Orange County residents could not help but be haunted by Denise Huber's disappearance in 1991. For years afterward, a painted portrait of the pretty 23-year-old was splashed on a wall facing the connector between the 405 freeway and Route 73--near where her car had broken down before being found abandoned.

The break in the case came in 1994, after a grisly discovery inside a Ryder truck parked in Prescott, Arizona.

Those who remember the Huber case, have forgotten about it or never knew about it will get to re-live it tonight on television.

Her disappearance and discovery will be featured on the premiere episode of the Investigation Discovery channel's Stolen Voices, Buried Secrets, which is set to roll at 7 p.m. (but check local listings). The program "shares the unique perspective of the victim through fictionalized, first-person narration based on the facts of each case," states an Investigation Discovery release.

"While the all-seeing narrator, 'Denise,' knows who was responsible for her murder, the series creatively allows viewers to piece together who is the culprit based on clues from investigators, family and friends as each story unfolds."

Here's the channel's description of the episode titled "Cold As Ice":

On a warm California evening in the summer of 1991, 23-year-old grad student and music lover Denise Huber attended a concert.  When she failed to return home and her car was found abandoned on the freeway, Denise's parents begun to fear the worst.  Despite a widespread search, Denise remained a missing person for three long years, but her parents refused to give up hope that one day she would return home.  Then, in 1994, an Arizona couple reported a mysterious moving van parked in a stranger's yard.  When the Arizona police investigated the van, what they discovered was both chilling and heartbreaking.

Huber, a friend and a friend of that friend had been to a Morrissey concert at the Great Western Forum in Inglewood the night of June 2, 1991. Afterward, they had a bite at El Paso Cantina in Long Beach. After dropping her friend off at his Huntington Beach home around 2 a.m. June 3, Huber headed home for Newport Beach. Her blue 1984 Honda Accord was found with a flat tire on the connector south of Bear Street in Costa Mesa.

In 1994, Prescott paint shop owner Elaine Court arranged to buy paint from John Famalaro. Pulling up to Famalaro's home, Court found it odd that a Ryder truck was parked in the driveway, so odd that she called the local police. Officers arrived, looked inside the back of the truck and found a freezer. Huber's body was inside.

Detectives later found guns and handcuffs strewn about Famalaro's home. A box marked "X-Mas decorations" contained a bloody hammer and nail puller. A Los Angeles County Sheriff's Patrol shirt was found inside a closet.

Prosecutors ultimately convinced a jury that Famalaro posed as a cop to gain Huber's trust after her car broke down in those early morning hours. He's now rotting on Death Row.

I remember this case because I drove by that sign with her beautiful picture on it. I now have three girls of my own. I yelled at one last night for driving from huntington to dana point to drop someone off and took no one else along with her at 2:30am after Knotts Scary Farm. They don't get it, don't understand how a parent can be upset over that. It is because of terrible animals like the above.

This has impacted my life. I will never forget Denise Huber even though I never knew her. I cry for her and her family to this day.

I knew Denise from working with her -- it still haunts me knowing what a sweet girl in the wrong place at the wrong time. An innocent life - she never did anything wrong.

This case is so incredinly sad.  How do her parents and loved ones cope with this?  It is only by the Grace of God they do.  Thank God for an observant and sensitive person who had enough curiosity to put an end to Denise's family misery of not knowing and most likely saved the lives of countless others. God only knows how many other victims this perp had prior to Denise?

Worse of all, is that death role is protective custody from the general population. If he is in prison, he should live in fear of other dirtbags like himself on a daily basis. Not watching TV in a private cell waiting for meals.

This case has been widely covered by different knowledge channels and shows (New Detectives, Cold Case Files, Arrest and Trial, and Forensic Files all ALSO covered it, and I wouldn't be surprised if ID's Disappeared covers the case next season [or the next, or the next...]. In any case, more than ONE driver's license was found in Famalaro's possession and I, for one, would like to know if they've tied him to concretely to any more missing women. I doubt highly I'm alone when I say I don't believe Ms. Huber was this prick's first OR only victim.

Let's see you all rage over an innocent black man or a Muslim being killed similarly. Oh yeah, I forgot, being pretty makes your life more precious than others.

This is a horrific and sad story, but expressing your rage does not make you seem compassionate, but rather a violent deranged animal no better than Famalaro. Control yourselves.

Perhaps it's best to ask him why he did it. There was something wrong with him. It could be a problem that many others may have, and if not addressed, it can take more lives. Human brains are just like computers, they can be defective.

Boyo: The goal of the government is to fix the issue, in this case, punishing and preventing crimes. The goal of the private sector is to make money. In the private sector, money talks. Charlatans with money would get away with doing no time, and the prisons would go out of their way to make sure the crimes are repeated so they can make more money. No thanks, I'd rather have everyone punished equally and turned into responsible citizens who regret their past behavior. Not the other way around.

I am thankful that this man was found and was held accountable for this terrible crime and that Denise was returned to her family so that they can begin healing. There would never be a punishment adequate enough for the crime that he committed. As a parent myself, I can't begin to imagine the horror and pain that Mr. and Mrs. Huber have had to endure and I want to extend my most heartfelt feelings of sympathy for you. Your daughter is a beautiful girl, and her spirit showed in the pictures that were shown on the show last night. I will keep you both in my prayers and pray that your healing will continue and that when you think of your daughter you will remember all of thoe beautiful moments with her, not the ugliness that this man caused. Blessings to you.

I think in stead of killing their way which will be never. Let us kill him almost how he killed her. This sad and such a pretty young lady she was. Maybe if she had a cell phone it could of been different. I have the book and made me cry reading the book.

When I first heard this story I cried. What a horrible way to pass away.Thank God the woman that came to buy the paint had enough since to know that something was off.I credit her for Denise being found. It is a shame, cause now of days people don't like to get involved.I can't imagine what Denise was thinking in her last hours on earth.Rip Denise Huber.Rot in Hell you unibrow coward. This was probably the only way that he could get a woman.I hope that his ass is being beat, and raped everyday in prison,so he can feel what his victim/s went through.

Plus they will never execute him in CA! Too bad this was not Texas or VA. I usually don't support the death penalty, but he is a poster boy for it

So this Famalaro douche gets 3 hots & a cot indefinitely courtesy of the taxpayers while he lives large on death row. Just another reason to outsource the prison industry in California to private enterprise - they would put him to work instead of letting him sitting around on his ass taking up space. perhaps even provide cell accommodations the size of the freezer he put his victim in.

Did you see the posts above? The perp's entire life was gone through with a fine tooth comb, and there WERE no other victims.

Disappeared is for people that were never found.. They know what happened here but I'm impressed w your knowledge of these shows! Forensic Files is a favorite and body of evidence w dayle hindman the criminal profiler, but I def got into ID a lot in the past year! This is a very sad story but if you watch this stuff enough you become immune to it... I should have been in criminology!

The police spent three years searching through Famalaro's property. They contacted all of the women whose drivers licenses were in Famalaro's possession, and they have all been accounted for.

Yeah the problem with Falamaro is that he is evil and committed evil you bleeding heart moron. Again nobody could care less about her skin color. The fact that you used this for your idiotic political agenda is sickening. You are the one who has a problem by equating evil with pathology and then trying to make a political statement. It is people like you that make our society pathetic. You obviously live in lala land and don't have a clue. Moron, go crawl back in your cave. Jackass.

Doggreensectorkw

You are an idiot. Nobody gives a damn over the race of whether she is pretty or not. This girl was murdered is idiot. Whether she was black or yellow or Hindu or Buddhist. What a jerk you are making this political. Go crawl back in your cave.

First of all, I am black and I get very upset when I read about blacks who are missing and the response in the media which is trypically uncaring unless they are very pretty or of affluence. As for Muslims, I also react in the same way. It does not matter to me. People are people, and they their lives are precious to me. That said, I do not understand what you are complaining about exactly or the point you are tying to make? People are angry and they have the right to get angry. This piece of vermin murdered someone's child and it does not matter if she was pretty or not. We are not interested in John F. or what happened to him growing up! There are so many people in this world who have survived abuse and they have turned out to be outstanding citizens. Does the name Oprah Winfrey ring a bell? John F. made a conscious choice to do what he did. He had this woman in an ice box outside of the home of his mother. He is a loser, a liar and he should have been put to death the minute he was pronounced GUILTY! He hit this woman over the head more than 30 times!! What in the heck did she ever do to him? He is an ugly SOB who never had anyone in his life and that was the only way to get a woman to talk to his mug! Damn right we are angry. This woman had her whole life in front of her. Her parents dreams and aspirations for her are forever gone and it is because this SOB! He needs to be executed!

Good point, but it was 1991. Cell phones weren't in widespread use until the early 2000s at the earliest.

I want to cry too about this. That jerk should have been put to death in a horrid manner. How many of us have broken down on the freeway - it could have been any of us, but to think of a young lady starting out in life; this is the worst kind of crime to happen. My daughter and I watched the TV show last night and I could not sleep. I told my daughter to pull off the freeway to a gas station if she can & keep her cell charged. And I remember breaking down on the 210 fwy at 10 pm one night - and in South Central too - feeling scared; but Denise is in Heaven - still should never have happened. RIP.

Very little bothers me as much as California's so-called Death Penalty. They don't even have to kill EVERYONE on death row, but guys like Famalaro, Richard Ramirez, and Charles Ng abso-freaking-lutely should be done away with along with quite a few others we absolutely KNOW are guilty. I mean, the only reason I ever hear people question the death penalty is due to the possibility a person is innocent. If a case is circumstantial or the evidence circumspect, okay... I get it. This isn't the case with Famalaro. JMO, of course.

Heck, I remember back in 1996 I was driving from New Orleans to Tampa while on leave, on my way to MacDill AFB (as an ARMY pilot :-) ). While passing through Pensacola, I ran into a heck of a storm and there was a car stopped in the middle of the road (1 lane each way, along the shore, and because of the storm, the waves were MUCH closer to the road than usual). As an Active Duty Army officer (CW2 at the time) I've always felt it part of my duty to help Americans in a bind.

What I found was a young lady who'd run out of gas and had been waiting an HOUR for someone, ANYONE to stop and help. She said nobody would stop, and she was driving a nice Camaro. It was 10 miles EITHER WAY to the nearest wisp of civilization (though I didn't know it at the time I stopped). Even though I'd been driving for 4 hours already and had a VERY long way still to go, I drove on and found a gas station, bought a gas can, filled it with gas, then drove back and delivered it to her. She tried to give me money, but of course I wouldn't take it (Of course I SELFISHLY refused it. No, I hadn't seen "Pay it Forward" yet, but it felt [still feels] so good to be able to do something big for someone you don't know, and I was an officer, receiving flight pay, so, I mean, what would have been the point of driving 10 miles, buying gas, then driving 10 miles back in the middle of a storm so I could, what? Demand she give me the $10?). She gave me a business card and said her father owned a local construction company and if I was ever in the area and needed something, to call.

It amazed me, and STILL amazes me that this girl, gorgeous, in a Camaro, said she was waiting for over an hour and "at least 100" cars had passed without so much as slowing down, other than to pass her. I'm sure Denise was initially THANKFUL someone was stopping, before Famalaro attacked her.

Art - I assume that you meant to say "or the evidence suspect", not "circumspect". By the way, Famalaro's attorneys never contested the murder. They contested the special circumstances (kidnapping, sodomy) which made this case eligible for the death penalty. Those special circumstances were never proven, IMO. There was no evidence of either charge.

I am sorry too Elaine. We moved out of So Cal after she went missing, posting "have you seen Denise" stickers from OC to Houston. I am friends with her brother Jeff. It is still difficult to fathom.
