Surprise, Surprise: Prop 8 Backers Will Appeal

• What I see is a fight over a label, a term. That term is the word, 'Marriage.' Why the gay/lesbian community is not satisfied with the term,'legal union,' is beyond me. All of this legal wrangling over terminology makes me wonder just how much of this might be avoided if people were willing to get over the use of labels, something the gay/lesbian community is supposed to abhor in the first place. If all of the rights are the same under both terms, what is the point of fighting for a particular label? It also occurs to me that, 'difference,' is a hallmark of culture - why isn't the gay/lesbian community *celebrating* the use of legal unions, instead of fighting for a, 'norm?' I wonder...is there some deep-seated desire for perceived, 'normalcy,' within the gay/lesbian community? How sad. Individuality and uniqueness have been the calling cards of the gay and lesbian community; why the reaching for commonality? How disappointing! It is stunning that the gay/lesbian community is *actually* reaching for identification with mainstream society, instead of making every effort to maintain their unique identity as an individual culture(s). What a let-down.

• Actually, true conservatives welcome marriage equality as an expansion of personal freedom. I think perhaps you're mixing up "conservative" with "Republican". Republicans haven't been conservative for a while now. When you decide to become a real conservative, Ltpar, let us know. We'll be waiting for you with lower taxes and less government regulation, including less government intrusion into one's personal life.

• @Ltpar, And even to this day, you continue to marinade in your own ignorance, just like you never left that small Texas town. What a terrible waste! And since you can't actually go back to the 1950s, maybe blowing your brains out would be the next best alternative.

• Ltpar, the most amazing thing is that you lied on a polygraph test and still passed. Only steers and queers come from Texas and steers can't type.

• As with a multitude of issues this country faces, perception is in the eye of the beholder. Progressives, Socialists and Marxists believe that Gay Marriage and Immigration are inalienable rights guaranteed by our founding fathers. My view and those of other conservatives is that they are not. None of us was around then and can't pretend to understand the mind set of the writers of the Constitution. Part of the problem is, that "activist" Judges take it upon themselves to read the minds of those who wrote the law? While there were gays around in those early days, one can suggest with some degree of confidence that there were no big discussions between Thomas Jefferson and Ben Franklin as to whether Barney should be allowed to marry Hank. As many may recall, such conduct was considered to be abhorrent then and that standard prevailed until the 1970's when "enlightened minds" determined otherwise. I remember being asked a question once on a polygraph examination for a position of trust. The question was, "Have you ever committed any abnormal sexual act?" Being a unsophisticated boy from a small Texas town, I had no idea what an abnormal sex act was. The polygraph examiner further clarified, "abnormal sex was sexual contact "Man to man or man to animal." I passed the test and got the job. The above happened when America still had some moral values, worshipped God openly and kids were taught to respect their parents, love their country, flag, mom and apple pie in school. One day when historians look back at the downfall of the great Republic of America, there will be similarities between us and the Roman Empire. American philosopher, George Santayana pretty much had it correct when stating, "�Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.� Even with the Progressives, Socialists and Marxists in control of the country, fortunately we still have a small conservative majority on the United States Supreme Court. This is where the Gay Marriage, Immigration and a host of other leftist issues will be decided. Who knows, while Washington burns, as did Rome of old, maybe, just maybe, with the will and grace of God, America can still be saved?

• This is so typical of Gays and Lesbians, they would rather destroy something sacred that God created, the institution of the joining of a man and a woman in marriage, how is anyone straight even supporting an appeal of Prop. 8?, they want to make this into a modern day Sodom & Gomorrah, is it not true that studies have shown that typically gay or lesbian relationship are rarely long term and also more violent and dysfunctional than traditional ones? The United States was a great nation, when we had morals and values, history has always shown that when a great society forgets it's soul, that is the beginning of the end.

• Check out this site to see how a generally broad cross-section of the church (though a little CC heavy) view this issue. ...and if you are or aren't a "Christian"...go participate...it will be good for all to discuss these issues...from differing perspectives.
