December Surf Events: Signings, Films, Art Shows, Sales, Grand Openings And Socializing

Getting out of the house begins tonight!
​Need somewhere to go, something to do? Is that recent paycheck burning a hole in your pocket? Have an interest in surfing, beach culture or anything that takes you away from your re-runs? Here are a few surfing/beach-type events going on in the OC area in the coming weeks, beginning with tonight.

Tonight, Dec. 2

WHO: Vans by Thalia Street Surf Shop 
WHERE: 915 South Coast Highway, Laguna Beach
WHEN: Tonight, 8 - 10 p.m.
WHY (Should You Go?): Food, music, drinks, trendy surfer types, photography by SURFER Magazine's Todd Glaser and Nolan Hall. You may even see Alex Knost and Joel Tudor. Wooooaah! And it's free.

Thursday, Dec. 2 - Saturday, Dec. 4

WHO: O'Neill, ...Lost, Rusty, Metal Mulisha
WHERE: O'Neill Headquarters - 17 Pasteur, Irvine - You can see the place off the 405, near the 133. 
WHEN: Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
WHY (Should You Go?): It's 40,000 square-feet of clothing for men, women, boys and girls at 50-70 percent off. There are also a few surfboards from Killer Dana Surf Shop. Get that holiday shopping done early and on the cheap!

Saturday, Dec. 4

WHO: South County Surfrider Foundation
WHAT: Holiday Party
WHERE: Hennessey's Tavern - 34111 La Plaza, Dana Point
WHEN: 7 - 9 p.m.
WHY (Should You Go?): The Jive Kings will be performing, there will be a ton of cool items on offer for the live raffle and silent auction and admission is free.

​WHO: Surfing Heritage Foundation and Anna Trent Moore
WHAT: Book Signing and Film Screening
WHERE: Surfing Heritage Foundation - 110 Calle Iglesia, San Clemente
WHEN: Beginning at 7 - 9 p.m.
WHY (Should You Go?): The book, Increments of Fear, and movie, Wake Unto Blue, are projects by Anna Trent Moore, daughter of big-wave surfer Buzzy Trent and caretaker of Bud Browne. The book is about Buzzy Trent, a charismatic, big-wave surfing pioneer and the film is a compilation of historic footage from the 1950s about the early days of big-wave surfing. Seating is limited (100) and costs $10, but each paid admission gets a raffle ticket for an array of prizes. Books will be available for purchase.

WHAT: Opening Reception for "Adventure Now!" an art showing.
WHERE: Shelter Surf Shop - 2148 E. 4th Street, Long Beach
WHEN: 7 - 10 p.m.
WHY (Should You Go?): Photography and "visual interest" created by some in-house folks from Shelter. There will also be the Dogzilla Food Truck will be outside, which means your four-legged friends are welcome. So too are two-legged ones, who can enjoy beer and wine, provided by 4th Street Vine. The event is free. 

Saturday, Dec. 11

​WHO: Nava Young and Surfing Heritage Foundation
WHAT: Book Signing
WHERE: Surfing Heritage Foundation - 110 Calle Iglesia, San Clemente
WHEN: 2 - 4 p.m.
WHY (Should You Go?): The talented and attractive Nava Young will be on hand to sign her new book, "Surf Food: The Ultimate Surfers Cookbook." She talked to a load of the top names in the surf industry and got the recipe for a favorite dish. Young is of the Young Family, which, if you know surf history, is surfing royalty. Her father, Nat, is a former world champion and legend, her brother, Beau, is a world champion, and her younger brother, Bryce, probably will be champion of something by some point.

​WHO: Robb Havassy and Surfing Heritage Foundation
WHAT: Solo Exhibit Reception and Book Signing
WHERE: Surfing Heritage Foundation - 110 Calle Iglesia, San Clemente
WHEN: 5 - 9 p.m.
WHY (Should You Go?): Not only will acclaimed surf artist Robb Havassy be on hand to sign copies of his new book, "Surf Story," he'll be there to shake hands, take photos, bless paint brushes and kiss babies as part of the opening and reception for his solo art exhibit.
