UPDATE, JAN. 25, 1:17 P.M.: "America's Sheriff" turned himself in at the Federal Correctional Institution Englewood in Littleton, Colorado, today to start serving his 5-and-a-half-year sentence, according to Victoria Joseph, a Federal Bureau of Prisons spokeswoman.

"I believe justice has been done," U.S. District Judge Andrew J. Guilford said during a brief hearing on Mike Carona's surrender, which was held at the Reagan federal courthouse in Santa Ana.

Justice may not be done with the 55-year-old, however.

Despite Carona having lost one appeal aimed at keeping him out of prison, his attorneys have filed a petition seeking a rehearing or a hearing of the full panel of judges.

"He's going to continue to pursue his appellate rights," Brian Sun, Carona's attorney, said outside the Santa Ana courtroom today, according to an Associated Press report.

UPDATE, JAN. 25, 8:22 A.M.: At this hour, Mike Carona has yet to turn himself in to federal authorities for prison lockup in Colorado ahead of a hearing he was scheduled to attend today in Santa Ana. If OC's disgraced ex-sheriff were to show up at 10 a.m. here, he would then be processed and briefly held in the Orange County Jail, which he used to run. That would no doubt be less comfortable than the minimum-security federal prison his attorney says Carona is headed to. So, as we wait to see how this plays out, let's take a look at our former top cop's new digs.

Here is what we know about the Federal Correctional Institution Englewood in the foothills of Littleton, Colorado:

  • It is a satellite facility to a larger, low-security federal prison.
  • It opened in 1940.
  • Population as of April 13, 2006: 884.
  • Prisoner perks include foosball, billiards and Ping-Pong.

As the Forbes piece noted, "The days of 'Club Fed'--think golf courses and lobster bakes--are long gone. But minimum-security facilities, known as federal prison camps, are the best-suited for disgraced CEOs and other white-collar criminals."

Besides the perks detailed above, Carona will enjoy a relatively low staff-to-inmate ratio, dormitory-style accommodations and little to no fencing.

In fact, the ex-sheriff and Lil' Ex-Sheriff can walk away any time they like.

Presumably, they'd be in even more hot water were they recaptured.

ORIGINAL POST, JAN. 21, 4:34 P.M.: Well, Mike Carona was once known as "America's Sheriff," so it's fitting that Orange County's disgraced ex-sheriff will turn himself over for lockup in a federal prison in the middle of the country.

Brian Sun, Carona's attorney, states in a letter filed in court Friday by prosecutors that Carona plans to surrender at the Federal Correctional Institution Englewood in Littleton, Colorado, before a scheduled hearing Tuesday in Santa Ana.

Carona was indicted on federal charges of conspiracy and mail fraud in a sweeping public corruption case, but was acquitted in January 2009 of all but one charge: witness tampering.

He was sentenced the following April to five and a half years in prison.

A federal appeals court this month upheld Carona's conviction.

Hey, maybe Carona will become a South Park character. Mr. Hankey, meet the Li'l Sheriff!

i see all the time you can get mortgage refinance rates for around but when it matters of how much does the government want to keep as debt, a mortgage just can't give out thousands of dollars to walking away, even if he or she has the money to keep paying. Orange County Jail help me a lot about this.

This is grotesque. There is no punishment if this scum gets to keepo his five thousand dollar per week pension.

He deserves a blindfold and a cigarette, a place against a brick wall and a few ounces of hot lead, nothing more.

It'd be nice if we billed his family for the bullets too.

He will probably have to do most of the time.

WikiThe Federal Correctional Institution Englewood in Littleton, Colorado, is a low security facility for male offenders. The prison also has an administrative detention center and an adjacent satellite prison camp for minimum-security male offenders, which offers pool, Ping-Pong or even foosball to the inmates.

Former CEO of Enron, Jeffrey Skilling, is currently serving his sentence there.

Mike Corona is going on a vacation why do the rich and connected get to go to the cozy club in the Rocky Mountains?everyone should start a letter writing campaign to get this place and places like it shut down make these inhuman assholes serve there sentence in a real prison were Buba an all his friends can take turn butt fucking these pricks.

What's the big deal? They will put him in a nice secluded area away from the inmates, in protective custody...he'll probably be able to get "nice" visits, too. There's no point to this stupidity. If anything, make sure he doesn't ever receive his pension, etc...!!!

I suppose Colorado makes sense. He'd have the life expectancy of a common housefly in a level 3 or 4 California prison? Maybe not quite that bad but he would be in serious danger if mixed in with population. I support him doing his time in a safe place, like I support any person convicted of a crime being safe while doing their time (even if it's a life sentence), though I don't think it should be cushy at all. He should be pressing license plates 12 hours a day or sitting in the hole imo.

I think this is a bunch of bull crap. We forgive not hate.

Why is it that a combat vet can lose all his benefits if convicted of a crime, yet some like Corona, gets convicted and keeps his. Where's the true justice?

Corona should get in touch with that FAT PIG phony Howard Kieffer, runs a business helping Federal inmates. He lived in FLoral Park and was a politico type for a while. He could help get Mike placed.

Oh that's right Kieffer is in Federal Prison too! For faking his Law Degree!

Does he have to do all 5.5 years or can he get released early? The real crime is the hundreds of thousands of pension dollars he'll collect when he gets out. How is it that a public official can be convicted of a federal offense and keep their pension? Is this a WTF moment or what?

Really? Have you forgotten that he was convicted of one thing - witness tampering? You should be more careful what you wish for as one day it may be you on the receiving end of a judge's gavel.

There is a huge difference between the scum that are in prisons - murderers, rapists, drug traffickers, etc., and people who commit white collar crimes. While I am not at all happy Corona got off on the other charges, he was only convicted of witness tampering.

If you're going to do a letter campaign I would suggest instead one to your state representatives and senators, governor, etc., to stop the spending on illegal aliens and 100% pensions for state and county workers. A report just came out that over $1 BILLION is spent each year on illegal aliens and their children - THAT is a crime.

At Englewood there is no solitary confinement if you screw up there all they do is move you to a different prison, besides that all the assholes in that place are like him they all have friends in the justice and political arenas. this fucking place is pretty much like a country club the inmates for the most part can walk right on out of the place because the low security part were Corona will most likely be housed there is no fence and hardly any guards. This was one of the prison MSNBC profiled on the show Lockup.

As one of Carona's victims, and a combat vet, that is a good question. The military protects America, including the police, even corrupt police. The police carry guns and badges and sometimes misuse their power. In Carona's case this included him and his goons nearly beating me to death in a faked up arrest and fake charges. When corrupt military leaders are caught they are dealt with by the military justice system. Carona got by with murder and is lucky to get by with the relatively light sentence he received. He is basically a terrorist and social parasite, with a mafiaso, corrupt cop twist thrown in. I am still trying to recover from identity theft he committed against me that he started in 1999.

Hey, hey, hey, people: Listen to your county Board of Stupes. It is not the fat-cats like Carona and their out-of-whack pensions that are the problem. It is the rank-and-file county workers who are scraping to get by.

Collect when he gets out? He's already getting his $200,000 plus pension now. In the 5 years that he's in prison, he'll have collected over a million dollars. Of course it's his wife who'll be getting it, because he can't have it in prison. Oh, and that's the wife that he cheated on.

From the OCR today:

By federal law, Carona will have to serve at least 85 percent of his prison sentence, meaning he will likely not be eligible for release until late 2015.

Athirson
Athirson

There is no parole in the Federal prison system. He will serve at least 90% of his sentence. That said, he is going to Club Fed, with a salad bar and executive golf course.

The whole California pension debacle is a travesty.

He was convicted of only one thing because that is what he could not weasel out of or the judge could not find a reason to dismiss. That does not mean that he is not guilty of the other three, just that the justice system is inept, corrupt or most likely both. They "take care of their own".

This criminal should spend his time in a real prison and have not only his pension taken away from him but he should pay restitution (financially and otherwise) to all he has wronged.

Then again, pigs will be flying tomorrow...........

What about his pension? His selling of a sheriffs badge?Using county funds for hotel rooms so he could bang his skank?

These government crooks have it better than the average person. They have it better when they are convicted of a crime. They should be punished ten times harder for corruption and theft under color of authority. He gets pension for life, right? 5k a week? Then it would sound fiscal policy for the state to assure he has a very short life.Rob a bank? 25 years to life. Be Mike Corona, get 20k per month for life. This isn't justice, it's a joke. And yes, if I am elected to public office and get caught with a freezer stuffed with cash bribe money or other corruption, then yes, shoot me. Of course, no meaningful change will arise from my post. But maybe somewhere an elected official or LE type is reading this, and they will sense in me the growing rage of the average dude.Ship our jobs out, destroy our home values, abandon the border and take all we can from The People. That's what the so called authorities do. That's the message. When the people lose faith in the currency and the elected officials to do the right thing there will be blood in the streets. You cannot say you have not been warned. Look today in Eqypt, Albania, Saudi Arabia and Tunisia. Those people have had enough and similar scenes will play out here if this governmental madness continues.

a crime is a crime. The real crime is that is collecting 20k a month while in the pen.
