Woman Wins $1.4 Million Award for Anaheim Company's On-the-Job Spanking

​A saleswoman for an Anaheim-based, now-bankrupt alarm company is entitled to $1.4 million for having endured spanking during a company team-building exercise.

A jury also sided with Janet Orlando, who resides in Clovis in Fresno County, in her sexual harassment lawsuit against Alarm One Inc. four years ago, but she has yet to see a penny.

​The company and its insurance carriers agreed to a settlement but later declined to pay, saying the pact was contingent on finding a bank willing to finance it. They didn't.

So, jurors this time around found Alarm One, Carolina Casualty Insurance and Monitor Liability Managers Inc. breached their contract with Orlando.

She had only worked at the home-security company for five months between late 2002 and early 2003 when she quit after claiming to have been humiliated by company practices that included spanking employees with a competitor's yard sign.

A jury in April 2006 awarded her $1.7 million in damages for her claims of sexual harassment, assault, battery and infliction of emotional distress. Two months later, all parties signed an agreement to settle for $1.4 million.

Jurors deliberated for less than an hour before finding Alarm One and its insurance carriers had breached the contract. But Orlando may have to face them in court again as one insurance carrier lawyer said the company may appeal.

That's apparently fine with Orlando and her attorneys, who say the $1.4 million award has already drawn $600,000 in interest and, if the case is prolonged, damages will grow by at least $200,000 per year.

"I have the best attorneys in town," she reportedly told Lopez. "We're never going to give up."
