Hermosa Beach Discovers Nefarious OC Surfing Takeover Plot

• So some people are upset that Jack's has moved in. Too bad. We live in a free market system and only the strong survive. It's the American Way. If the so called local shops can't innovate, adapt, change, then they apparently will fall. I think the people of the South Bay deserve better than to settle for crappy shops. I did not like the vacant building along PCH. At least someone had the balls to put something there in this horrible economy.

• Was at grand opening and all I could say is they have so much nice clothing and the store looked refreshing compared to the others I use to shop at.That's right never going back to spyder or Becker. From what I hear jacks has been a family business for almost forty years. What happened to the cavaliers when lebron left, they bitched and complained!!! Better product at better prices= my money

• I guess when you lead you will always have a target on your back!

• The only thing Jack's Surfboards has done has been successful where others have failed. It's their strong work ethic,merchandise selection, and hard work which has not ownly made them "world known" but also enabled them to survive the worst recession since the depression. As you may know if you have been in the industry the past several years that the southland has been littered with shops forever closing their doors or shrinking. Yet Jack's seems to have opened two shops since 2008. So apparently they are doing something right. It is quite simple! provide your customers with a large selection of merchandise and at decent prices and the customer's will be pleased. To sit their and complain about who is local, who is "commerical", or who is loyal is only spinning your wheels and neglects the customer's needs. Provide the above and perhaps the south bay customers will patronize your shop and not drive to Huntington Beach like they used to do until last weekend. The customers have spoken with their wallets!

• All Jack's surfboards has done is made a name for themselves by cutting prices during times when most "family" owned shops need all of the business they can get. When was the last time Jack's had a local shaper? When was the last time Jack's supported local growth that wasn't for their own benefit? I work at a local surf shop in Hermosa and I can guarantee you there was no compassion or thought put into the opening of a new Jack's location, these fellows are out to make a few bucks and to invade a south bay industry that has been run and will be run by families. Except for Becker, those guys sold out. The best thing for Hermosa would be Jack's disappearing. There are more than 5 surf shops in a two mile radius. What does that mean for every store that has worked for forty years to build their reputation? It means everyone has to work a lot harder and to pinch quite a few more pennies to get the same stuff done as before. The only reputation Jack's has built is a poor one with the people of Hermosa beach.

• Also don't forget the Huntington Beach-Santa Cruz legal battle over the right to "Surf City." (HB won.) Hey, maybe a new city motto ... Surf City Huntington Beach: Hated in Towns Up and Down the Cali Coast!
