• People are going to hate me for saying this but it's true. Irvine is heavily populated with asians, whereas Santa Ana (who pretty much beat everyone for being 1st place in worst), has tons of hispanics. Does anyone get what I'm trying to say?

• None of these schools could do what they do if the federal and state governments got out of Education. Schools should have some autonomy to be creative as long as their results are like those of the schools listed above. You can bet that all of these schools use research-based/tried and tested methods for getting children to such high levels of learning. My grandson attends Turtle Rock and I know personally how much a parent's involvement counts - the school doesn't do it alone. It isn't that low-income parents don't want to be involved - some schools are better than others at involving and supporting parents as partners in their children's education than others. And parents of poor children most likely also attended poorly performing schools and may lack knowledge and information because of it that is needed to help their children with homework or participate in school business and other activities. High quality public education that recognizes and supports all of America's children to become the best that they can be is essential to a strong democracy...as a nation, we cannot survive socially, politically, and economically without it.

• Pretty impressive achievement by the Irvine Schools. All three of my kids are products of Irvine so I have seen them up close and personal. It is unfortunate that teachers do not receive "Merit Pay," based on a combination of things including; how well their students do. Of course, to be objective and consistent with such a pay package, School Districts would have to consider the quality of students that attend various schools. How do you balance kids from a high income community with parents who understand the critical value of being involved with their kids education, against less fortunate students from poor areas, who speak limited English and whose parents do not get involved? There are serious challenges involved in public education and they can only be solved by getting the Federal and State governments out of Education and let the local communities adapt individual creative methods of educating the future adults of America. My hat is off to all teachers, who do a thankless job and never get the credit or compensation they deserve.
