End Days Alert: Radioactive Plume to Reach OC From Japan Late Friday

Here's the bad news: a United Nations forecast says that a so-called "plume" of radiation from Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant will reach Southern California by late Friday after blowing across the Pacific Ocean via the Aleutian Islands. The plume is then expected to continue its eastward journey to Nevada, Arizona and Utah. The predicted course ends there because the UN didn't chart the plume any farther than the Southwestern United States.

The good news: Because the lethal cloud of radioactive material has to travel thousands of miles to reach California, it'll be so diluted that the health consequences are expected to be "minor."
Okay, so now for the news that kind of undermines the good news.

First of all, the UN report makes no mention whatsoever of the actual levels of radiation that are currently being expelled from the crippled reactors in Japan, nor what those levels would be expected to be once they hit our shores.

Secondly, the report was issued on Tuesday, based on wind conditions and forecasts available on that day, with the caveat that everything is subject to change.

Thirdly, and most important, the UN never actually released its report to the public. Instead, The New York Times somehow got its hands on it.

So to sum up, thanks, United Nations, thank you very much, indeed, for either scaring the shit out of us for no good reason, or for providing a vastly understated advance warning of radioactive peril that, based on its headline alone, has the potential to cause widespread panic. With reports like this, no wonder folks are getting paranoid and stockpiling anti-radiation pills.

If you want some accurate information, try the website wunderground.com The Dr. provides a good amount of information updated everyday, with trajectory maps included, that span over three days..which he updates every day. My husband is quite high up with a nuclear facility, and he says we are fine here, so far....thanks to the many miles of the Pacific Ocean. Japan has misled and lied about several things, but we are there now and monitoring things ourselves (USA). It has become very apparent to authorities that they are going to have to stop trying to put out a forest fire with a squirt gun and start a "Chernobyl solution"...pouring tons of sand and cement.... entombing all of the reactors. This is information from the "big guys" in the US. Japan needs to get busy and stop sacrificing their loyal people and start with the process NOW.

thanks oc weekly and Nick Schou for reporting this. Its typical that the UN did not release this andn o one else is really reporting this either. Whether or not the effects will be "minor" or not it is still our right to be informed and know what is going on.

Is our government tracking the plum as it travels toward the west coast? If not, is that a real mistake or what? This issue should be in the minds of our government personnel. Who is responsible for this type of information. Should'nt we hear from them about where the plum is and where it is headed and when it will reach the west coast? Who cares about the level being decreased somehow, we still need to know where it is and how to deal with it.

Everyone just settle down - the so called plume is probably no more dangerous than having to inhale the effluvium that undocumented landscaping employees using leaf blowers generate in our communities *all* day *every* day in Southern California.

Okay lets just say We do get sick ar side effects, who would be blame for it? What are we supposed to do? Even by taking the Pills you would still get Side effects so the real question here is are we ready for this? Is it realy going to affect us? As much as we try to figure things out we can't be sure because of weather change wind change. So lets not get scared people to my understanding we will be find.

Hey Nick Are you fricken SURE? I would double check before you annouce an all clear alert, or better yet why don't you watch Dr. Strangelove again, you know a Mine Shaft Gap. And he is alittle reminder, in 1968 that the geologists said that California may sink into the ocean, Hey were still here, I do not think in what you wrote is right, also look at the photos in Japan at the airports they now have detectors to measure the radioactive anything ok..

Get your facts straight before you say BOO.

"Get your facts straight". What credible geologist ever made the claim that "California may sink into the ocean". You state that "the geologists", i.e., more than one, made the statement so can you find a quote from ANY geologist verifying that? I'll save you a little trouble, no geologist would ever make such an inane statement, it was just another urban myth of spectaculalry ignorant proportions. The main point I get out of Nick's article is the lack of hard data in the releases, a valid point.
