UPDATE, FEB. 17, 10 A.M.: People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) announced today that it will posthumously award Steves with its Compassionate Action Award for rescuing the dog.

"Mara died as she was helping another individual in trouble," said PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk in a statement issued by PETA. "The death of such a caring soul is a loss not only to family and friends but also to the community. We hope that the example of love and courage that she set in coming to the aid of even the smallest and most vulnerable will inspire others to help animals in distress."
ORIGINAL POST, FEB. 14, 1:22 P.M.: Mara Steves was jogging down the street on Sunday afternoon when she noticed a dog weaving through oncoming traffic near the intersection of Molton Parkway and Nueva Vista Road in Laguna Niguel.

Moments after Steves, 48, had assisted the dog onto the sidewalk, a motorist ran a red light, collided with another vehicle, and ran up onto the sidewalk, directly into Steves, sending her body into a nearby wall. By Sunday night, the wall was home to a candlelight vigil dedicated to Steves, who died from her injuries.Three motorists were in the hospital yesterday evening being treated for their injuries. The worst was sustained by a 56-year-old woman, who was the passenger in a vehicle, with a broken collarbone. The driver of the vehicle that struck Steves has yet to be released.

Steves was a wife, mother of two and former PTA president at a nearby elementary school.

According to reports, the dog Steves saved ran away following the accident.

Details of the accident and a witness' description are in the KTLA report below.

yet another stupid story like: dog falls in lake - man drowns after trying to rescue it - dog swims to shore and survives. what's the matter with people? human lives are worth more than animals. as much as i love my girlfriend's dog, i would not put my life (or allow her to put her's) at risk if he got into a life threatening situation.

Why would we need more people like her? I'm sorry for your lost but We don't want people putting their life at risk for a dog, come on. This is a human life that has been lost. If you can help in a safe way do it and if not I guess the dog is own it's own. Just a thought

This is by FAR the greatest sacrifice/HUMANE active of kindness & benevolence that any creature can do for another.. And in my opinion is the news & type(s) of news that ought to be on the headlines of EVERY "'News' Publication!"

I am religious in no way whatsoever & even if I was I wouldn't state so, but I DO believe that this woman has gone to a (BETTER) place!

BTW (on a side note): PROPS & GRATITUDE for your publication & (especially) reponse to the "letter" via ocweekly.com from "Ghangis" (in reply to "Dying Inside"/Brooke Files).. I have UNFORTUNATELY seen/witnessed the brutality inside OCJ (it's been awhile thank goodness!) & have been following the stories - specifically the most current: "WHO'LL STOP THE PAIN?!" & I didn't even realize that I had been reading about Brooke's brother - I have known Brooke for like 17 years.. she is a WONDERFUL, KIND HEARTED & CARING PERSON.. & it is pure tragedy as to what (so often) happened/happens (AKA: the way the 'system' runs - from big pharmeceuticals TO imprisonment/TORTURE of those who suffer from pain, addiction, etc... all equaling: CA$H FOR THE STATE/GOV'T.

Brooke is very mindful & loving of animals, btw.. so if she reads this I hope it brings a smile!-B

So sad to hear of such a bright and courageous life being cut short. Condolences to her family and friends.

Two random events: woman saves a dog and woman is run down by a car, joined together by another ramdom link: PETA. Yeah, it sure makes a lot of sense...

What's wrong with the world? Why do kind hearted people had to leave this world the way she did.I was deeply saddened by the news and about the way she died. To her family and friends my sincere condolences on the loss. <3

I absolutely hate this story. It is beyond depressing. It transcends tragic.

Everything you read about this woman is what a great human being she was and how kind-hearted she lived her life.

Life sucks.
