Chad Martin Jurjaks Accused of Hate Crime for Yelling, 'Fucking Mexicans!' and Punching 2 Guys
Chad Martin Jurjaks, 30, of Costa Mesa, now faces up to seven years and four months in a state prison cell for that show of intolerance.
After the attack on the family, they called 911. Police responded and arrested Jurjaks a short distance from the store. This wasn't his first run-in with the law, based on the charges filed by the Orange County district attorney's office (OCDA).
Jurjaks faces two felony counts of hate-crime battery causing injury, with a sentencing enhancement for a prior strike conviction for criminal threats in 2006. At his bail hearing scheduled this morning in Santa Ana, the OCDA said it would request bail be set at $100,000.
"Hate-crime laws," prosecutors point out, "prohibit the use or threat of force by any individual in order to intimidate, interfere with, oppress or threaten any other person from exercising any right secured by the U.S. Constitution or state or federal laws based on 'race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, sexual orientation, gender or disability.'"
