Former Angels first baseman Rod Carew hands out medals at finish line.
Rod Carew is a good Joe. During his playing days in Anaheim and long afterward, he has continued lending his support to various charities and people in need--publicly and privately. Too bad the Anaheim Hills resident went into the Hall of Fame as a twin.

Conor Stanton, 18, of Fullerton, and Vivien Wadeck, 31, of North Hollywood, were the winners in male and female winners (at 15 minutes, 48 seconds and 17:50 respectively) of the 5K, which was presented by Sports Authority and Nike.

Stanton held off two other teens, Mohammad Charara, 17, and Edgar Cobian, 16, who finished at 15:50 and 15:53.

But Wadeck had 39 seconds over her nearest competitor. Erin Griffith finished at 18:29 and Kenzie Estes was at 18:55.

Brea residents Kevin Broady, 48, and Edith Martinez, 42, won the Masters races for ages 40 and over, crossing the finish line at 16:13 and 19:53 respectively.

The 3.1 mile race started outside of Angel Stadium, wound through the surrounding area and near the end made a loop around the perimeter of the field before ending outside the site of Tuesday night's All-Star Game.

Net proceeds went to four organizations: Prostate Cancer Foundation, Stand Up To Cancer, Susan G. Komen for the Cure and City of Hope.

Besides Carew, fellow Hall of Famer Paul Molitor, former Angels Bobby Grich and Tim Salmon, Jillian Michaels of The Biggest Loser and Losing It With Jillian and actress Gabrielle Union made appearances. The host was MLB Network's Harold Reynolds.
