

"It is not for any prophet to have captives until he hath made slaughter in the land. Ye desire the lure of this world and Allah desireth (for you) the Hereafter, and Allah is Mighty, Wise" (Qur'an 8:67).

"Allah’s Apostle said, '. . . I have been made victorious with terror . . .'" (Bukhari Volume 4, Book 52, Number 220).

Lt. Rodgers,

Your allegations about myself and the Council on American Islamic Relations are disturbing. CAIR has never been labeled as a terrorist organization by Congress, the FBI, the State Department, the Treasury Department of any other state or federal agency. Allegations have been made by radical and ill-informed congress people and there are many "experts" who make a living off of scaring the public about Muslims.

When questioned about it during my campaign, I responded that I absolutely condemn Hamas, Hezbollah, and any group which attacks civilians. The Qur'an states that to take one life is the same as killing all of humanity. Any group that violates this is not Islamic in my book.

As for my work with CAIR, I have represented their California Chapter, but have never worked closely with the national office. My primary work with CAIR (that came under fire by your running mate Dr. Steven Choi) was the filing of two class-action lawsuits with the ACLU & Asian Law Caucus due to delays in the background check process for some applicants for citizenship. As a result of these cases, and similar ones filed across the country, the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security increased funding and resources for the background check office of the FBI performing these "name checks". As a result, many fewer cases are delayed presently and we can more quickly identify any security threats who may be residing here in the country.

Believe me sir, I "wannabe" exactly what I am. I've worked hard to help the local community, and not just the Muslim community, but literally dozens of non-profits and community leaders. I've also worked hard in the political arena, resulting in my higher vote total in the 2008 Irvine City Council elections.

Please give up your bitterness and stop with the false accusations.

The real issue is the 20 billion we send to Israel every year. Both speakers are African american and have repeatedly urged that instead of sending the money to Isreal that free aid money would be better spent in their neighborhoods in Harlem and Oakland.

The whole trip about Sharia and Muslims is a sham to suppress opposition to sending money which we dont have to Israel. In my opinion we should not be sending any money overseas until we solve our budget and economy issues.

This was in my town, Yorba Linda. Seeing what transpired made me question who those people were that were shouting and screaming profane language, while those small children sobbed. Could these really be my neighbors? The same ones who emailed me to join them at the "peaceful rally"? Mob mentality, shameful actions.

Why would any conservative, or any rational thinking person, stoop down to Gustavo's level and comment on this or any blog article that uses hateful terms such as "Deborah "So++my" Pauly?

I refuse to comment on blog articles that use the term "Tea++ggers" (like those by Dan C). I feel it is equally useless to comment on vile disgusting articles such as this by Gustavo.

They (the media) want people all around thinking the anti muslim sentiment around the country is really heating up.... so they over play an incident in orange county to feed the frezny.

You're hilarious and you're right. Sadly, I think middle to upper-class brown orange countians can forget at times the layers of the OC. Its only when you venture outside that you notice, oh hey, no one is staring at me... Why aren't they staring at me?

It's amusing this article ever got published and pathetic. Between the lines, you're still bashing on the rights of Muslim Americans. This country is living off of the oil fields in the Middle East which are giving the stuck up OC people their joys of riding in their high class cars. Many of these wars would never have begun if the U.S. didn't try to be the Hero and involve themselves into every war. Don't get me wrong, I am a damn proud U.S. citizen. I am dating a war veteran of two years but I don't respect any form intolerance. The O.C. council and protestors should be ashamed of themselves.

Extremist cleric to lead White House protest calling for Muslims to ‘rise up and establish Islamic state in America’ By DAILY MAIL REPORTERLast updated at 3:27 PM on 20th February 2011

A hard-line Muslim cleric who sparked anger across the U.S. with his anti-American comments in a television interview this month is to hold a protest outside the White House.

British extremist Anjem Choudary – who once said ‘the flag of Islam will fly over the White House’ – has announced he will lead a demonstration calling on Muslims to establish the Sharia law across America.

Look, I like to give anybody the benefit of the doubt but if some Catholic priest came out and said similar things the Vatican would be screaming from the trees condemning his actions and he would likely be defrocked. Where is the outrage on the Muslim side? I like to believe that I'm fair to all but the more I hear and see the more skeptical I have become. I challenged Sulayman last week and he didn’t seem to want to spar. All he did was the usual call me a racist and play the victim card. If I'm ignorant then please educate me. But quit citing the usual excuses that it’s all because of the Jews and the evil Infidels… That dog don’t hunt! As I told you I have been to no less than 6 Middle eastern countries so I have a firm understanding of Islam. Last week I cited at least 7 incidences over the last year of atrocities carried out here in America where the perpetrator cited Sharia Law as the reasoning for their actions. And yes Christians do terrible things too but the church almost instantly separates itself from those whackos and condemns their actions absolutely. I’m not going to not ask the tough questions because they may make me “Appear” to be racist or as you say “Islamophobic”. There is an increased scrutiny on all Muslims because of the Radicals but at the same time until some influential Imam’s come out and vehemently separate themselves from the radicals and condemn the terrible acts of barbarism we will continue to ask the tough questions.

Additionally I am a firm believer that the American Media is also whipping the masses into a frenzy because it sells… and No not Fox news.

Time Published this cover story In July 2010 about the girl in Afghanistan being disfigured because she fled an abusive spouse.http://www.time.com/time/world...

One month Later Time published this cover story questioning “Is America Islamophobic “?http://www.time.com/time/natio...

So in one case Time shows a graphic depiction of the evil side of Islam that incites anger towards how Muslims treat women. Then month later they say we are terrible for feeling this way?

Apollo01

I can't help but wonder how supportive of the muslims the writer would be when she is forced to live by "Sharia Law" and is required to wear a burka on a daily basis lest she be punished with a beating or by an honor killing. The ignorance and deliberate denial of the left on the proliferation of muslims in America and what their ultimate goal is never ceases to astound me!

Wejomerv
Wejomerv

It must suck to try to organize a protest against radical Muslims these days. If the majority of people show up to stand up against the radical ideology of a guy who openly supports three groups the US State Department recognizes as terrorist organizations, CAIR will produce a video that shows a splinter group of the protesters who are bigots against moderate Muslims.*

CAIR will not mention that most of the people at the event were protesting the keynote speakers, not against moderate Muslims. CAIR won’t even mention who the keynote speakers were of the event. Someone who watches the video without any other knowledge will believe the entire protest was a group of hateful bigots against moderate Muslims.

Does CAIR approve of keynote speaker to the event Malik Ali’s political views? Malik Ali is repeatedly invited by Muslim groups at local colleges to spread his Jewish conspiracy stories that Zionist Jews were responsible for 911 and for the Danish cartoon controversy and his confirm his support for Hezbollah (responsible for killing 220 US Marines), Hamas (charter calls for the destruction of Israel) , and Islamic Jihad (responsible for many suicide bombings).

*I condemn the people in the video who were hateful bigots against moderate Muslims. There is no justification for chants of things like “Go back home.” I have no problem with CAIR shining the light on them. I wish CAIR would also shine the light on Malik Ali and the speeches he gives at local colleges.

Some people (i.e. Republicans) are used to bashing or hating someone in America, this is the all what they know. If it is not African Americans, it would be Mexicans or Muslims. I am sure they will turn against the Jewish Americans one of these days. Shame on them for all the hate and false stories they spread, they are anything but Christians.

Why Are People Surprised Orange County Has Anti-Muslim Loons?WTFit is not just Orange County CA but the whole nation that does not trust Muslims and can you really blame us?2001 WTC 1, 2 and 7. 1999 US Canadian border a Muslim tired to bring a dirty bomb into the US you no so we could have some really bitching fireworks New Years 2000. 1994 Muslims set off a large bomb in the sub level parking of the WTC in hopes of bringing the two towers down. that is just and the list is pretty freaking long when it comes to Muslims every Muslim in the US should be looked at as a potential suicide bomber.

Yeah Dwayne in a sense your right but this isnt like we're Alabama ultra-conservatives... We are supposed to be better educated and a more diverse. As you can read above I have been a critic of both side I as I said the Muslim Clerics and Imams have a lot of explaining to do... I think if this happened in Fontana or Victorville it would have been a non story but Yorba Linda has the 5th highest median income in the county which is adjacent to Anahiem Hills which has the 2nd highest median in the county. And Brea which is on the otherside and actually provides the police for Yorba Linda is 26th in Median income and its listed at 70k a year... Why am I bringing this up? Most uneducated people dont make 70K a year.

Amedeohenry

Good point 909Jeff. I think that the animus isn't towards Muslims because they are new and different. I don't see the same animus towards Indian Hindu or Sikh immigrants. The animus is towards what now passes as 'mainstream' Islam in the Islamic world. It is overlaid with a primitive and supremacist legal structure that oppresses women (yes, hijab is oppressive to women who are forced to be partly or entirely invisible to everyone but their husband because rampant sex would occur otherwise), homosexuals, free thinkers (even 'moderate Malaysia largely prohibits deconversion from Islam) and atheists. Nicolas Kristoff had a great piece discussing this in yesterdays NY Times. Islam could change, just like mainstream Christianity and Judaism evolved. But the current form of Islam followed by most immigrants is the retrograde version. Covering women isn't acceptable in our society, and seeing burqas at the Irvine Spectrum should makes us all feel uncomfortable. The rantings of Imams against gays should makes us queezy, but instead we on left make excuses for this. For example, we latch on the tiny tiny minority of Islamic thinkers that aren't homophobic and say, "see, nothing to change here, Reza Aslan is for gay rights!".

I'm taking about practicing Muslims - Salafis, Shi'i and Sunni, not DJ Ali and his crew in Westwood. So Cal has been blessed with a large but secular Persian community. But now, we are seeing an influx of non-secular religious Arabs and Pakistanis who have no intention of integrating. They want their daughters in sexist hijab, they want their sons to only marry women from back home. "Dad, I'm gay", "Son, your moving back to Riyadh". These attitudes are indeed dispositional to the type of Islam they practice, and it will takes decades, if not longer for the central tenets of there type(s) of Islam to evolve.

This isn't working in Europe, in fact the hard-right is now burgeoning everywhere as a reaction, and this will probably be the same response here.

I wish I could say the same... I am a transplant from the OC to the 909. I am white and my Mom married a black guy when I was four they are still married and really he is the only father I know. So I was regularly called a traitor and a ni**er lover you know all of the charming things that the yokels like to call people of color. Even people who were my so called friends balked when I started dating a Latina. A guy who lived accros the street from me who was a freind for 10+ years bluntly asked me why cant I date any white girls? Maybe because vanilla just aint my flavor! So thats really why I get so aggrevated when people cry racism at the drop of a hat.

I agree gustavoarellano. Your point is well taken. It is important to point out practices of certain ideological groups that are not consonant with our ideals. We should not be tolerant of intolerance in Islam or elsewhere. However, we also need to be aware that some merely want to hate Muslims regardless of any particular beliefs. These people are just as dangerous as those they protested against.

909Jeff
909Jeff

In all honesty nothing, I can’t defend the juvenile way people chose to protest. And, frankly if it were up to me I'd tell them to go find something better to do with their time. My only beef really is when there are serious questions that need to be answered and the racist card comes out. Or the victim card get played. There is certainly enough blame to go around for the state of affairs we are currently in. So while I did address you specifically I suppose my response was in fact to all of the respondents who are playing the blame game. But you have to be happy at the amount of response this article got!

Gustavo seems like a fair minded guy. He was aware that it is o.k. to criticize Islamic groups and ideas, but wrong to go as far as just hating people who are Muslim.
