Who Are the White People Helping Santa Ana Council Candidate Nam Pham Make Sure the Council isn't All-Mexican?

A curious ad appeared this week in the pages of the Viet Herald, the Little Saigon daily. SanTana City Council candidate Nam Pham, running against incumbent Sal Tinajero and possibly fake candidate Helen Martinez, asked for the support of the Herald's Vietnamese readers because "we don't have a representative [on the council], and our interests do not have a representative to fight for." Ethnic politics at its most classic, right?

But Pham also claims that among his supporters are white voters who are helping him specifically because they don't want a Mexican to win the seat.

Currently, SanTana is the largest city in the United States with an all-Latino council (member Vince Sarmiento is Bolivian), a fact that has riled the old guard of the city. According to Pham's ad (which you can read above), after a September 16 SanTana candidate's forum, "a group of white American voters contacted me. They suggested that they wanted to support me...because of many reasons and one of them is to not let the City Council of Santa Ana to be all Mexican-descent voters."

Pham went on to claim that these mysterious gabachos "guided and helped me a lot, including printing flyers and helping distribute to every home. They often give me encouragement."

Who are these mysterious white supporters? The Usual Suspects? Mike Schroeder operatives? Ghosts? Inquiring minds want to know!
