[UPDATED:] Eddie Jurado Duran, OC Homicide No. 41: 14-Year-Old Found Shot to Death in Stolen Car

​More than two months after 14-year-old Eddie Jurado Duran was found dead in the driver's seat of a stolen car parked in a Santa Ana alley, two teens believed to have been occupants in the vehicle have been arrested for his murder.

Because of boys' ages--15 and 16--they have not been identified.

Santa Ana Police received a call just after 10 p.m. Se[t. 15 from Duran' s grandfather saying the Century High School student had been killed in the 1800 block of South Cedar Street, south of Edinger Avenue.

Officers arrived at the alley to discover the boy had been shot in the upper torso and left to die in 1990 Toyota Camry that had been reported stolen.

Speculation had mounted in the community and the comments section of the Weekly's original blog post on the murder that cops were responsible for the killing, with some pointing out that Duran's family had filed claims alleging police were harassing the teen.

But the Santa Ana Police Department now paints a far different picture of what it says went down. The agency claims Duran was a gang member, as were the teens in the Camry, and that they had driven into rival gang territory, where a member of that gang fired a shot into the car, killing the driver.

The shooter remains at large, but police say under state law the teens in the car can be charged with murder because their actions contributed to the high school sophomore's death. They are being held at juvenile hall.

Duran would have turned 15 on Sept. 28.

Original Post, September 16, 10:31 a.m.: Santa Ana Police have little to go on but this: 14-year-old Eddie Jurado Duran was found shot to death Wednesday night in the driver's seat of a stolen red 1990 Toyota Camry.

His grandfather had called the cops just after 10 p.m. to report the young gang member had been killed, which led offices to the grisly discovery in an alley in the 1800 block of South Cedar Street, south of Edinger Avenue.

The Santa Ana boy had been shot in the upper torso, and the Camry was in rival gang territory, according to police.

"We are trying to figure out if the shooting occurred somewhere else or did the shooting occur in the alley and no one heard it," Santa Ana Police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna tells the Orange County Register.

Police received no reports of shots fired in the area, and no weapon was found in the car reported stolen Saturday.
