"Last Paradise" Director Clive Neeson's Outback Stake Out

Smile for the camera.
"Going to Extremes to Get the Shot" looks at filmmakers who hiked through mountains, hung out of helicopters and waded in shark-infested waters for their action-sports movies playing at the 2010 Newport Beach Film Festival, which kicks off Thursday and continues through April 29.

That's nothing. Clive Neeson camped out in Australia's Outback for months . . . waiting for one stupid wave.

The director of Last Paradise endured his Outback stake out to wait for, ride and film Australia's biggest wave of the year.

After shooting footage there and in other parts of Australia and New Zealand, Nesson did his camping inside Peter Jackson's Park Road Post in Wellington.

That's where he edited his fresh sequences with 45 years worth of archival footage of Australia and New Zealand's "extreme sports pioneers and innovators" in surfing, skateboarding, wakeboarding, Bungee jumping, hang gliding and other daring sports.

Neeson calls it "a 45-year quest for adrenaline and paradise."

By the way, his reward for camping out all that time in the Outback?

Three minutes of on-screen footage.

Last Paradise screens at 3:15 p.m. Friday at Edwards Island Cinemas, Screen 7, at Fashion Island. Go here for ticket info.
