Jerry Brown's Budget Slashes Higher Education Funding By $1.4 Billion

The Gov.
The University of California president called it "a sad day for California."

Today, Governor Jerry Brown released his 2011-12 state budget proposal, one he described as "a tough budget for tough times," and higher eduction is feeling the blow.

Under the proposed budget, funding for the University of California and California State University systems would be axed by $500 million each. The state's 112 community colleges would lose $400 million.

Leaders of UC, CSU and California Community Colleges described the distress the new budget would bring. UC President Mark G. Yudof noted in a statement that for the first time, the state would be investing less in the university system than what students pay themselves through tuition.

"With the governor's budget, as proposed, we will be digging deep into bone," Yudof wrote. "The physics of the situation cannot be denied--as the core budget shrinks, so must the university."

In his own statement, CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed wrote that the university would not be able to admit as many students as they had been planning for the fall.  "While we understand the administration has limited options, higher education is the state's main economic driver, and we cannot improve our economy without an educated workforce," he said.

If you have a better budget, then let's hear it.

I don't mind Raising tuition on higher education as long as it is in line with the rest of the country. I do mind that the state gives people with my tax dollars better health benefits than I have and I am working. I do mind the tax extension and will vote against it as everyone should do. I say cut environmental agencies, cut welfare become more business friendly. If california is so great raise property tax or cut the hell out of stupidity!

eliminate the basket weaving therapuetic classes that do nothing to prepare students for a job so they can be a productive member of society rather than a continuing burden on the rest of us but leave them in debt and under/unemployable

Meaning Democrats will propose such budgets to avoid complete downward spiral created by the Governator and Republicans. Stop following Sarah Palin.

As expected, Republicans intend to starve states of money in order to create potential political ammunition to alter state worker union laws.

The writing was on the wall when Brown stated in his campaign, that he will not raise taxes without voter approval. I suspect, in time he will ask voters to increase taxes for meg and her buddies, (Millionaires/Billionaires). But this first year, I think most everyone is going to be pissed!

The problems with the anti teacher rhetoric is people have been brainwashed by anti-union forces into believing that teachers are overpaid and all make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year pensions. That is NOT the case, those fat pensions are paid to ADMINISTRATORS teachers do not choose that profession for the money, they do NOT make that much... I believe that most teachers/professors do it to teach! The same goes for Government Employees, (with the exception of Police Dep Sheriffs and fire fighters) they do not make that much, compared to their administrators. Just look at the top OC Pensions of $20,000 a MONTH+ at this link: http://voiceofoc.org/blogs/art... it lists them by Name and Department and Amount.

Cory, The FEDS bailed out the people you mentioned, NOT the State of California. The Federal Government has no interest in helping states with their tax problems.

When about 20% of the state is unemployed and only a portion of the unemployed collect unemployment compensation state as well as federal tax revenues decline substantially. perhaps it IS a good idea to eliminate Federal as well as State PERSONAL Income Taxes, and instead go to Federal and State Sales Tax on EVERYTHING, No Exclusions No Deductions No Adjustments No annual Returns to be filed... oops, no more H&R Block No more loans against returns... never mind... lol

So far, Brown looks like Meg Whitman in his governorship. How about the rich bastards in this state finally paying their fair share instead of it being everyone else? Will Brown be recalled like Gray Davis for poor decisions like this?

Jerry also want to raise state income, sale tax and car registration which did not mention in the article

Cut pay of Professors and Assistant Professors and their respective retirement donations. You have been handing it out like it is yours to give and quite freely until now, so it is time to cut anchor and reel in what you can. Look around, there are lots of people who will take over the positions if those currently holding them quit. If you do not want to cut pay, we can easily shut the cash sucking leaches down until sensibility sets in. Time to regain common sense and charge out of staters and out of country illegals for the full ride at the maximum out of state rate.

I don't understand the budget cuts. The Fed gave Goldman Sachs $600B, AIG $1.7 Trillion and Citi $1.8 trillion. Why are we CA residents suffering over a measly $24 billion?

Well, DUBv, since Gray Davis and his love for fat public employee pensions got us into this fucking mess, i guess your stupid theory has no relevance. Take Keith Olbermanns cock out of your mouth and read a fucking book!

You are one seriously mixed up fellow. This isn't rocket science .Our state simply has too many peoplemaking their living off of others labor. we have too many gov jobs and too many union jobs, which have used polical might to secure wages higher than the free market would provide. We have finally hit the wall. Those of us in the provate sector will not keep providing more and more while we ake do with less and less. For many, the gravy train is over.

Recall him for another like him? We still elect these people year after year. I remember his first go round. Either the unions control elections or our citizens are ignorant..

Assistant Professors do not receive retirement donations, when school faculty or staff have to go on leave they request "timed owed" from their colleagues. Professors are already horribly underpaid for the amount of schooling, training, mentoring, and research they have earned this on top of teaching, meetings, and advising. Check your facts and stop repeating Idiotic Tea Party Populist dogma. The fact is that California is bottom 10 in spending per student compared to the rest of the United States. What leeches* are you speaking? Most undocumented students pay out of pocket with 3 or 4 jobs and do not qualify for any type of loans, work-study, or grants. If they were charged the full amount they would most likely not be able to afford higher education which would result in less real money for the UC, CSU, and CCC systems across California- many students take out loans that only perpetuate debt. Learn how to spell and read facts before you go off on your Trabuco Canyon rhetoric

I always read this to see how bad you poor people live. The US congress works for rich basters like me. My company alone made 500million in 2010 and you can't even pay for your school. What is funny I never went to school. Word of advise if your a leader school is just a waste of time and space. What is the point of an education if its pointless theres no jobs. If you like to be protected and follow daddy around then go to school. Good luck to all of you people.

Unions control elections? Please explain. Meg Whitman spent well over 140 million dollars. Obviously people remember they can still vote here in California. Another like the Governator? Please. Call yourself ignorant. Not me.
