UPDATE, MARCH 10, 1:59 P.M.: A resident in the 1900 block of Monrovia Avenue, which is behind Continental Avenue in Costa Mesa, heard the commotion and saw the lights from a police helicopter shining the scene of today's bloody family dispute.

"I walked my dog early this morning and talked to one of the cops about the situation and saw the cop car and truck on the flatbeds," he reports. "The police car looked like an accordian, the truck like a burned-out shell."

ORIGINAL POST, MARCH 10, 12:35 P.M.: To believe the Costa Mesa police report, Donald Monroe Greene totally lost it early this morning.

The 49-year-old Costa Mesa resident is accused of getting into an argument with his sons, 17 and 28, striking the older boy in the head with a ceramic tile, yelling that he wanted to hurt himself, arming himself with a handgun and firing off a round in his garage.

All of that was before Greene allegedly tried to end his life, his sons' and police officers' by plowing his Toyota pickup head on into a patrol car

Just after midnight today, police received a call from a woman who said her husband had hit their 17-year-old son at their home. The wife, who was not at the residence in the 1900 block of Continental Avenue at the time she placed the call, also informed officers there were firearms in the home.

As officers were on their way there, a second call came in from the 17-year-old, whose name is being withheld because of his age. He reported his dad was waving a handgun at him and had just fired off a round in their garage.

Police cordoned off the area, but on the way to the home they learned Greene had driven off in his red Toyota Tacoma pickup. The 17-year-old and his brother, Kenneth Greene, then walked up to the officers a short distance from their residence. The older son had a laceration to his forehead that he blamed on his father having hit him with a large ceramic floor tile.

For their safety, the pair was placed in the back of a marked police car, with headlights and overhead lights on, about a half block from their home. Just as an officer slid behind the wheel, a report came that Donald Greene was driving in the area.

Police say they tried to get the man to pull over but that he refused. A short chase led back to Continental Avenue, where Greene is alleged to have driven at high speeds head on into the patrol car holding his sons. The officer in the driver seat managed the avoid the brunt of the collision, but the force still pushed the police car 55 feet.

The Greene boys suffered minor pain, bruises and lacerations. Kenneth Greene was briefly hospitalized at UCI Medical Center in Orange and his brother was kept overnight at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana for observation.

Their father, who was pinned beneath the streering wheel, had to be rescued by firefighters. He was later listed in critical condition at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana with a fractured pelvis, possible fractures to his rib cage and injuries to internal organs.

No police officers were injured.

From follow-up investigation, police were told Greene hit his 17-year-old without other provocation, stated that he may want to harm himself and waved a .41 caliber handgun at both sons before firing the gun in his garage. (A firearm matching that description was found inside the home.) It was also reported he had said he intended to take his own life when he rammed his truck into the police vehicle. Police believe he had been drinking.

Greene was placed under arrest on suspicion of attempted homicide on his two sons, attempted homicide on a police officer, and assault with a deadly weapon. His bail could be set as high as $1 million.

I actually know Donnie. He would never had rammed that police car, if he knew his sons where in the car. I just hope he gets the help he needs. Donnie is actually a really nice guy. Shows why drinking is not an answer to problems, it creates them

Hey,

He wasn't *actually* trying to kill the kids. Inspired by Amy Chua, he's working on the next blockbuster parenting book: "Battle Hymn of the Trailer Dad: how angry drunk white guys make better parents."
