The documentary 8: The Mormon Proposition, which screened at last month's Newport Beach Film Festival after making its world premiere in January at Sundance, has been picked up for distribution, it was announced today.

Emmy-winning journalist Reed Cowan's indictment of the Mormon Church's historic involvement in the passage of Prop. 8 and secretive, decades-long campaign against gay rights is among four films acquired by Wolfe Releasing and WolfeVideo.com, "the oldest and largest exclusive distributor of gay and lesbian films."

"This is a vitally important documentary for the gay community," states Wolfe president Maria Lynn in today's announcement. "The message is urgent and we believe it will spur those who watch it to get politically involved."

Wolfe will collaborate with Red Flag Releasing to get 8: The Mormon Proposition in theaters this June. No Orange County engagements have been announced. Wolfe intends to bring the title to DVD in July.

The other titles announced by Wolfe are:

  • Elena Undone, a feature film from director Nicole Conn (Claire of the Moon) about a pastor's wife having an affair with another woman. It premieres at June's San Francisco Lesbian & Gay Film Festival before continuing on the worldwide festival circuit.

  • My Normal, Irving Schwartz's drama about a popular lesbian dominatrix from New York's Lower East Side with dreams of becoming a filmmaker. Currently on the festival circuit, the quirky feature is to be released on DVD in late 2010.

  • The Four-Faced Liar, a comedy written and co-produced by Marja Lewis Ryan, who also stars as "a hip, womanizing lesbian" whose life gets complicated when she falls for the female half of a straight-laced couple in New York. Having shown at January's Slamdance, the film plays at U.S. and Canadian festivals throughout the year.
