Orange Unified School District Finally Honoring Lorenzo Ramirez, Local Desegregation Icon

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for lorenzoramirez.jpg
Tonight, the Orange Unified School District is taking an extraordinary step, one anathema to the Orange County mind: admitting that our discriminatory present past was wrong and honoring those brave souls who fought those wrongs only to get disappeared by local historians.

The person in question is Lorenzo Ramirez, who sued the then-El Modeno School District (now part of Orange Unified) as part of the landmark Mendez, et al. v. Westminster, et al. case in the 1940s for denying his children the right to attend an integrated school. Ramirez's story became a footnote even in Orange County, where nearly all the attention has been put on the Mendez family at the expense of the other four families who sued school districts--but Orange Unified is taking baby steps to right that wrong.

The conservative board is issuing a proclamation honoring Lorenzo; his wife, Josefina (who's still feisty even in her 90s); and their children for fighting for "educational equity for all of our nation's children." The proclamation gives a brief summary of Ramirez's life and cites it as an "inspiration to students, parents, educators and other community members" because the Ramirezes stood "up for American ideals" and gave a "significant and lasting contribution to the quality of education in Orange, California, and across the nation," one "deserv[ing of] our gratitude." Kudos to the board for referring to the case by its proper name instead of the shorthand that has unfortunately taken hold in popular discourse.

The Ramirez family will be in attendance tonight, along with supporters. And rumor has it that the board is at least considering renaming a school after Lorenzo. And so our Sunkist memories finally fade into the past . . .

well, Lorenzo Ramirez is my grandfather and I am proud of what he did. Some people will agree and others won't, everyone is intitled to their opinion. That is the best right that we americans have and share.

Thanks for enlightening us to exactly when and how the decline of the California educational system began.

"let there never be progress originated by a wab, i guess."

What the hell does that even mean.

But look at yourselves. When was the last time a Mexican invented anything -- 5000 years ago when maize was domesticated? 'Progress' is not the first (or second or third or 39th) think one associates with Mexicans or Mexico.

Like Cheech Marin sang -- Mexican-Americans, go to summer school, and take Spanish, and get a 'B'.

Hey, everyone: don't worry about Mitchell. He's just pissed his kind—the racist, dipshit, loser White who's aghast at the prospect his grandkids will be half-Mexican—is becoming the minority in OC. Later, hater!

Why is everyone feeding the troll? Yes, I'm referring you Mitchell. When I publish my first book, I'll dedicate it to you. The dedication shall read, "Mitchell, you're still a douchebag."

I hate to use an anecdotal argument, but integration of second generation migrant populations can happen quite seamlessly. If one were to look at my family, this would be rather obvious. Even within the relatively short time we've been residents of Orange county we've ascended through academia. There are lawyers, principals, civil engineers, etc in our family. Our ideas and actions define us, not our ethnic background. I realize that my family is atypical. The modern chicano can embrace the past and present and create a model that works. At least that is the reality that I can see with my two eyes. Call me an optimist.

Your conceptualization of race and culture is intrinsically flawed. Your scope of humanity is rather limited, and I hope for the sake of the nation's children the future does not rest on your shoulders.

I seriously doubt my grandkids will live in Orange County.

And the rage I see here is from a people whose vocabulary seems to be very limited: 'racist', dipshit, loser, douche. And what the hell does this even mean:'let there never be progress originated by a wab, i guess.'

Seriously guys, you should be able to do better than that. 'Hateraid' would be funny, but its pretty unoriginal -- I think I saw it first five years ago or so. If you feel the need to vent in 'Spanish' , go right ahead -- perhaps its the language barrier interfering with your rapier-like wits.

Quite frankly me and mine will do okay even in a 'Latino' dominated society, should we choose to stay. Maybe even better -- look at the richest man in the world -- 'Carlos Slim' -- not one drop of Mestizo blood in that guy, yet he dominates a nation of 100 million +.

Mitchell: You're the typical skin who blames the problem of your "people" on everyone but yourself. Do us all a favor and go back to your Stormfool home. On second thought, stick around and amuse us with your infantile logic, and keep boosting our web numbers--we love it!

Great, sendme a copy!

"There are lawyers, principals, civil engineers, etc in our family. Our ideas and actions define us, not our ethnic background. I realize that my family is atypical."

And that is the rub, your family is very atypical. Atypical in that you disavow ethnic identity -- seems to me most educated 'Chicanos' (didn't know they still used that word) are more like the ethnoracial activist that is this blog's author. Atypical in achievement. Let's take one state -- teen birth rate. In 2008 it was 66 per 1000 for 'Latinas' in California, 15.4 per 100 for Anglos. (You can look this up at the CDC website) That is, 4 something times the white rate. I think everyone is agreed that 'teen birth ' isn't a good thing in an advanced industrial economy -- except for maybe 'Latino' politicians. It leads to low skilled mothers, and low skilled children. So by replacing whites with Mexicans, California has essentially damaged its future as a whole -- not to mention what has been done to whites in this state. Similar exercises can be played with incarceration rates, drop out rates, etc.

Not of course that people like Arellano care -- they (you) are the demographic winners. And when California becomes Santa Ana writ large, they will just follow the whites to Idaho (or whereever).
