[UPDATED: It's True!] The Orange County Performing Arts Center's Big Reveal: Not Really That Big

UPDATE, JAN. 13, 2011, 12:13 P.M.: The Orange County Performing Arts Center has indeed been renamed as the Segerstrom Center for the Arts, as announced during a celebration yesterday evening. According to the OC Metro, the event was attended by approximately 1,500 guests, which included former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

ORIGINAL ITEM, JAN. 7, 2011, 1:12 P.M.: When the Orange County Performing Arts Center sent out a massive e-mail to members of the press in the county about a "Very Special Center Announcement and Celebration," I'll admit, my imagination went wild.

After all, we have a lot to thank OCPAC for: They've played host to an innumerable amount of concerts, Broadway shows and, in general, events this county would probably never see if it weren't for the center's continued efforts to bring them here.

My first thought? "Paul McCartney is coming to town!"

And then I received a tip from a source close to someone involved with the big announcement: Anticlimactic isn't even appropriate enough of a word.

Here it is: The Orange County Performing Arts Center is changing its name to Segerstrom Center of for the Arts.

This is a terrible announcement in a number of ways:
  • The Orange County Performing Arts Center just seems way more fitting.
  • We lose the OCPAC acronym and the recognition that comes with it.
  • A high school and a street aren't enough?
  • No Paul McCartney.

Though, as our tipster points out, when your boss renames an entire performing arts center after himself, you're kind of obligated to get excited.

The Segerstrom family, as you may know, is another one of those mega-rich Orange County families that owns just about everything you can stand on in this county, including South Coast Plaza.

One more thought: Is Segerstrom Hall still going to be called Segerstrom Hall?

At the risk of correcting Ms. Chang, a writer I greatly admire, and with no definitive source other than some familiarity with the goings-on at OCPAC, my bet is that the overall arts campus will now officially be called the Segerstrom Center for the Arts.

This includes SCR, the Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, and the Orange County Performing Arts Center (OCPAC)—the main stage of which will remain Segerstrom Hall—as well as the eventual move of Orange County Museum of Art to the area (land for which has already donated by... yes, the Segerstrom family).

The main, original building we know as the Orange County Performing Arts Center will still be called that, most likely. Of course I could be wrong.

There are a lot of convoluted issues deep within past donor agreements: the acres of land given by the Segerstroms for all the art edifices within the area, as well as major construction and support funding from the Segerstroms.

There's been a bit of schism between the Segerstroms and OCPAC in recent years. The Segerstroms have been calling the entire arts campus the Segerstrom Center for the Arts for some time. The OCPAC folks have been pointed in not doing so.

Lawyers were involved. It was complicated. It needed to be fixed.

My educated guess would be that the schism has been resolved, by either the carrot of further Segerstrom bequests or the stick of possible reduced support OCPAC and its president, Terry Dwyer, by key members of the Segerstrom family.

Either way, and even if I'm wrong in the particulars, resolution is good for the arts in Orange County.

They donated the land for the buildings but not the parking structures. As a result, they can make over $3,000 a performance in building parking structures at would otherwise be empty at that time of night.

They can change the name for all i care, but im still calling it ocpac. and so are my friends.

Hey Vickie -- What would you prefer, "Comrade Hall" or "The People's Performing Art Center" or maybe, "El Centro de Illegals"?

They should call it The Los Angeles Segerstrom Center of the Arts of Orange County.

As long as they keep making that Sweet Tea Vodka and Gin I don't care what they call it. It will be kinda hard to explain where the venue is since the word "Orange County" is not included.

Vickie Chang, get over it. The Segerstrom family is responsible for all the grown in the South coast area. They donated the land and most of the Money to build the Performing Arts Center so they Deserve to have it named after them. Get over yourself !

For all Henry and his family have done for Costa Mesa and Orange County (tax revenue alone), not wanting media to use the "m" word for South Coast Plaza seems like a pretty minor thing to ask.

If you were REALLY old school, you'd call the Pond the Anaheim Arena. My uncle still has a T-shirt bearing that logo...

Vickie's source is right. The whole thing is changing to Segerstrom name. No more OCPAC.

Ramchip: Your name is apropos of the logic in your comment. This is just more proof of how bush-league Orange County remains...

Yes, they donated it but that doesn't mean their name has to be all over it unless the only reason they donate things is to get their name out there. They donated it to OC so I don't see why the name has to be changed.

That should be "All the Growth"

Well, I think they deserve the right to name it whatever they please. Maybe if you don't like the name, you could Purchase it and name it what you please !!
