The King's Speech Muted PG-13 Version Comes to OC

Categories: Film
Because of one brief scene in which the word "fuck" is repeatedly rattled off like bullets coming out of a machine gun, the Academy Award-winning film The King's Speech earned an R rating from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).

That was a shame, many parents who caught the flick thought, because the struggles Oscar winner Colin Firth's character goes through would provide a valuable lesson to children, especially those with speech impediments.

Well, movie magic took care of all that.

Thanks to the Weinstein Co. getting quick approval of a new PG-13 cut of the film from the MPAA, that version opens in theaters Friday around the country, including the Edwards University  in Irvine. The revised flick turns the sound down as the f-bombs fall.

Not everyone is happy with this. CinemaBlend's Josh Tyler is talking about boycotting the new cut. "It is a big deal," he blogs, "an act of censorship sure to have far-reaching consequences for all sorts of moviegoers."

It'll be interesting to see how many heed his call and deliver the new King's Speech a rousing "f-f-f-f-f-f-fuck you!"

What kind of idiot is this Tyler? It's not censorship if you do it to yourself...for commercial purposes. It's just a business decision...and in my opinion a smart one, in this instance.

Josh Tyler is just fishing for attention, and him and his ilk suffer from a major misunderstanding of what censorship actually is. Censorship is suppression of objectionable material by some kind of group in power whether it is goverment/media group/etc. The 'R' rated version is not being suppressed at all, there is just an alternative being offered. No one is holding the 'F' words back if you want to see/hear them.

Yes, film is an art form, but is is also a consumable product. I've been a long time huge fan of movie companies releasing multiple versions of films for those of us who don't want to see/hear certain objectionable material. IT ISN'T censorship if the objectionable material is just as available if you want it... I think it would probably end up making more money for the film, because you are opening the film to different groups of people, those who enjoy the objectionable material, and those who don't.

If this was the case, the 'far-reaching consequences' Mr Tyler refers to may end up being more money flow in an already struggling movie industry, and thereby result in MORE movies for Mr Tyler to watch. They can even make more 'R' rated versions of 'PG13' movies so Mr Tyler and get all the blood/sex/profanity his heart desires.
