Art Pedroza: Santa Ana Looking To Dump Controversial Council Member

Benavides in big trouble?
I didn't attend tonight's Santa Ana city council meeting, but influential political blogger Art Pedroza is reporting that he thinks the council majority "has had it with" member David Benavides and might be recruiting a candidate to replace him.

Benavides' apparent sin? At a previous city council meeting, he gave a city award to a group that included racist, anti-immigrant members who felt comfortable enough about their bigotry to call young Latinos in Santa Ana "f**king wetbacks" at a public July 4th celebration at the city's library.

Mayor Miguel Pulido and members Claudia Alvarez and Sal Tinajero vigorously protested Benavides' award, and in response tonight Benavides "ripped into his colleagues," according to Pedroza, who says the candidate filing deadline is Friday.

"It is very likely that by tomorrow [the council] will all be renouncing [Benavides], withdrawing their support, and casting him to the dogs," wrote Pedroza on his Orange Juice blog.

Benavides is a graduate of the private Biola University, which is "committed to biblically centered education" . . . that teaches students that they have a "responsibility to spread the Gospel through evangelism, missions and outreach."
