Place Your Bets: Which Bar Is No. 1 in Drunk-Driving Arrests in the No. 1 City for Drunk-Driving Collisions?

As we recently reported, Huntington Beach takes the pathetic No. 1 spot in 2009 California DUI collisions among cities of its size.

In an effort to tackle the issue, the Huntington Beach Police Department is pointing its finger at individual bars. Officers have been asking those arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence where they were drinking before they got in the car, and the department has added up the numbers. A state investigation is under way on the top offender, the Huntington Beach Independent reports.

See which watering holes place in the Top 3 after the jump. Any bets?

Baja Sharkeez in downtown Huntington Beach came in first, with 72 DUI arrests during a 22-month period.

Hurricanes Bar & Grill was second, with 52 drunk drivers, and Killarney Pub & Grill was third, with 33 during the same period.

The Department of Alcohol Beverage Control is investigating Sharkeez after Police Chief Ken Small sent a letter to the state department's district administrator, the Independent reports.

"I believe the ownership and management of the establishment represent, at best, an indifferent attitude toward public safety," Small wrote.

But Sharkeez owner Ron Newman believes the bar is being targeted simply due to its popularity. He told the Independent, "What happens on the highway we cannot control. We don't serve anybody that's overly intoxicated. I can't tell if you had two or three drinks. If you're not obviously intoxicated, we can't tell. If someone is obviously intoxicated, we cut them off."

Someone needs to send Johnny's Saloon a fucking HB citizenship award. What other HB bar will give you a cab voucher to get home if you're too blasted to drive? Sharkeez may "cut you off" but Johnny's will take care of you. No I don't work for Johnny's, just always impressed with their level of responsibility.

all the more reason to have a checkpoint and stop traffic so our local officers can sieze cars from young kids with 'malfunctioning emissions equipment' or 'insurance or registration expired yesterday' or 'this insurance paper has your dad's name, not yours,so we're gonna have to impound your car' so they can take your property and acution it off, or hold it for ransom to raise money and make police work PROFITABLE! Drunk drivers take second priority,or lower, after fund raising. See OC Register Watchdog column to check it out. Yes City of Buena Park, this means you, too! Having senior citizens patrol the mall for registration that expired yesterday and calling the cops who come right away to take the car away! Who is liable if one of your senior citizen volunteers gets hurt?

That high number has more to do with some cop's favorite fishing spot than anything else. The justification to piss away more taxes on this doesn't hold up. How about a bit of serious education & *prime time* public service announcements to educate people who drink - when they are sober - about the consequences & their options? Oh thats right, DUIs fill the coffer and FCC mandated service ad slots must be worth a buttload to a few civil cronies. Forget I mentioned it.

Not enough is being written here about how douchebaggy the name "Sharkeez" is.

I can't believe the blame is placed on the establishment and not the patron ! It's ridiculous. If a drinker doesn't know their limit and can't distinguish when they're too drunk to drive there's a bigger problem that needs to be addressed...blatant stupidity ! You can send a drunk to rehab, but stupid is forever...let the consumer start taking responsibility for their actions. Bartenders and bar owners are there to sell liquor. It is not their responsibility to monitor every person who bellies up and administer a breathalyzer...The HB downtown area has more bars per square foot than any other place I've ever lived. Whose responsible for that?

Nailed it!

Would have had the tri-fecta but I had Sharkeez / Hurricanes / Fred's.....DAMN!

Really?
Really?

I thought for sure it would be Perqs. But then again that place is such a rummy-hole that most of those old tweakers don't even have cars. They just stumble across the coast highway and sleep it off under the pier.
