The Costa Mesa Police Department Traffic Unit kicked off roving DUI saturation patrols, where officers swarm stretches of road frequented by drunken drivers, on Dec. 4. Additional saturation patrols are set for Dec. 18 and 31, from 7 p.m. to 4 a.m.

Since 2007, Costa Mesa cops have made 3,796 DUI arrests and cleaned up after 224 injury crashes linked to alcohol. Seven died in those tragedies.

The Costa Mesa and Long Beach operations are funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
