Daryl Gates, ex-LAPD chief, RIP; Register readers all choked up

• He was ignorant white trash.

• Officer/Dr. Friendly- And white men can't jump.

• Why are conservatives always so bad at spelling? Oh, right, they are dumb.

• He did his job as best he could and made a LA allot safer. He wasn't always perfect but LA needed a gunslinger to stop the violence and gangs. So he did his job. I pray for his family and hope he received the lord as his savior. Cause in the end we are all Gods creations. But are you a child of Christ. God Bless Gates family and friends

• Isn't that funny, years later they did prove that Black individuals do have a neck structure that is different and is more suseptable to the named "chokehold". It was discontinued and also people aren't "hogtied" either, more breathing difficulties. Please do not say something is rascist when it is just different, Blacks are more suseptable to certain diseases also. The US military holds that Blacks can weigh more for the same height as Whites, Asians and others because of the body composition. Please check things instead of screaming rascism all the time!

• I'm sure that this is sad for his family, but that does not change that his legacy is one of bigotry, ignorance, violence, and protecting his own. I was at the receiving end of the LAPD more than once during his tenure as they were "dispersing crowds" the Gates way. Did he not at one point offer to take his swat team to Iran on a hostage rescue mission? It must be difficult to find a burial plot large enough to fit that ego. Gates is deserving of the same type of obituary that HST gave Nixon. (off topic ... Nick your book came in the mail today, I can't wait to get started on but dude that orange on the cover is painful)

• I'll always remember that the 1992 L.A. riot got out of hand because Gates was in Beverly Hills attending a political fundraiser and no high-ranking officer had the authority to call out the troops until Gates returned. Later that night, we saw footage of an L.A. SWAT racing in circles around South-Central with lights and siren blaring as if that would somehow intimidate people. Methinks Gates watched "Patton" one too many times.

• Meanwhile, Ramona Ripston, executive director of the ACLU of Southern California, who was the first civic leader to call for Gates to resign in the wake of the 1992 Los Angeles riots, offers this eulogy for Gates: � "Daryl Gates failed to react to a changing Los Angeles and a changing culture in policing. At a time of great unrest in our city, he was a lightning rod for criticism and controversy, and deservedly so, in part because of his penchant for making disturbing, overly broad statements. He inherited a police department with little respect for minority communities or for civil liberties and civil rights, and he continued that legacy throughout his career." While alive, Gates returned the love, calling Ripston, "Ramona Ripoff."
