Census 2010: Orange County African-American Community Increases in Size, Still Embarrassingly Low

• I'm black and I can't wait to move to the O.C. I really don't care about what race I'm around, I get along well with all.

• I bet your kids are smart. I totally mean that by the way, not as a smart ass comment. It's just really sad though, because even if they've got the brains, it doesn't make up for the fact that their father is a bigot.

• As someone who moved to Orange County four years ago from a very different place, I have to tell you: It's freakin' scary here. The gated communities for one. THAT'S creepy. I totally understand why, I mean, if I had kids I would want to make sure they stay safe too, but I have never in my life lived in a gated community, and the sight of so many here makes me feel uncomfortable. Not saying you do it intentionally, but it's my natural reaction because I'm not used to it. It's like, who are they trying to keep out though? The vandals? Because chances are they are coming from inside your neighborhood. And then there's the shopping centers. I have never seen so many agitated, bitchy white people in my life. Not saying they are all bitchy! But there are a lot of people who just get genuinely angry over really small things. For instance, my friend accidentally took someone's spot, not seeing that they were waiting for it, and when they got out, two white men were yelling at her and calling her a bitch! I mean, maybe it is where I come from, but to me that is so inappropriate. Or the suburban kids that hang out at these shopping centers after school and have the biggest attitudes ever! What I say next is not fair, and I will admit that but I gotta say it. Every single time I see these kids, and I see how they are acting, I go, "Where the hell are your parents, and why have they not taught you manners?!?" Or going to a bar that has a reggae night and the place is filled with 40+ years old white people who are so tanned with spots that they are starting to look like cheetahs and are bumping and grinding on the dance floor. I mean, I understand needing to get your groove on, but I just gotta express that this is what I frequently run into when I try to explore the nightlife of Orange County. Hence, I stopped going out. It's just weird, that's all I can really tell you. Granted, I don't know all of Orange County, only southern Orange County, but if you really want to know why African-Americans aren't moving here, it can probably be summed up like this: People that live in Orange County are weird as shit and scary as fuck.

• I live in Orange County because that's where I chose to live. If more black people choose to live in Orange County, then the demographic percentages will increase. In the meantime, how is it the fault of white people who live here that black people haven't chosen to live here? I mean, you choose where you want to work, where you want to live, and if you have the money to buy or rent that location, then do it! Equal housing and employment laws aren't suspended in Orange County, so if some people want to live here and others don't, why does that make our demographic "abysmal"? Variety is great, but I'm not forcing black people to move to Costa Mesa so GA can feel better about the spread.

• You know what, Arellano is full of frijoles. Orange County is put together with LA as far as the Census is concerned -- its called the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana statistical area. • Would have been nice had Arellano also mentioned the well know effect that immigration (illegal and legal) from Mexico is having on communities that have traditionally been dominated by African-Americans. Why isn't it 'sad' that, say, Compton is now mostly 'Latino' and that blacks will eventually lose their political power there? Or, if Gustavo knew any economics, he might realize that some of the 'jobs Americans won't do' in OC would be done by poorer blacks (and poor whites etc) were it not for his co-ethnics taking those jobs. Heck, I can remember about twenty years ago when a young black guy and a white teen actually did gardening in my folks' neighborhood. (My dad, being a good American, mowed his own lawn-- as I do today).
